Hitatchi 320GB 2.5" 5400RPM SATA drive for PS3 @ NewEgg.com, Now $59.99 AR ($20)

I'm really tempted. I have the 80gb model and am unsure if I actually need anymore space. I probably will, eventually, in the next 5 years or whatever. But then again, there will be other deals by then.

I haven't actually gotten my PS3 yet. What would I use all that room for? What do you guys use your space for? Videos and things, I'd imagine? Or can you install games a la New Xbox Experience? Blu-rays would take up a ton of space, huh? Unless the Blu-rays aren't usually full.

Oh, so there are game installs? For all games, or just the ones that offer them?

Yeah, I think getting this might be a good idea. I could install it before ever even turning on my PS3. Or... I suppose I'd have to turn it on to copy the data off the stock HDD, though, wouldn't I. But still.

This is probably too good to pass up. 320 is a lot of breathing room.

Although... I can't get the link to work. The second one works fine, but not the first. And speaking of that second link, would the faster RPM be of benefit on a PS3?

The majority of 3rd party titles have installation files, some of which take up as much as 5GB's--with a large HDD, you pretty much don't have to worry about managing these large installs due to space limitations.

Also, I use my PS3 as my media hub, so the extra space is great for my hundreds of CD's worth of music.

Finally, because PSN titles have no size limit, some of them can be rather large (I think R&C Quest For Booty is like 2-3 GB's).

[Question]: Will Harddrives like these start getting even cheaper? Or is now the perfect time to buy one?

On a sidenote I own a 60GB Playstation 3..I figured eventually I should definitely upgrade my storage space.. 320GB is slightly more then 5x more space :) \\:D/

in the future..I may buy Blu-Ray movies off the Playstation Network.., store more music, download more games..etc.. many many things to download and install. :grouphug:

The affiliate linkage in there might be causing you an issue.

The PS3's stock drive is a 5400RPM, and some people have reported issues with 7200RPM drives for heat and power consumption. The difference in speed between the two isn't much of a difference, so it's best to stick to the 5400RPM drives for the PS3.

They always will get cheaper over time, but for the forseeable future, this is a good deal.

Thanks for the info, guys! Yeah, it sounds like 80 is going to be rather cramped. I'm going to seriously consider this. I'd be totally set for the future.

Yeah, it was the affiliate link that was messing something up. Meh, sorry Cheapy.

How much stuff comes pre-loaded on the stock drive anyway? Is it anything I'll care about or want? Or can I just swap them immediately after turning on the PS3 and browsing to see it's all pretty useless stuff? Sorry for all the questions. It's just gonna be a pain to lug a USB HDD over to the TV and find plug-ins for it and everything. Maybe it'd all fit on my 1gb thumb drive. :) Or do they come pre-loaded with a ton of useful stuff?

There. Bought one. I hope I have a screwdriver that works around here.

You can just swap it out on arrival. All the stuff like like your PSN info is saved to flash memory on the PS3 itself so even if you register to PSN first you won't have to re-do it after the swap. :)

Yea it'd be much less hassle if you switch them out right away. Easier that way then having to transfer stuff later on. I do believe you need to download something onto a cd or put it on a flash drive for the Hard drive to work now. You'd have to look it up or something.

Jesse, I think all you'll have to do is format the new drive when you put it in the PS3 (and it'll ask you to do this automatically). I don't think anything, like games or movies, is pre-loaded on the PS3 drives when you get it.

Now if you start putting stuff on there you will have to back it up to a FAT32 formatted USB connectable drive of some sort.

There's a zillion guides out there on how to do it, and I think there's one or more of them in our PS3 forums, but the gist of it is:

1) Plug in a blank USB drive, hard drive or flash drive, formatted FAT32, with enough capacity to back up what you have on the PS3's internal drive.
2) The PS3 should see the external drive and ask if you want to use it to backup your internal drive.
3) Back up everything to the external drive.
4) Once done, swap out the existing drive for the new drive.
5) Power up the PS3 and have it recognize that the new hard drive needs to be formatted, and format it.
6) Plug in the USB drive used for backup and restore everything to the internal drive.

You don't lose anything when you back everything up and restore it.

Again, if you search for "PS3 hard drive replacement" or "PS3 hard drive upgrade", or something like it, you'll find plenty of guides on the steps needed to do it.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, that sounds super easy. I was familiar with the hardware side of things, and I figured the important stuff was in the flash memory. I just didn't know if I'd be missing out on anything pre-loaded on the stock drive. Doesn't sound like there's much on there, though, if anything. Just swap in my new 320, before I even turn the PS3 on probably, format it, connect and be ready to go.

I'm totally excited. It'll be awesome to have 320gb right off the bat. I won't have to constantly be deleting stuff and managing my space!

