The Renteria signing was brilliant because it frees up our top prospect, a SS, for a trade. Hanley Ramirez was going to be the future long term shortstop, but Renteria is only 28, and you can't get too much better than him. With Hanley Ramirez as the centerpiece of a trade, we should be able to get a very good starting pitcher, either this offseason or around the trade deadline.
A.J. Burnett's name is floating around... Ben Sheets could be a possibility around the trade deadline, Milwaukee will never sign him. It would be nice to screw the Yankees out of Randy Johnson, but how many 40 year olds can you have on the same pitching staff. Arizona doesn't want what we have anyway.
Matt Clement was a good signing but I don't see him as anything more than a #3.
I would rather have Burnett or especially Sheets over RJ anyways. I also think Clement will surprise you. He's no ace, but I think he will be a nice #2 for Boston if given the chance.
I like Clement a lot, but he's one of those pitchers with "control issues". He walks a lot of people. He'll be a very nice #3, but to compete with the Yankees, you need 2 #1's. I like Burnett a lot too, Schilling would be good for him, as would some better coaching, he hasn't had a good pitching coach or good instruction with the Marlins.
I like this rotation:
Schilling
? (future aquisition like Burnett, Sheets, etc)
Clement
Wells
Arroyo
A lot more than this (as of today):
Schilling
Clement
Wells
Arroyo
Halama or Kim
Plus Schilling will miss all of April. We need another starter right away.
hey you forgot someone. Wakefield is in the mix there somewhere too he at least ranks higher than Kim/Halama. he would rather start and i think he is good for the rotation especially back to back with someone who throws hard
Hmm, dunno how I missed Wakefield... Swap out Arroyo and put Wakefield in the top one, because Arroyo will probably be traded if we get Burnett. On the second one, put Wake in front of Arroyo.
I think its because I'm thinking W for Wells that I missed him, weird.
