Help with choosing an AGP Geforce 7600 GS Card

myqq

CAGiversary!
Hello fellow CAGers,

Please help me in choosing the right (better?) 7600 GS card.
Right now, I have 2 candidates:
- PNY 7600 GS 512MS AGP
http://www2.pny.com/7600-GS-512MB-AGP--P1897C14.aspx

- eVGA e-Geforce 7600 GS
http://evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=256-A8-N542-AX&family=22

As you probably would have thought, both card are pretty similar. The only main difference between the two is in the memory:
- PNY has 512MB DDR-SDRAM (specs says it has 540 MHz effective, and 8.64GB/Sec. Memory Bandwidth)

-eVGA card has half that (256 MB) RAM, but it is DDR2 RAM. The specs says:
800 MHz (effective)
12.8 GB/s Memory Bandwidth

Now, should I go for speed (eVGA) or amount of memory (PNY)?

I have not upgraded my video card since the Geforce 5500 FX days (so slow...) and would like to pick a good AGP card to get it over with (since I am not planning to move to PCIe anytime soon).

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

Go with speed. Extra RAM won't do you any good. Unless you're running ungodly resolutions, you wouldn't even need the 256.

Thanks! I am running a relatively old P4 2.4GHz (w/1GB RAM)...no plan to run those ultra-super-HD vga resolutions. As long as I can get a decent framerate (which my 5500FX couldn't do), I am happy.

I'll go with the eVGA card then. Thanks Quillion!

I've been eyeing the AGP 7600GS's for a few weeks now, but am waiting for the faster AGP 7600GT's to finally hit the market instead. Would be a great update from the 9500 Pro in my Shuttle and isn't ungodly large and overpriced like the AGP 7800GS is.

Well, I've personally had a bad experience with a PNY card. Basically my card broke (artifacts on screen) and I couldn't get a replacement because of the way their warrenty works. They claim to have a "lifetime" warrenty, but it's actually the shelf lifetime of the card. So if your card is even a little out of date you're outta luck.

I suggest going for a BFG card. Like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143069 at Newegg.

Thanks for the help! The BFG card is actually a combination of both PNY (512MB RAM) and eVGA (type of RAM).

The price is also within my range.

Thank you very much!

Really ($200)? Let me check it out. Can I ask you which company's card (PNY, eVGA, BFG, others) did you get?

Is 7800GS a lot better than 7600GS?
