How do I setup for wireless?

Ok, I'm a total noob when it comes to networking so here is my situation.

I have a DSL modem in my office, on the other side of my house (around 70ft) away from where my 60gb PS3 is going to be in my living room. The modem is wired and going directly into my computer. I really don't want to setup a whole wireless network for one computer and the PS3. Is it possible to just buy a wireless router or something else to send out a wi-fi signal to the PS3, and still have my computer wired to the modem? I'm trying to do things cheaply too, I just spent $500 on the PS3.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

All you would need is a wireless router. Any wireless router will also have several ethernet jacks as well. You could just plug the modem in to the router, the pc in to the router, and then use the ps3 to connect wirelessly. Our router here goes to 2 wired devices and 4 wireless devices.

Edit: With that distance, you may want to look in to a router that uses MIMO technology.
Thanks, that would work out great.

Would I have to change any settings on my PC now that there is a router involved?

Would this router work: Netgear® Wireless-G Broadband Router WGR614NA?

Its only $40 and says it's range is 120ft.
No, nothing on your pc needs to be changed if it's still wired. Also, that router seems fine for what you need. Of course, I'd read up and see how compatible that router is with the PS3. It should work fine, but some routers work better than others. We have a router here that works with everything but it was a bitch and a half to get working with the damn Xbox 360.

I hate having to setup routers to DSL. Some routers are not compatible with certain DSL modems. Last time I setup a Netgear 4port wirless router it went well. You'll most likely, in your noob network situation (no offense), have to call up your DSL provider to help set it up. Its kinda hard for me to explain having to login to your modem and change up the settings and then configure the router.

Good luck, though, it can be done.

the speedstream 4100 and netgear worked. hopefully you'll get a strong signal 70 feet away.

Ok, I think I've narrowed it down to 2 routers

Linksys® Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G $50

Both are on this list of compatible routers for the PS3:

While the Netgear seems to have better reviews the Linksys seems to have a stronger signal. Which one do you think would work best? I remeasured and I have about a 55ft distance and 3 walls inbetween the modem and PS3. And my modem is an old ghetto Fujistsu Speedport that Verizon gave me 3 years ago.

I have the Linksys WRT54GS router, works fine with my PS3, PSP, 2 laptops, all wireless, and 1 desktop and XBox 360 wired. My PS3 is about 70 feet from the router, going through about 3 walls. Signal comes in anywhere from 55% to 90%, never seen it go down below 55%. Oh yea, I added a range booster antenna that I got from Radio Shack for $7 too just in case.

I have that router and for some reason within seconds of turning on my PS3 it disconnects me from the internet on my PS3 and PC. I'm wondering if I need to play with the security settings some or something, but I haven't had my PS3 on wireless since I got the new router.

Cool, sounds like the Linksys WRT54G is the one to get. Thanks for the input.

Now Minos said that the routers can be hard to setup with the modem? Is it going to be tricky to set it up to my dsl modem and wired pc?

Yeah I just picked up a 60gb PS3 and have been having a helluva time connecting to my wireless router. I have a Belkin router which was a pain in the ass to get teh Wii hooked up to and yet the 360 had zero problems. Looks like I just need to do a firmware update on my router and it should take care of my problem from what I have read.

I got my PS3 60gb today. So I ran out and picked up the Linksys for $50. The setup was really easy. I tried the the WPA-TKIP but the PS3 didn't pick anything up so then I did WEP, and after a few hicups, I'm now downloading demos and trailers.

So thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

Hi all,

I have a little problem. My Wi-Fi is too far for my PS3 to reach. When I scan my PS3 it does not pick up any Wi-Fi signals.

Can I get one of these USB adaptors discussed in this thread to extend my range? Will these work?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
