My Razer m100 protones finally broke, I don't know why, but the left one is REALLY faint now. So I need a new pair. I'm debating between going cheap-mid again or going all out and getting a pair of shures. Since I know there are some serious audiophiles on this site, could you guys post some reccomended pairs ($150 is the MAX I'd spend).

Thanks for the help.

I like my in-ear skull candies but you can get some nicer skull candies for under $100 if you want. They have really good sound and the cheapest over-ears run at about $40 i think. My in-ears were $10 and work very well.

Uhh I hate skull candies. To me they are the poor man's shure/sennheiser. I have a pair of Everglide S-500 around ear headphones I like but they are waaaaay to bulky.

No don't get me wrong, my last headphones weren't expensive either but everything I've heard from audiophiles is that with skullcandys you get what you pay for.

I don't have a single suggestion for you, except that there are much better places to find out about headphones. If you are really serious about near-audiophile headphones, check out
http://www.head-fi.org/

If you just want some suggestions, you can also find a pretty good list of IEMs, canalphones, and earbuds here, along with some links and some reviews:

I would recommend getting some ideas from that list, and checking some reviews. Also keep in mind that the price ranges they suggest are just MSRP. You can often find better deals than that.

The reason I can't give specific recommendations is, once you get to higher and higher quality headphones, you'll hear that even headphones that are about the same quality still sound different. At that point, it begins to be less how objectively "good" they sound, and more what kind of music you listen to most, since some headphones handle some kinds of music better than others. (Like at head-fi, you'll see a lot of people who prefer Etymotics, but in my opinion those are almost strictly for classical music because they don't have nearly enough punch or bass for any other types of music, even jazz).

I've recently been on the earbud hunt as well. It's been a sad journey. I've been using JVC Marshmallows -- http://www.amazon.com/JVC-SQDHAFX34B-HAFX34B-Marshmallow-Headphones/dp/B0012UKOV2/ -- for the past 2 years and have loved 'em, but wanted to upgrade. $10.

My first shot was JBuds J2 Hi-Fis -- http://www.amazon.com/JBuds-Premium-Isolating-Earbuds-Electric/dp/B001GS8FZM/ -- decent, but a step down from the Marshmallows. Poor sound isolation no matter the tip. $30.

Next was the V-Moda Bass Freqs -- http://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-Bass-Freq-Earbuds-Bling/dp/B000FUESSU -- bass far too overpowering, it just sounded as if the treble were turned all the way down. Recommended by SlickDeals and a bad move, crap if you like accurate sound. $25.

Most recently I went for the UE3's -- http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Super-fi-Studio-Earphones-Black/dp/B000B5XU06/ -- great reviews on Head-Fi, everybody loved 'em, claimed the only phones comparable anywhere near this price range were the Shure SCL4's.. I gotta say, the sound is definitely better than the other 3 but not amazing, and they're not comfortable enough to deal with mediocre sound for the price (and they look a little dumb). $80.

I now own 4 pairs of earbuds and am still using the $10 2-year old Marshmallows... eventually I'll probably give the Shure SCL4's a shot but I'm waiting for them to hit $80 again.

I came here to post this thread, but was pleasantly surprised to find a set of suggestions already here.
my stock iPod headphones became the victim of careless placement and the weight of a human simultaneously.

Looked around at almost all the links given and wasn't quite ready to drop down $35-$50 for replacements that looked relatively tolerable so I went with some green marshmallows from amazon for ~$12. at least if I don't like these it's not a huge loss.

Well,
I've been reading Head-Fi's forum's a bit and I decided on the 140 (125 after YTECH10 coupon code) phonak Audeo PFEs. They seem to be getting rave reviews and people are saying they run with the high end headphones.

If you feel like spoiling yourself a little more you could get Koss PortaPros. I've heard they sound fantastic and for $50 it's hard to go wrong.

Try the Bose noice cancellation buds. They work great for me and i love my music. THey keep out the backgroubd noise.
Mine cost $100.
