I been wanting to do this for a long time, my topic in Gaming forums finally catalyzed me into actually doing so!!

Like all discussion threads in this forum, let's use this to rant, talk of news, review, argue, etc all things rap music and hip-hop culture.

To begin, here's my top albums of the year so far (only 3 as of now)

Molemen - Killing Fields
Evidence - Weatherman LP
Prodigy & Alchemist - Return of the Mac

more hot shit to come!!!

Redman's Red Gone Wild was a pretty good album also. This year so far has been kind of disappointing with the good stuff. But then again it's only April.

Is that Prodigy album really worth listening to? I've heard some good stuff about it, but I could never take him seriously after he went from "I got you stuck on the realness" to "I'll throw a TV at you crazy".

And as for as 07 goes, Sean P >>

I also can't wait for Canibus's new album to drop. Anyone hear that long ass freestyle he has?

I've heard some of the tracks on the Prodigy album. It's good, but it's not spectacular.

Yeah the Prodigy album is ok. I think he has declined lyrically the past few years.

Here are my favorite albums so far this year:

Nor - Mystree
Domingo - The Most Underrated
Zeph & Azeem - Rise Up
Canto I - Entry Level | Elements
Black Milk - Popular Demand
Mr. J. Medeiros - Of Gods And Girls
Xperiance - Soultree
PolyrythymAddicts - Break Glass
Gabriel Teodros - Love Work (IMO, its the most important album to drop in atleast 10 years)
Muneshine - A Walk In The Park
Linguistics - The Writes Of Passage
Felonious - Up To Something

For the turntablists:

Mr. Hill - The Darkest Hour (its his first album and I really think he knocked it out of the park)
Joe Beats - Diverse Recourse (blows Reverse Discourse out of the water)
Scratch Perverts - Watch The Ride (though I could have done without the QOTSA remix by UNKLE, this is their best album to date and is a must own)
DJ Vadim - The Sound Catcher (Though I still say his USSR albums are must listens, I would be lying if I didn't admit that this is his best album when it comes to music with lyrics. His song with Abstract Rude is the fucking shit)
Wax Tailor - Hope & Sorrow (this is gonna sound cheesy but this is the music to walk in the rain to. Its a continious mix but there is nothing on that makes you wish it wasn't. Top notch through the whole thing and is 1 of the 5 I have so far in the running for Top Album Of The Year)
Dub Pistols - Speakers & Tweeters (Though its their most accesible album to date, its one of their best. No weak links as Rodney P, Blade, Terry Hall and TK bring their A game. And though "Give You Time" is a light fluffy radio friendly song, I think its an album seller on top of the kick ass songs "Peaches" and Rapture")

edit: For my favorite song of the year, its Jazz Liberatorz with Tre, Fatlip and Omni - Ease My Mind

Here is some reviews I've written so far

Mr. Hill - The Darkest Hour (2007)

If you dig DJ Spooky and DJ Krush's style of soundscape music, this is one to grab this year. He is the DJ to the hip hop group Oldominion and its his first instramental album but I think he hit it out of the park. It is playful but it has a sense of dread for what will change in the future. One song will have a sound of the future but then follow it up with a song that samples Emmylou Harris that says that the world would be brighter if we didn't break up.

Gabriel Teodros - Lovework (2007)

If you have been keeping an eye on underground Hip Hop, you would have noticed that the North West US has been blowing up these past few years. Now there has been a shitload of great albums coming out from that region but this is THE masterpiece. Gabriel Teodros is from Euthopia and this album deals with a standard fish out of water with an eye to what his life was like over there story (it paints a picture a bit different than what we see on a U2 psa or a Sally Strothers ad). He has great wordplay and his delivery is top notch. IMO, this is one of the most important albums to drop in a long time.

Felonious - Up To Something (2007)

This has a weird pedgree. The are an a arty San Fran group but the tracks with beats (most songs have a live band) are from DJs in Germany which is where the album was recorded. Honestly, they sound like Jurassic 5 (before they fell off with the album Feedback) without biting their style. They have a solid click and they work well together without letting only one stand out. Great positive trip hip hop but then they will mix it up with a track that falls more in line with R&B but with some rhymes. This is the third album from them but the first I've heard of them.......but this won't be the last and I am going to hunt down the other two albums. Really good album

Nor- Mystree (album) 2007

Dude is an ex-gang banger, which would make you think that this album is thug shit but you would be wrong. Its a really cool downtempo backpacker album. Its from a mind of someone who after serving time, realized his mistakes and doesn't want others to make the same mistakes he did. His song Education is an addmitance that the US school system is fucked up but you are the only one to be blamed for not taking advantage of if, "Its there but do you have the ambition?". His song Crash talks about drugs may be a temporary relief but it can lead you down to the path of ruin if thats all you become about. Now this album isn't going to set the underground sales charts on fire but I wish it would as this is one of the honest albums I've heard in quite while. I hope he makes enough money to release another album, we need more albums like this.