I have a sealed PS3...should I install this right out of the box or is it better to turn on my new console once before shutting it down and installing the new HD?

Right out of the box should be fine.

I just got my 80gig PS3 and I think it showed 65gigs of actual usable space.

Game installs, PSN downloads, DLCs do take up a lot of room. Demos take up a huge chunk.

Then putting my .avi movies onto the PS3 for easy access take up even more space.

I can easily see how people can go through 300gigs of space on a PS3.

Been waiting for a good deal like this. I have a lot of videos that i put on the HD for the kids, don't have to mess with DVD at all, saves drive wear N tear.

Got mine today, and when I took the old one out I was surprised to see that it was a hitachi in there. How do it know?

This is still open I believe, too, til the 30th.

I'm really excited about mine. If all goes as Sony plans, PS3 will be a system that hits its stride much later in life than a 360 would. Don't know if it'll work like that or not, but if it does, we'll be all set with 320gb.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I read that even 10K RPM drives work fine and decrease load and installation times significantly for certain games.
Anyone know for sure whether or not this deal ends on the 30th or not? I want to get one, but have to wait until next week to do so.
Click on the rebate link to take a guess at when it'll end. My guess is probably just until the end of this week.
Anyone know of warranty issues with installing your own harddrive?
There aren't any. It's officially supported by Sony. They even supply you with the steps in the instruction manual and on their website.

One of their smarter decisions this generation, in direct contrast to Microsoft's rape of consumers when it comes to hard drives.

Should I go with an Internal HDD OR ..External HDD for my PS3?

If Internal..im probably going to go with this.

And has anyone used this HDD yet for their PS3?
Does it overheat or have the fan turn on more then the original HDD the PS3 came with?

Internal is the way to go for game saves and DLCs. I do not *believe* such content gets installed on external HDDs.

Thanks for the heads up on this, OP. Just placed my order.

I debated for a few days on whether to get this and bit on it. I also got an enclosure to use the old drive as a portable drive. I was down to about 9 GB free on my 60GB and figured I'd need it eventually and figured I might as well get it since I'm going to get Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix next week.

I also like the idea of ripping some of my DVDs and copying them over so I don't have to change discs as much. Anyone know a good way of doing it for TV DVDs? I have all 9 seasons of Seinfeld and it would be great to just throw them all on the PS3 and play whenever I wanted to watch one.

I have a related question that I also asked in the PS3 General forum. Has anyone ever had any issues when upgrading their drive and using the back-up feature? Was any information lost in the transfer? Thanks.
:whistle2:k
Is it easy to install the HDD? I'm pretty retarded when it comes to doing manual stuff like that..
Did you read the thread? :S There's a rather detailed discussion up there, I seem to remember.

(But to answer your question succinctly, I don't think you'd have a problem. It's not tough. There are screws involved, but that's about the toughest part.)

Yeah I seen what Shrike said. But the one step where you ACTUALLY install the HDD makes me nervous. I'm just curious if THAT step is.. involved.

If it is, however, just screws..hell, even I can do that!
Everything else I get.. just.. actually putting it in there.. (zing!)

I haven't dabbled with the PS3 hard drive, but yes, dealing with hard drives, in general, usually involves screws and your ability to slide something into position.

i actually just changed my stock 40gb to a seagate 320gb. setup was a breeze. my stock 40 was down to about 2gb with no demos or anything. have about 20 games worth of installs and it took up all that space. i still have 5 or so games that i didn't even put in there yet so i figured i'd just upgrade the drive.

Received the other day took only a few minutes to install and restore backup, great price, easy install, now over 50+ movies on HD. Much better experience
than the 360.
I have a related question that I also asked in the PS3 General forum. Has anyone ever had any issues when upgrading their drive and using the back-up feature? I had a 160GB ATA drive I tossed into an enclosure, formatted it in Windows for FAT32, and then attached it to the PS3. Ran the backup, took 20-30 minutes, then did the drive swap. Once the PS3 booted up with the blank drive, it formatted it, saw the backup on the external drive and ran the restore.

Awesome, shrike. I already have an external drive with nothing important on it (just some random back-ups), so I'll format it in FAT32. I am certainly leaning towards getting this. I never thought I would need more than the 60GB, because I use my 360 for most of the games and the PS3 for movies and 1st party stuff. But now, with Home coming and a lot of interesting PSN titles in the works, I think the 60GB would be gone in a flash.

I know my 80gig is getting full (too many demos) where do I check the ratio of whats used and whats free, ya know like with windows. Thought I've looked everywhere but must have missed it.

Also, what's a quick/cheap way to transfer everything, games saves, etc. Only have a 2gig SD. Could I do it in batches to the laptop, then transfer it back to the 320gig.??

No I'm not a noob, Thanx in advance though
