Ministers from 23 countries in Africa and south-east Asia have appealed for international help to save the world's great apes from extinction.

Urgent action was needed to protect the great apes and provide sustainable ways of living for local communities, the UN-backed meeting in Kinshasa agreed.

Poaching and damage to forest habitats have led gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo and orangutan numbers to fall sharply.

Experts warn wild populations of great apes could disappear in a generation.

The five-day meeting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was the first involving ministers from the countries where the threatened species remain.

Officials for the United Nations Great Ape Survival project, which set up the conference, said the nations' joint commitment was an important step forward.

"The declaration affirms political will at the highest level for the first time in the history of the great apes," project spokesman Matthew Woods said.

The UN body hopes the agreement will help stamp out poaching for bush meat, animal trafficking and deforestation which has destroyed the creatures' habitats.

The countries involved have appealed for international aid and development agencies to back their efforts.

The agencies should "make it a priority to develop and implement policies which promote ecologically sustainable livelihoods for local and indigenous communities", they said in a statement.

Henri Dojombo, environment minister for DRC, told the AFP news agency more resources were needed from developed countries to safeguard the great apes.

He said: "Whether it be for research or for action on the ground, we need money. It is poverty in the first place that leads to poaching." Scientists at the conference identified more than 100 sites, most of them in Africa, where viable great ape populations could be saved from extinction by intensive conservation efforts.
goddamnit, can't you ever post good news?
Well, there was that one about a sunni who lost his life trying to save as many shias as he could in Irag (when the bridge collapsed). But, then again, the death may take away from the good news.
sarcasm?
No, truth.

Africa is a pretty fucked up place, staying out of the area in general is a good idea. Besides we already have the middle east to worry about, oil is important apes are not.

that's true, apes aren't important... wildlife in general should take a backseat. I mean, fuck, what has it ever done for us? I can't drive my GMC Yukon to the Wal-Mart using ferrets and chimps for fuel.

christ, Zo, grow the fuck up man. Apes? What the fuck do apes do? They just roam around, n' eat n' shit.

Open that motherfucking Alaska up and let's tap that shit. Daddy needs a new Dodge Ram 2500.

More civil than my response would be.

fuck it, we're just a bunch of tree huggin' liberals who don't care about You and Me.

And Africa!? Who the fuck wants to help out africa for ANYTHING? I mean South Africa is on the brink of setting the example for what a multicultural democracy could be like. WHY THE fuck WOULD WE WANT TO HELP THAT!?

It's not like Uganda and Ethiopia have overcome serious crisises in the 50s-80s to become fairly stable with very little outside help (because like most of You and Me, we don't give a shit, but we love our live aid concerts or whatever the fuck) and help show the first glimpse of a war torn continent - plauged by centuries of western and eastern oppression, aids, poverty and racism - is on the upturn.

yeah, fuck em'

Yes....SA the shinning star of multicultural democracy, perhaps we should take a trip down memory lane.

Africa is on the whole not worthy of our attention, let me know when they discover oil there.;)

Oh and if you want to blame someone for Africa go blame the Europeans, it's 90% their fault, let them clean it up instead of just bitching about the problem.

So, what we have here is a complete handing over of power from the dominant Afrikaaners to the "Blacks" and a new government formed where all races are allowed to vote and participate. Two races that were bitterly forced against eachother for over 100 years manage to create a structure of government that nutures racial harmony instead of a civil war (ya know, like ours).

Yes, there are lots of problems in South Africa, but at least there Black people aren't ignored and allowed to drown.

Since 1994, more than 8 million SA blacks have moved above the poverty line contrary to our lower class and miniorities who are experiencing some of the worst poverty increases since the great depression.

It's always funny when people put up timelines that end 10 years ago.

South Africa has a long long way to go towards equality and as far as the hurricane is concerned Bush doesn't care because they are poor and Democratic. If it had been a city of poor white democrats he wouldn't have given a shit either.

I say we take everyone out of Africa and make it one huge protected area everyone would be better off.

On a more serious note, something has to be done because many species are being hunt to extinction. It would be horrible world to live in if you were to take kids or grandkids to a Zoo and shows the Gorillas and for them to learn that Zoos are the only place you will see this gentle animal so closely related to us. We have a tendency as humans to put nature last but a lot of our problems could be solved by working with Nature. The hurricane would have been much less severe if there were more natural barriers such as the wetlands and the those small islands off the cost. We fucK nature, we get fucKed by it in the long run. We need to stop taking the cheaper quick solution and finally start taking the longer more expensive route

My thing is great apes are the easiest to explain, their mental capacity is the most evident. You can show chickens being beaten and boiled alive in factories, but some just don't care what happens because they're chickens and "stupid". If you have an animal, like a chimp or bonobo, that is equal or superior to 4 year old pre school children, I don't understand that. If you have another animal that can learn human language, teach human language, form new words, pass on culture, create tools, and on a darker side do things like fight prolonged wars (not just sudden conflict, goodall documented a particularly bitter relationship with another chimpanzee tribe that produced multiple conflicts and prolonged fighting and was slowly exterminated by the one she was with), I don't understand logic like zions towards them. If another animal can enter the realm of human intelligence, then it's on the same level (and there have been efforts in the scientific community for some, particularly chimps and bonobos, to be categorized as human). Without applying some divine form of human uniqueness or rejection of humans as animals (unfounded scientifically), it doesn't make sense to me.

But, on africa, conscious racism or not, it seems that many people still think of africans in much the same way people used to think of blacks. Now it's not so much that they're inferior because they're blacks, but because they're african. And on slaves, people often dismiss it as a european issue, but it's like drugs, which one is more to blame, the supply or the demand? Demand is going to increase the supply. That, along with colonization, has had ripple effects that exist to this day. Previously, while horrendous, the slave trade existed more as the results of war (and not war caused solely for the capture of slaves, which happened because of the demand from the americas). It utilized what was there, slavery was practiced in africa and it essentially purchased and worked on a smaller, sustainable scale. The combination of an ideology of a complete and total white superiority (and later "white mans burden") and the overwhelming demand in the americas caused the destruction of the african societies that had existed. It became like columbia, where the drug trade became so massive (plus american responce and the drug gangs) that it destroyed the country.
