Holy crap! What else did I miss?

I don't know if you heard, but we had a little storm down round these here parts. I finally get back to square one, open up the news.. and Lehman is dead, WaMu is wobbling, and BofA swallowed Merrill Lynch.

WTF?

Oil is crashing, but I thought I heard stories of gas hitting $5+ in some places...?

Bush was here this morning, went on a helicopter ride, and left as fast as he came. What a douche that guy is.

What else did I miss? What the hell is going on in the market? What started it? How bad is the rest of the country from Ike? Did it whup up on anywhere else?

Oil is dropping, but the refinery shutdowns in the Gulf drove up wholesale gas prices.
you could just read the threads...
Or better yet, the news.

Everything fine on the east coast.

What would you have him do? Pump water? Turn an electrical turbine by hand for your house? Summon his demonic minions from the 6th level of hell to help folks rebuild?

No, the 6th level demons are made of fire. Insurance won't cover them.

5th level and lower would be adequate.

I realize we're only the 4th biggest city in the United States and by orders of magnitude the most important broker of America's most important resource (and so not very important), but hell man, how bout visiting a POD or something? Our mayor got less than 5 minutes.

I realize it's also a bit late to argue that Bush should act like President Bush and not the dickless, worthless wunderkind that he is, but still, a real leader would do better.
Or better yet, the news.
I don't have cable and all the local stations have been 24/7 hurricane. And you'd be surprised how quickly the story turnover is on the internet. 2 days is old news, ESPECIALLY if it wasn't headline news.
It knocked out power to a few hundred thousand people in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio.

Winds around 70 mph, but only for a few hours.
Yeah, but the fuckers here in Ohio were so unprepared for it that some people will be without power for almost a week. We were lucky and got power back Monday night after not having it for 28 hours, but then at midnight it blacked out again for 12 more hours. Thankfully I was in Seattle for a job interview anyway. Many schools have had school canceled for 3 days due to a lack of power, and it may be 4 tomorrow. And this is including the wealthy suburbs of the city. If this shit happened in New England where I'm from, power would've been back on almost immediately. All it was was 70mph winds, not even any rain. It's a disgrace. Not only did Ohio not have nearly enough crews to begin with, they sent a majority of what they had down to Texas despite weather reports of Ike making its way up here.

Caitlyn's school district is closed for the entire week. I'd say we still have a good 200,000 people without power for the 4th day in a row.

Fortunately, the mayor of Louisville made cleaning Vahalla Golf Course a top priority. We can't delay the Ryder cup.

People are in good spirits, but acting stupid. Some guy on the news spent $64 in gas for his newly bought generator. Kroger kept food in stores without power in order to throw it out instead of shipping to stores with power.

...

I'm looking forward to selling a lot of solar shingles after things clear up. I guess I should ask the company that sells them for a sales position.

My boyfriend's sister is in Louisville. Dunno if she has power yet. Probably the only reason why we even have power now is because we're on the same power grid as one of the most posh hotels in the city (we'd suspected it, but confirmed this when I read a newspaper article that stated their power went on and off at the EXACT SAME TIME as ours). We were extremely lucky that our power only went off for at the most 28 hours at a time (then another 12 a few hours later) and didn't have to throw away any food other than the ones that were going bad anyway. It really kinda pissed me off that we went to Kroger today and they STILL had a sign in front reading, "WE HAVE ICE! :)" According to AEP's website, a lot of non-rural areas around us still won't have power for a few days. What a joke.

1/3 of the county that consists mostly of the state's CAPITAL is still without power. What a joke. Keep in mind the damage is pretty much nothing compared to Texas.

On behalf of the great state of Texas, let me thank all the rest of ya'll for the support you guys sent. I personally ran into crews from California and Ohio the morning after the storm and they were kicking ass for us.

Galveston looks like it was nuked. There are other little islands off the coast of Texas near Galveston that are 100% loss zones. We're gonna be workin on this one for a good long time.

I'm glad they helped you, but they probably should have sent crews from areas that were not going to be in Ike's path at all, like New England, CA (like you reported they did), the Pacific Northwest, etc. Just poor planning on their part IMO.
