Marijuanas touted as a miracle drugs, is it any wonder why its illegal? Its obvious pharmeceutical companys would rather poison & make money over anything else.
The prohibition on Marijuana was originally a result of xenophobia (IE those lazy Mexicans and their marijuana are offending our protestent work ethic and threatening the American way of life)
While there is less of a racist component to the marijuana ban that is in effect today, the government has no interest in legalizing another intoxicant (however relatively harmless it may be), and half of the American public buys into the slick "war on drugs" advertising.
The word has become a poison pill for politicians trying to court "family values" voters, due to the overprotective insanity that is rampant among hysterical helicopter moms (you know - the type who hover over their grown children in an attempt to protect them from encoutering real world situations or having an independent thought). It has become so bad that industrial marijuana, which is not smokable, cannot be grown to create high-quality parichute cords, backpacks, etc because it has the "marijuana" plant name (meanwhile we sprinkle poppy seeds over nearly every bread product - seeds which if concentrated and properly filtered in a cup of tea would produce a powerful opiate)
The fact that the American government feels that it has a duty to protect it's citizens from a drug that is no more powerful then alcohol or destructive then tobacco is insulting. Especially because this same government does not protect it's citizens from STDs (refusing to teach students about condoms) or the spread of AIDS (by giving drug users clean needles, an intelligent and compassionate act that even muslim fundamentalist nations such as "axis of evil" Iran are now performing)