Wax Tailor - Hope And Sorrow (album) 2007

Its a DJ from France that has slowly built up a pedigree for the last three years only to release this album that is hopefully poised to take the world by storm. He uses samples and singers as if he was a movie director crafting his downtempo movie that typically carries a theme. This is going to sound cheesy but its the best way to describe this album is "Music to walk in the rain to". The first song/intro is a sample that sets off his mandate on how samples are used to form new songs which leads into a funky 40's style lounge song that would fit as a James Bond movie intro as the second song. If you dig DJ Krush, early DJ Vadim or trip hop, you can't go wrong with this album.
Waiting for the new Talib is all I can say.

Oh, and wishing Jurassic 5 wouldn't break up.
Now if only it would get a firm release date.

You knew it was bound to happen once Chemist left (though I guess you could say Power In Numbers was the first sign of a downfall).

No love for El-P's I'll Sleep When You're Dead? That's been my favorite one so far. It's not the easiest listen, but I've found it captivating nonetheless.

Pharoahe Monch's Desire comes out May 1 -- I've got a good feeling about this one.

One thing I've been wondering... Where's Deltron 3030's second album? I remember last fall Automator said it'd be done by the end of the year. We're more than a quarter into the new year...

Another delay would be Talib's new album. It was delayed from November of last year to June of this year.

A new Deltron album would be fantastic though.

hip hop isnt dead its just that rap gets more air and tv time which is cool with me because id prefer all the ignorant folks to buy into rap and all the fake bs it sells and leave hip hop to the real music lovers who know the difference between meaningful quality rhymes and crap put out there to sell a fake image and sell overly expensive stuff. and i blame mtv for all of that shit but it doesnt matter much anymore since they rarely ever show videos anymore.

man i remember the days when you could watch that channel all day and never get bored with it..........

good artists to listen to the roots, common, kanye( yeah hes a whiny bitch but hes got some clever rhymes) xibits first 2 albums( sucks he fell off after join with dre and now hes pimping ugly cars) mos def and older outkast albums( ataliens-atleins) i forget the spelling but that album still has legs.

I agree with you, man. El-P really pulled out all the stops with this one. Also, I just saw Kid Koala in concert and he said the new Deltron is coming out soon....I hope he's right.

And Desire... I heard it got pushed back to June. I've been waiting for that to drop for so goddamned long. Pharoahe Monch is one of my faves and I need some new friggin' material besides his Clinton Sparks mixtape.

My last two favorite albums have been:
Nas - Hip Hop is Dead
Kanye West - Late Registration

I drive about an hour to school and back home twice a week and when kanye dropped i listened to it every drive the whole semester. I like the vibe of cds where i can listen to them from beginning to end and enjoy pretty much every song.

actually to quote kanye "drop my new shit, it sound like the best of".

Some of my favorite albums in recent years:

Zion-I: True&Livin'

NO I.D: Accept your own and be yourself

Immortal Technique: Revolutionary Vol.2

I also LOVE this album:

Slum Village - Slum Village (Self-titled)

My favorite recent album is Lupe Fiasco.

Haven't gotten the newest Nas or Ghostface albums yet. Just been spending money on other stuff like kids.

I just want to call attention to Sev Statik & Dust's upcoming album Back to Dust, which will be part of the Rawkus 50. You can listen to some songs at their MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/sumoraps.

Really though, I just want to call attention to the entire Deepspace5 crew to which they belong. You've probably never heard of DS5, but its members do some things here and there that might get them a little fame... Maybe a show at SXSW (Listener), being a finalist on MTV's "The Cut" (Playdough), a great review at OkayPlayer.com (Sivion), a guest spot on an MF Doom album (Manchild), feature spots for Prince Po of Organized Konfusion and Cappadonna of Wu-Tang Clan (Mars ILL), etc. Nothing big, but just enough to give them some credibility, I guess...

lol fart_bubble, I havent heard of a single one of those guys.

But Prodigy's album is real good. The beats all sample blaxploitation era music and every song is about guns. That's what Mobb Deep does best after all. Prodigy definitely stepped his lyrics up since some of his more recent offerings on mobb deep albums (which sucked!) but he isn't on the 'stuck off the realness/draw first blood be the first to set it off/I put my lifetime in between these papers lines' level anymore, must be his health.

sarang>> I never heard any of tasha's albums, but I got the mp3s on my computer. I should load them up soon. The last k-rap I heard was Epik High 4, which sucked!!

same with El-P, I got his new record of emusic but havent listened to it yet. Too much music backlog~!!

still gotta hear new Redman album, probably gonna buy it soon.

Sean Price's album was actually kinda disappointing. It's a great record, but it's no Monkey barz, which was my favorite album 2005 (along with Little Brother and Opio)

I've been digging that RA The Rugged Man verse on the new JMT album tho, that shit was crazy!!

finally, to all the Hiero fans, A-Plus solo album drops tuesday!!!! I will probably pick up Redman at the same time. Opio's solo, as stated earlier, is one of my favorites!!! that shit is sooo good. I heard Tajai's solo once, but it was an emusic copy, which was edited -_- couldnt enjoy it too much, but definitely wanna give it another listen sometime.
I really hope Ear Drum both comes out soon and is good. I'm diggin' the few songs that have been released so far.
Yeah I hope it's good. I heard a couple songs also and they were pretty good.

