Home Theatre in a box suggestions?

Budget? You'll get a much better response more likely if you list what you can afford. Also, whether or not you mind used or refurbished units, as those can bring more expensive systems into the range of some low-end HITB systems.

Forget a home theater in a box. Put a system together with some real speakers, sub and receiver. Go to HH Gregg if you have one or Circuit City if you have to eww, and check out "Klipsch" audio. They make amazing speakers and subs. Go with Onkyo for a receiver. Stay away from Bose. fuck Bose in it's cheaply made, snobbily appealing ass. Bose is marketed towards rich white people that don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to good sound clarity. With Bose you get the "under water" muffled effect from their speakers.

Forgot to add that in the first post. I'm looking for something in the $500 range. I'm not looking for something top of the line. It's for my room, not for the living room. I'm just looking for something that's worth the money. I just don't want to drop $500 on a set up only to find out that it cheaply made and isn't worth $500. I would prefer it to be new as well.

I bought a $200 Sony set at Circuit City couple of years ago, for $180 after coupon. It only has one digital coaxial and one optical audio input (and several analog inputs), so I've had to buy a couple of switches to get around that... For a small room it's plenty, and has decent power and clarity for the price. It'll do Dolby Digital and dts 5.1, and Dolby ProLogic II, but that's all I need in this room. 7.1 would be overkill, and I don't have the budget yet to care about Tru-HD.

I would most assuredly pick up an Onkyo htib if I were you. See if you can go to a local electronics retailer that might have some systems set up, so that you can do some hearing comparisons between different sets. Bring a CD of something you are really familiar with so that you can get an idea of how different sets perform. I think you will find a $500 Onkyo set to sound better than a $1000 set from Sony, etc.

This. A lot of CAGs use Onkyo HTiBs (myself included) and they're great for the price.

You're probably not going for higher end receivers but in-case you change your mind, please stay away from the Onkyo TX-SR806 and 706. There's many problems with blue pixels on the screen, stuttering picture, and more. I know because I just returned my TX-SR806 after 3 weeks of owning it for a Denon AVR-2809CI.

on the cheap I'd buy the insignia bookshelfs from bb and whatever receiver you could afford. Amazon is the place to check for a wide selection between manufacturers.

also there are a lot of people who have problems with onkyos. Specifically with heat. Make sure you're able to exchange whatever you get regardless of brand.

I got an Onkyo and love it. I say go for an Onkyo, Yamaha, or Denon.
If you are buying HTiB you need to buy some Monster Speaker Wires too.

Depending on the size of your room 100 ft should be good.

yeah.......you dont need monster speaker wires and frankly, its stupid to think you do.
you need a certain AWG generally based on how long each speaker run is. its his bedroom so 14-16AWG would be sufficient.

and like every other type of cable, check monoprice.com first.

there are numerous other companies that produce very capable AVR's
Any suggestions from you CAGs out there? I'm looking for a set up for my room. Needless to say it'll be for video gaming and also watching movies.
ONKYO...........ONKYO............ONKYO.........ONKYO
