All of those movies combined are about as frightening as this:

Replace the fingers with penises and you've some real terror, right there.
So true. 50% Dr. Zoidberg, 50% Edward Penishands, 100% horrifying.

Now that I've tasted it, I vow to somehow see Edward Penishands in 2014!

they are hell of a lot better then some of the crap that comes out today as horror
Like anything, you just have to sift through the mountains of dirt to find the gold.

My top 10 list* of more recent horror movies:

28 Weeks Later

ABCs of Death (most insane horror movie since Dead Alive, but be aware they're tiny short films)

Cabin Fever

Cabin In The Woods

Grace (favorite disturbing film that no one's seen, rented it on whim at Movie Gallery)

House of 1000 Corpses

Laid To Rest

Let Me In (or Let The Right One In)

Quarantine 2

Texas Chainsaw (2013 remake, surprisingly amazing story)

*based off of what I own and/or fondly remember viewing.

i like the REC better then the Quaratine movies (though i dont know why they made part 3 into a comedy)

Too bad 28 months later was never made, ONe of these days i need to buy 28 weeks later tired of waiting for it to come back on TMC

Would love for another 28 whatever movie to come out, I enjoyed both of the other two. I also preferred REC over the Quarentine series (After the first 1 anyway). I did enjoy Mama though for what it was worth, though I have not seen much good in the horror genre as of the last few years otherwise.

Oh man you actually liked the 2013 remake of TC. I watched it earlier in the month on Netflix and thought it was bad. It wasn't horrid, but it was a notch below decent.

I have the give the ABC's of Death a try. Im kinda put off from straight to DVD horror movies after VHS (Bored the shit out of me).

I haven't seen ABCs of Death, Laid To Rest, or Quarantine 2. I added them to my "movies to find" list. I've heard really bad things about Texas Chainsaw, but I still bought the bluray for .99 cents at Blockbuster. I'll have to watch it soon.

So much hate for Texas Chainsaw (3D).  Just to make sure this is the right one, it's the one where the girl inherits the house and
Leatherface is still living there.
It had such a different story than all of the other chainsaw movies, and gave a new perspective on the humanity of Leatherface.

I liked Quarantine 2 the most due to it not having the Cloverfield effect of annoying camera movement.

Laid To Rest was my official "oh, they do still know how to make awesome 80's-style horror movies".  I know Hatchet was the popular one to prove it, but I liked Laid To Rest much more. (Hatchet was so over-hyped)

do they make those hatchet movies like that or do they just cut them in half (how part 2 and 3 ended it did not see like it was the entire movie)

Hatchet 1 was pretty good, but I barely sped through 2 and didn't bother with 3.  It sounds like they're just going with endings that scream "wait until next time" on purpose.

Oh, I forgot a more recent gem!

Sinister

It seems to have gotten accidentally wedged in between the massive clump of torture porn and possession-based-on-a-"true"-story junk that's coming out every month.  I know it received good reviews, but it deserved much more recognition for being so unique.
