How do you clean your PS3?

If you're confident in your abilities you can open it all the way up and clean the fan out.

When I opened mine to fix it due to YLoD I was surprised how much dust was in there.
I used compressed air for most of it, but cloth on the fan, because it was just that dusty.
Thanks. I think I might open her up.

I had a phat, and I used to take a vacuum to the vents weekly. Occasionally, I would use canned air with it as well.

It YLOD'd last year, and I took it apart for the heat sync. Like Whoknows said, I was REALLY surprised at how much dust was in there.

I cleaned mine with canned air, and when it was too thick to brush off, I used a cloth with a bit of rubbing alcohol.
When you used canned air did you stick it deep inside or more near the outside of the system? What did you use the heatsink for?
I got YLOD- so i had to replace all my thermal paste.

I stuck it in there as far as I could without tilting the can around funny.

i have a compressor and use compressed air. It's a commercial grade 15 gal compressor and I turn it upto 60-80 psi and it works from what I can tell.

I'm afraid to open my PS3 all the way.

Compressed air / office duster found at the store in the can. to have the system refurb is $100, and the last one lasted me from release to last year with this schedule. remove covers, use compressed air on all parts. do not use in the Disk drive though, if there is any moisture, you will make the lens dirty that reads the disks. so, internals only.....

I use an electric leaf blower to dust the inside of my AV cabinet. (I also use the same leaf blower to dry my car) blast all my stuff for about 10 seconds, then I use the vacuum to get all the dust bunnies. I also use the electric leaf blower to dust my ceiling fans lol. Id say I do it about every 3 months.

Would you recommend I replace my thermal paste on my fat ps3 even though I haven't got the YLOD yet? The fan gets loud right when I start playing games and sometimes when I start a game it freezes. I'm wondering if I should replace the thermal paste or just open it up ancd clean it with a compressed air can

^I don't know that I'd recommend taking the whole unit apart unless you really needed to do it. It's your call though. There are a lot of screws, connector cables, etc to keep track of if you take the thing apart.

I should also say that my system died a week later- but I did have time to get all my data and deactivate things.

The thermal paste comes in a little tube. You can get it at radioshack for $10-15 from what I remember. You need to use rubbing alcohal to clean the old off, and once it's dry, place the new one and rub it smooth. There are a lot of guides online to doing it- as it's the primary fix for YLOD.

Well Last night I went out and got compressed air cans and took out out all the dust and it definitely got a lot quieter and I haven't had a problem since last night but thanks for your help though. I really appreciate it

Could also just be your room is warm. I notice that when my room feels hot my ps3 fan is loud.

This could be true also because my room gets really hot when I don't leave my windows open but I did notice cleaning all the dust that was inside my PS3 helped a lot

vacuum cleaner, I put on the attachement with the slim nozzle and clean all the vents. Does pretty good of keeping the unit clean imo.

Besides compressed air to clean it, I take a bit of a preemptive approach in that my entertainment center is constructed of metal shop shelves which are completely adjustable, can hold something like 1,000 pounds safely, and are grated and air-flow friendly as all hell. (there is no enclosed space even when flush with the wall)

Obviously some people won't want them for aesthetic reasons but for keeping things cool and dust-free they are tops. I also arrange my furniture/displays based on window glare so I'm clearly a crazy person.