I just got turned onto some amazing stuff outa oakland. group called THE COUP. main MC's name is boots and his DJ is Pam the funkstress (who also runs a catering company on the side). If you like immortal technique you gotta check out the coup. Best line of the whole album: Bush and Husssein together in bed, givin H-E-A-D head, ya'll motherfuckers heard what we said, millions made and millions dead.

Oh yea, one of their albums is called genocide and juice.

They are on the epitath record label (traditionally punk record label).

The Coup is the shit though I do have to say that I prefere their thier albums: Steal This Album, Party Music and Pick A Bigger Weapon since they've seem to have grown up from thier early albums.

I just want to say Sol.illaquists Of Sound have great customer service on their site with no automated bullshit but an actual person who is quick to respond when you happen to order a shirt in a size they ran out of.

I just got Young Buck's new album 'Buck the World' and it's complete crap. Avoid it like the plague.

Buck his album then :)

Har har, I made a funny ;P

Since majority of people in this thread wouldn't get 50 feet close to shit like Young Buck, I don't think anyone would have to worry about picking up that shit.

;)

I didnt actually buy it, I gave it a few listens though (I'm willing to give anything a fair chance if isn't complete shit, y'know?). And I cant stand G-Unit, 50 Cent, etc. but I was curious about this and well, it just sucks. Ass.
I should probably check out both the Coup and Sol.illaquists of Sound.
If you happen to dig Sol.illaquists of Sound, make sure you check out All Good Funk Alliance as two members (Alexandra and Swamburger) are on about 60% of thier tracks. You can check out their album As If We Existed on their site: www.soilla.com

I think you mistyped the link
http://www.solilla.com/
^^works

Wish they had at least one song on their site to listen to. I'll have to see if they are in the torrentosphere to DL later. I assume they are anti-establishment or politically active in some manner? Cool art on their site.

oops

Go here http://www.solilla.com/main.html and click on the MPC right next to the Soilla tag up top. each square on the MPC is a different song clips on the As If We Existed album

I'll probably grab one of the Sol.illa albums soon...meaning tonight or tomorrow.

Anywho, listening to King Geedorah reminds me how much I need a new MF DOOM album. Whether its DangerDOOM, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn or Madvillain...I need something. Perhaps that friggin' Ghost and DOOM album.

The Coup are dope. I first heard of them with the song "Fat Cats, Bigga Fish." They're getting some good recognition these days, being on OkayPlayer and all.

I managed to pick up the Sol.illaquists' latest album when Tower was closing, in a stack of $1 CDs that included the Sound Providers' An Evening with the Sound Providers, Daedelus' Denies the Day's Demise, Dabrye's Two/Three, KMD's Bl_ck B_st_rds, Flying Lotus' 1983, and Ugly Duckling's Bang for the Buck.

Hey, what are you talking about. I liked Power In Numbers. I've liked all of Jurassic 5's albums and finfd it to be probably the best of alternative hip-hop or underground hip-hop or whatever moniker/lavbel it goes by today.

Just for clarification, Deltron 3030 is a supergroup project that consists of members Del tha Funkee Homosapien (MC), Dan the Automator (producer), and Kid Koala (DJ). What makes it confusing is that within the group Del plays a character named Deltron Zero, thus making most people assume that the album is a solo effort.

I'd be remiss if I didn't add that all three members have solo material well worth checking out. They're all stars in their own right.

I agree. I don't see Power in Numbers as a sign of downfall. It had more of a mainstream bent than Quality Control's purist approach but that didn't make it anything less in my eyes.

Feedback on the other hand... I'm just not gonna talk about it. :nottalking:

Anyone here like 2pac's work (I'm sure more than a few of you do)? While I'm not a huge fanatic like most of his fans are, he had a few great albums under his belt. Did anyone here like 2001's 'Until the End of Time'? I personally think it might be his best work, despite him not having much to do with it besides the vocals. The production is sound and it represents all the sides of Pac.

but he was dead for a few years in 01 -_-

still, Me Against the World is the shit, but it's also sadly the only album I really kno him for...

not having heard All Eyes on Me is a bigger shame than never listening to The Infamous until 2003

btw Del's album is prolly never gonna come out, he's become the new Fatlip!!!

and yeay the Coup is dope, but I never heard of these soliloqui cats or whatever, I hope they're on emusic!

I'm a pretty big Pac fan and most of his posthumous work is a turn-off for me, although the track "Until the End of Time" is one of my favorites. Me Against the World is also one of my favorite albums.

Power In Numbers wasn't bad but its such a HUGE letdown compared to to the EP and QC plus it showed that they were susceptible to releasing the shit that is Feedback.

If you want to hear a group the carries the same vibe of J5 (QC era) , I've gotta give big props to Felonious.

Black Bastards for a dollar? fuck! That was one hell of a find, worth a lot and quite rare. The best gems I've found were Ras Kass's Soul On Ice for $9 and Kool G Rap's Live and Let Die for $3.
