CAGiversary!

My birthday is coming this month (31st to be exact) and my rents and brother keep bothering me about what they should get me.

I'm one of those people that never wants / needs anything and I usually attempt to stay away from asking for things that are video game related (as I know they'll buy from Wal-Mart or somewhere like that and pay more than they should).

So, I was hoping the CAG's out there could help me think of some good ideas (I'll be turning 22 if that helps at all). My parents will probably spend around $100 and my brother will probably spend somewhere between $30 and $60. The only video game related item I may considern is a handheld, but I haven't used one since the original GameBoy, so I'd need LOTS of guidance (although I'd prefer a Nintendo handheld if I go that route).

Thanks in advance,
Will

A Nintendo DS would not at all be a bad option. Have the parents get the system and your brother get you a game or two for it.

The DS is pretty good, maybe your parents and brothers could combine and get you that and a game or something. If you're interested in something else, give us some ideas. I'm almost the same age as you and my family spends about the same for my Bday, and I always have a hard time thinking of ideas for gifts since I usually find a way to get the stuff I want for myself much cheaper than they could.

DS is definitely better than SP and can play all the GBA games (although you can't play Game Boy Color and older games on it)

Yea, for around $150 you can get the Nintendo DS and a game as a bundle deal. I bought mine in December, and am totally loving it.

Have you considered asking them to give you the money so you can shop for yourself? That way, you can get the stuff you want at the cheapest possible price. Or, you can find it cheap yourself online, and just give them the link to the item so they can order it. That is what I do with my wife. If you got the money, you could buy one from a CAG here for a good deal.

yea,it's better to get money at least you can get more out of that buck.Plus, its better to hold for DS Lite. You can also ask your parents to give you one of those credit card gift card at least you can shop anywhere you want

That credit card idea might work (they won't give me the cash, so that is out...)

The DS is sounding better to me...so it plays all the games that play on the SP, plus the DS games?

Does SP do anything DS doesn't?

Yes,you can play all gameboy advance games on Nintendo Ds.The DS is capable of all sp functions, but sp have one advantage. You can actually put in pocket without hurting yourself. The DS is huge and isnt meant to be carried in your pocket. This is the reason you wait for DS Lite. The size and weight is reduce signifciantly and the screen is better lighted.

Many large chains now are offering $130 deal which is Nintendo ds and your choice of one nintendo first party game such as Advance Wars,Kirby and Mario. If I were you I would wait because once the DS Lite is out is make the older version oblsolete, thus it will reduce theoverall price. The problem is you have to wait prolly till november for the release of Nintendo lite.

Its your gift or money. You decide what best for you.

Like ZForce mentioned, you can only play DS and GBA games on the DS. You can't play original Gameboy or Gameboy Color games on the DS (but you can on the SP).

DS = Dual Screen. It has an upper regular screen and a lower touch-screen (like a PDA). You might want to try it out first at most any store's display (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart) before deciding.

The SP has the best backlit screen going right now (until the DS Lite comes out), and it's only $80. Personally if you haven't touched GBA yet, you might want to start with that, the library is huge enough without adding a few DS games.

Final Note: stay away from the Sony PSP if you want games. It's been out for a while now, and there's still nothing justifying the $250 MSRP unless you really want a portable movie viewer/music player.

BTW: Congratulations on being the only existing 20something CAG who doesn't know what a DS is. I won't be so rude as to mention something along the lines of "Clueless Ass Gamer", that would just be wrong... :)

Thanks for the help and the funny comments. I do know what a DS is, I have just never been interested in portable gaming until VERY recently, and therefore, have not followed it AT ALL.

I do appreciate the help, so thanks again - even if you made me look like an @$$ :)

He knows to ask. Whenever people are willing to help, that's quite enough.

So if I were to get a DS or a GBA SP and I could only get 1 game, what would you all suggest?

I enjoy RPG's and platformers and hate shooters and racing games.

Thanks again.

For reference: I am leaning towards SP right now since DS Lite looks better than DS to me and it won't be out til November...since my B-day is March, I'll probably go w/ GBA SP.

final fantasy tactics advance, mario and luigi, kingdom hearts all are good rpgs you may show an interest in. If you cant find them around your end I have cart only copies that id be willng to sell cheap.

Platformers:

1.Super Mario Advance 1,2,3,4-all great games, but I rather prefer mario allstar
2.Klonoa 1,2-very underated platformer
3.Castlevania Double Pack-good mix of rpg and platform
4.Mario Deluxe(color)-Extra modes and stages.Way better then classic mario
5.Wario 1,2,3,4-Very fun,it good to be evil and gready. The problem is it's too easy and you can never die.
6.Metroid Zero-entire remake of metroid one.Use the metroid 3 style
7.Metroid Fusion-Fun game if you like metroid 3 for snes
8.Metal Slug-I never played it before
9.Donkey Kong 1,2,3 -remake of snes
10.Mario Golden Coins-one of the best marios of all time.Very fun,but it is very short

Rpg:
1.Golden Sun 1,2-rpg with mix of puzzle solving and rpg elements
2.ogre tactics-8 different endings, great rpg still not as great compare to ff series
3.fftactics advance-fun game with class skills, but some people hate the refrees. The game is not as great compared to the playstation version.
4.final fantasy dawn of souls-remake of 1 &2 in one cart
5.final fantasy iv-Remake of final fantasy ii of snes with improve graphics
6.Mario Luigi Saga-good mix of platformer and rpg.Unique
7.Breath of Fire 1,2 -a good rpg,but their is better rpgs out there
8.Any of the Pokemon-it has rpg element, good if you like any of pokemon games
9.Fire Emblem 1,2-Great strategy rpg.The worst feature about the game is it very hardcore, once your character is dead they can't be revived throughout the game
10.Kingdom Heart COM-Too Deja-vu,reused graphics and characters. No strategy wats so ever. All you need is a stack of 9 & 0.9 for offensive and 0 to counter any attack including special

If you actually have the money you could of purchase 10 of these games for $100(if you can find them in the clearance).Out of all those game,I would prolly choose Castlevania Double since you get two great games for the price of one and is a good mix of platform and rpg.

Thanks fatbeer and Basketcase - those sound like some good suggestions and games that I would definately be interested in.

If you haven't been into portable gaming for a while, you might want to think twice if it is for you or not. If you have a long commute or an easy job where you have lots of downtime, then definitely go for a portable system. I really like my DS and think its a great system all around, but I honestly don't use it that much. I used it a lot more in the summer because I could just go chill out in the yard and play it, but with school and work now I don't find much time to play a portable. And, since I'm indoors when I do have a chance I usually just go with the PS2 or GC. If you do get a DS or even an SP, I recommend either Castlevania: Circle of the Moon or Aria of Sorrow (haven't played the other one) or Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Mario 64 is good for the DS too, since I never played it on the N64 in the first place.

Yeah, sardonicism is one of my strong points...I'll probably get fired for it someday.

Coincidentally, I got online tonight for one reason: I needed to find the location of the Hammer Brothers to get my ultra-hammer in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, I kid you not...I've been hooked on that game for the past week. I would definitely recommend M&L as a great action-RPG.

Aria Of Sorrow from the Castlevania Double Pack wins best RPG/Platformer combo. (Recent release, still easily found at Best Buy for $24.99 w/GGC)

Great list, Fatbeer, but you forgot one: Mario Golf: Advance Tour

It's golf, and strangely RPGish...same with Mario Tennis, but it could never compare to the golf.

Oh, and let's not forget this gem:
