Ok, i've got an adrenaline rush going on right now. I can't remember the last time I was this excited over a game find. I was in GameStop today just browsing, and I still can't believe what I found. Sitting amongst the used PS3 games was a copy of the extremley rare Railfan, a Japan exclusive train simulator. I had been wanting this game for quite some time, mainly because it features Chicago. I had to do a double take. There is no way I saw what I thought I did. But I did. And it was marked $19.99.....and as DJ Hero 2. I have no idea why it was listed as DJ Hero 2, but at the time, my mind jumped to the conclusion that somebody, for whatever reason, traded in a copy of DJ Hero 2 in a Railfan case. I went to the counter with the case, and pointed out the DJ Hero 2 label. I asked the clerk if they had the Railfan game. He told me he wasn't sure, but he'd check. He dug through the drawer full of games in paper sleeves and said he didn't find it, but then upon checking a second drawer...there it was. Sitting in a paper sleeve. He brought it up, let me take a look at the disc (pristine condition), rang me up the $19.99 for DJ Hero 2, as that's what the game was marked as, popped the disc in the case and sent me on my way.

I'm still not fully aware that this actually just happened. The game is in absolutley pristine condition and looks like its never been played. It came complete with cover art, manual, a couple of inserts, and these two random cards from some japanese trading card game (I have no idea if these originally came with the game as some sort of promotion or if they belonged to whoever the previous owner was). I couldn't stand the DJ Hero 2 sticker on the case, but I also didn't want any assy residue from trying to peel the sticker off. So when I got home, I swapped the case it came in with the case of my copy of DJ Hero 2. I didn't have any spare cases, and I don't peel off gamestop stickers because i'd rather the sticker be there than the residue, so this made the more sense than having Railfan in a wrongly stickered case.

I am extremley excited about this. I actually took a video as I was leaving the store so I could do somewhat of an unboxing and show the game upclose. Sorry about the black bars on the sides of the video..ive never put an iphone video on youtube before..not sure why it did that.

This is amazing, I actually would like to try that out! Is Gamestop importing finally?

And if this game dosen't have homeless guys brandishing 6 foot metal poles it's not a real Chicago train simulator :p

They took it in as DJ Hero 2 because they wanted it in their inventory ("Never refuse a trade!") but there's no SKU/entry for it. If you trade it in as DJ Hero 2 and sell it as DJ Hero 2, inventory balances out, even if it's not DJ Hero 2.

Nice. I remember that excitement back in the Sega Saturn heyday when I found the Japanese import Dead Or Alive in an Electronics Boutique.
 
Forgot to mention a time when I, too felt that excitement - Valkyrie Profile, mint, on the shelf used for $49.99. Bought that thing with the quickness. (This was a while ago, obviously)
 
It happens. Years ago I found both Lunar games for the PS1, complete, for good prices. Then a used Tomba, also complete (as is with anything I buy there). Rez, Ico, and SotC for PS2. I just came home with a copy of Trinity Universe for free after a coupon they sent.

GS may not offer the best sales but if you take time to look then good things can be found. Had 4 local stores, down to 3 now. One sucks 'cause it's small but the other 2 have a decent selection in a big store.

Can I ask what state u live in? I just found out that a Gamestop just closed down awhile ago.
 
Awesome. I always have dreams that I'll wonder into a gamestop, or a random yard sale, and find tons of rare, complete games for a few dollars... :)
 
I know nothing about the game but great and weird find OP, especially if it does really go for upwards of $150.

One of the cards is definitely Guan Yu; he's a famous Chinese general, and playable in every Dynasty Warriors game. The other kind of looks like Dian Wei (also in Dynasty Warriors), though I know he usually uses an axe in Dynasty Warriors, although that might be different in DW6. I just took a quick look, but the symbols on the corners and stuff look like they might be attributes for some sort of trading card game, so I assume these come from some trading card game in Japan. Either way, I highly doubt they pertain to the actual Railfan game. Hope this helps.
 
I did found a copy of import Dragon Ball GT at GS with a hand written note that said import only back when it was really rare. Also saw Japanese Grandia Extreme.
 
I still remember Cheapy going on about Railfan when he first got a PS3. The only reason I remember is because I always thought the game was kind of interesting but by the time I had gotten a PS3 the price had started to go up for the import.

Personally, my only similar find was Initial D for PSP at a pawn shop for $5 a few years ago. Granted the price of Initial D isn't hardly anything compared to Railfan but its still kind of fun finding foreign games in stores.
 
When you first said Chicago, I was like, the band?

Nice find, the stars were aligned with you on this one. The few things I see online show it for $150 roughly and the high speed Taiwan one a bit less but still pricey.

You do realize that the newer GS stickers don't take forever to peel off and you can eliminate all of the sticky residue by either using the newly peeled off sticker on the residue(sticking and peeling, sticking and peeling) or using a piece of clear packing tape and the same method, right?

Now if you were talking about those old EB Games yellow stickers(the lil square ones), those sumbitches won't even fully come off even if you soaked the entire case in hydrochloric acid.

Good find though. The GS stores by me would never make such an error, as they wouldn't even take my import Demon Souls a while back.

Thanks for the info on the cards. Makes me want to try Dynasty Warriors, i've never played any of those games.

Pretty much. There are a few other Japanese train lines that are playable. I've been learning how to play the game with help from the internet, and I have to say i'm really enjoying myself. I have no idea why they refuse to bring this game stateside, we've seen much more "nice" titles than this. Or maybe do a localized version? Chicago, LA, New York, Philladelphia, Boston. The cities that people have a lot of pride for. I guarentee they would sell, especially if they did region-exclusive cover art for each city.

Yeah, i'm still really excited to have it. It actually is a lot of fun now that i'm learning how to play it.

Yeah, they definitley are easier than they used to be. One problem I seem to have though isn't always the residue. I don't have long nails, but I always seem to make little nail dents when I try to take game stickers off. Between that and the possibility of residue, I've kind of given up lol.
 
Sticker residue can easily be removed with a product called 'GooGone'. A must for used game buyers / Gamestop shoppers.

I've had the same bottle for like 8 years and barely made a dent in it. It lasts forever.

Those yellow stickers are a pain in the butt.

Does anyone know a safe way to remove the sticker on Super Mario Bros All stars limited edition Wii without peeling off part of the art box?
 
and here's where the language gap is hurting lol. anybody know when/where the game wants you to stop the train in the 2nd mission (seems to be a tutorial on when to stop, ironically).
 
Nice find! I never knew they had rail sims for anything but PC. I may have to find this once I get a PS3 again if MS never uncancels MS Train Sim 2.

In the U.S. there is also the rare as hell A-Train, which is an early PSX game.
 
I love this thread. Great story. As much as everyone bitches about GameStop (myself included), it's kind of awesome that something like this can still happen every so often. Congrats on your find, Drclaw!
