How come when playing HL2 for a while it freezes?

RiCeBo1

CAGiversary!
These are my specs:

p4 2.5 ghz
1 gig RAM
PNY 6600gt (not sure how much PSU is, but I know it's more than the minimum 300W this card requires)

I know that I can run this game on max, but why does it freeze and crash? Is it because I don't have enough PSU running it? Or is my sound card affecting the game? I have an integrated sound card, thinking about upgrading to a budget one around $25-$30 if someone can find one for me that'd be great. But back to the first question, why is it freezing?

Tech support would be a lot more useful than we are going to be. There are so many things that can go wrong in a computer given 3 components of your computer we aren't going to be able to tell you what is wrong.

Well, I have 2 fans, one that's built in and one that's on the 6600gt. Should I get another?

No I did not steal, I bought it. I just hate dealing with tech support, because it's kind of hard to explain to them what the problem is.

Maybe it's my RAM, because I have one PC2700 and one PC3200 instead of having dual PC3200's...

CS:S works fine, no freezing, but I do notice it slowing down when it's like a 40 players server (no it's not lag, my ping is fine).

I just played HL2 and it didn't freeze at all today, it was rather smooth too :)

1)Does it lock up in anything else
if yes then go to 2
If no then it could a problem with windows,MoBo,CPU,DRAM
2) Find out GPU temp
if x65 idle get better Cooling
3) reinstall drivers with latest version
if it works now then your fine
if not PM me (fixing PCs is my job)

I know about the freezing problem you have because I have gotten it in the demo and now in the retail game as well (just got it today). Sucks that I have not even been able to get to the first in game load and I just installed a new sound card.

I will have to look into the problem later when I don't have to worry about a test

I don't have anything to know what my GPU temp is. Is there a way to check?

bring this up and take a screenshot (take 1 while a game is running too)

For some reason I don't have "Temperature Settings" under my settings...

And no, my video card isn't OCed. I don't even know how to OC it

Unfortunately, this doesn't work for the eVGA 6600GT. They've disabled the temperature monitor and you need to update the bios to re-enable it. Flashing the bios voids your warranty though.

For shure, where ever there is a place to put a fan put one in, the extra 20 bucks for heat disappation in well worth it.
