Hexic HD: Pure Luck?

Also does anyone know if you get blown up or lose in Hexic if it counts towards the completed 100 games of Hexic achievement? Or do you need to finish the game with the black pearls for it to count as a completed game?

I will ask this again because I need to know if my games (save one) so far have been in vain.

Interesting that this thread pops up this week, as I've been on a Hexic kick recently, and just 'beat' the game for the first time on Monday. Many, many nervous moments, and more than one semi-miraculous move to just defuse a bomb with a "1" showing on it.

Speaking of bombs, can they ever show up in an impossible situation? I'm assuming that when they show up, there's always at minimum one sequence of moves that can defuse them.

Hexic* is a truly great puzzle game that I think most people (not here, of course) aren't willing to invest the time in to begin to think hexagonally. Maybe that's why it was free on the HDD, as selling it for 800 or so on XBLA arcade would've made it a bona fide...bomb.

(Smacks forehead)

*--You also have to love that 'Dust Brothers' ambient music. Puzzle Fight Club?

I've definitely had it happen and it's very infuriating especially when you're an hour deep into a game.

See, I know I asked the question, but logic would suggest that no bomb is impossible to defuse. I think the trick is not to match it with other pieces in some extremely difficult situations, but to trigger a chain reaction that would wipe out the bomb in the process. Unfortunately, one could only accomplish this through luck, being a Hexic idiot savant, or a supergenius.

Yeah, first option for me, too.

I got the achievement by starting timed games and letting myself die. I think it took me 10 more games. Cheap, I know, but I paid my dues with the game.
The only reason I stopped playing was because it takes like 2 hours to play one game if you sit and think about it. Maybe I'll give it a shot tonight...
Aren't the recent good puzzle games that way? Lumines is like that, too.

That's one reason I like Picross so much: You feel like you're achieving something because you're solving bite-sized puzzles. And unlike sudoku, there's a little picture at the end. I've been playing Picross DS (import) pretty much non-stop these days. The only version to come to US was on Game Boy; I also have it on GBC and Super Famicom.

Thanks for the definitive response. I have to believe I'm somewhere in the 50-66% range towards the "Hexic Addict" Achievement.

On that note, even-money odds that I get the "Endless Mode" Achievement in Bejeweled 2 Deluxe by the end of the 360's lifespan! (Only halfway there stage-wise, which actually means about 25-30% of the way there timewise, I'd guess.)

I've definitely had them where my only hope was for 2 of the same color to drop down after clearing space (and it didn't happen, even with optimal moves.)

Watch some videos on Youtube, at the beginning its somewhat luck, but you have to set up a grid system, and when you do that, the possibilities are endless.

My problem is i always make a bunch of stars but they end up falling on each other (converts to points). Also, by the time I place four stars by a color the damn bomb kills me.
Is it possible to actually be good at this game or is it all luck? I mean, I'm not really planning out moves in advance or anything and getting that star shape is next to impossible to just set up. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or anything on how to improve...
I kick ass at the game. Got all achievements. I dont think I will ever play it again. I am a Tetris Evolution addict. And I thought Hexic would help ween me onto other puzzle games.. but no... its fun, it has tons and tons of strategy (believe it or not)... but alas.. its only worth having if you got it for free.

Yea its a great free game. I also love playing this with friends, more heads are better than one. Once you get what you were going for the rewards are very pleasing. I've only been able to get one pearl in my career, ah I'm not going to try for three.

I don't understand the appeal of this game...I can't stand it. I like games like chess, backgammon, and checkers...but this is just so boring. It's no wonder this game is free...honestly I think you can play it on MSN or something. (Though maybe not as much stuff included on the MSN version)

The thing that drives me nuts about Hexic is two of the colors look nearly identical on my TV. I've resorted to putting up the symbols.

Any game that you start and finish counts toward the 100 game achievement.

oh man this game is addicting........and probably very misunderstood.

i have to admit that when i first played it i was just playing it like bejeweled. i had no clue about the stars and the pearls......i just figured it was another "jewel game". when i started reading what all of you had to say about it I thought i'd give it another try - and i'm glad i did.

fun!

i managed to get my first two pearls ever and had my first star working on the third pearl when a bomb dropped with no similar colors nearby. there might have been a way to save it, but i couldn't find it. oh well......i'll definintely be playing this a lot more this week. thanks!

I just got my 1st black pearl right now!!! :D I am so happy. Never thought I'd do it, but like many others have said, just keep practicing.

Before, I would just go for the quick 3 piece combos, but now I began planning each move and working my way up little by little. Wow.

With some more patience, time, and practice, I think I can get the bigger combos/achievements.

See this is why this game is great. You can play as a novice and keep matching up sets or you can play as an advanced player and go for stars and pearls. I think the game is designed very well and it is one of the few puzzle games I really like besides bejweled.

Edit: Woooo I just got a pearl and my game ended as 205,420 before a bomb dropped into a "no match" zone.
