How do you keep fit?

I know the common consensus of gamers is lazy slobs who never see the light of day but I know that's not all true..

Just wondering when your not gaming how do you keep fit and in shape?

I skateboard and surf myself, skating about 9 years and surfing only the last few months!

Being primarily a stay home dad with a wife who works WAY too many hours at a firm, I don't get too much time to stay in shape. My one activity that I never miss (unless it is a holiday or we're randomly out of town on a Sunday evening) is Coed Indoor Soccer with a bunch of friends from college (and some other ppl others met in grad school to round out the team).

I work way too many hours at home and due to a back injury, I don't do anything to keep fit. I eat well however, so I'm able to maintain my weight just fine.

If it is a sore subject, feel free not to answer. Why are you a stay home dad if you have a masters (assumption because of Grad School comment)?

To answer OP, I wouldn't say I am fit but I am not that overweight either. I maintain this by running once every two weeks (3 miles), eating in moderation, and I play my RB drums alot. :D

Well actually, the other people on the team (ones we didn't go to college with) are friends of my friends from undergrad that they met in grad school. But I did log a few years in Master's, then PhD program. I just couldn't stand grad school (for bio). Everyone there treated their project like it was the only reason to exist. I love biology, but not enough to spend every day of the week in the lab, to stay every night until past 9.

I kinda fell into teaching in grad school (I taught several undergrad labs). Once I dropped out of grad school, I got a part-time job as a high school teacher/private tutor, mostly to assure myself that I enjoyed teaching. It's during this period that my wife got pregnant (we were trying), and since her lawyerly salary pays our mortgage, I stayed with the part-time teaching (usually 2 afternoons a week) and stay home with our son.

Yea, alot of info, but doing the stay home parent thing is alot of fun. Both my wife and I didn't like the idea of putting our son in full time care when he was just born. We have a very nice neighbor who runs a day care out of her home (has a couple other kids from the neighborhood in there too). But we didn't want him in full time care; we wanted him to have one parent to hang with.

As it is, if he doesn't get a sibling soon, as he gets closer to going to school, I'll get closer to going full time teaching.

I tried running before kept it up for a few weeks but then got bored.. Maybe its cause I was doing it 2 - 3 times a week and tiring myself out.

Yeah I wouldn't say i'm fit myself either but i'm defiantly not unfit.

My diet could probably be better.. I eat a lot of good stuff and drink a lot of water but that goes the same for junk food! Surprisingly I really eat crap when im gaming haha

The eating while watching tv/playing games/on computer is almost non-existent now. I found that it helps that anytime I want to eat I sit at the dinner table or go out to eat. You will find out by doing this that you will notice you were never hungry to begin with.

I'm on my 2nd cycle of P90X with P90X+ classes (week 5, just over 4 months straight) and I throw in an Insanity Cardio workout in the morning before work, P90X/X+ at night. Also have a physical job lifting/moving all day, as well as martial arts and blacksmithing on the side- i also eat really "clean" (no fast foods, junk food ect ect) i snack while gaming- but It's almonds only, keep a can on the desk, none salted, all natural.

Manual labor for work, full-body weight training sessions 2-3 days per week, boxing three days, occasional hill sprints, pick-up basketball a few times per week, swimming in the summer, and of course a healthy, well-balanced diet. I have found that the key to keeping exercise interesting is not to sink into too much of a set routine, and don't be afraid to use unconventional stuff as a workout (tire flips, throwing boxes around in a warehouse, etc.).

breakdancing and weapons practice (nunchakus). I would do more but shit, it's literally 100 degrees over here at the moment.

I wanted to get into P90X but never did...I will start it eventually. Seems cool and I have it.

I've been doing P90X. If I skip a day of that, I do x amount of pushups, situps, squats, toe raises, lifts, and crunches.

I drink a cup of water upon waking and when I'm going to sleep. I avoid eating past 8 pm. I stay away from sugary drinks unless it's the weekend/special occasion or juice in the morning. I've been jogging/walking about a couple of miles 5 days a week with an abdominal set routine afterward.

I lift consistently five days a week and cardio six days a week. I just started on cardio this month to lose the last bit of body fat til I reach my goal. I try to eat as clean as possible, get in at least 2000-2200 cals a day and half gram protein per pound of lean body weight.

I've been consuming this much protein ever since I started over a year ago and have been adding muscle mass just fine and I'm maintaining it well while trying to lose body fat, may even gain a slight bit too. No specific routine or anything but I change things up every once in a while and experiment quite often. If you check out my pics you can see a photo of me from 2007 and 2008 when I was at my heaviest and when I just started to lose weight.

I work out at the gym 3 times a week (I lift and Cardio). Also I ride my bike all the time. I have gain some tone but my belly is still pretty big. I believe its the fact I eat a lot of bread may have something to do with it. Its tough to give up.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park farther away from your work. Get up and walk around during your breaks. It might not seem like much but every little bit helps.

I go to the gym 4 days a week. 20 minutes on the treadmill to warm up, then I do 30 crunches(on a weight of 20lbs), some pull-ups, weight machines, shrugs, more pull-ups, more crunches, then 5 minutes of elliptical and that is it. I haven't been eating fast food or soda for awhile now and I only drink a single cup of coffee Monday-Friday.

Hey I've actually lost weight eating McDonalds, you can exploit almost anything in such a way and use it to your advantage. I prefer not to eat it all the time though, hate the feeling of all that grease in my throat and body.

Well diet wise the key is to eat less calories than you burn a day. So you can still eat garbage and do that. It just makes it harder because:

1. It's lots of calories and little nutritional value. So I feel hungry faster eating that kind of junk.

2. It's high in fat and saturated fats, and the body stores those as bodyfat more easily than it does the same amount of calories from clean foods low in fat. Extra protein and complex carbs will get stored as fat too if you eat too many calories a day, but not as readily as fat does.

Bread is a tough one to quit, for me it's pasta. I'm not a big believer in the whole "carbs" thing, but they're a caloric minefield. I have some low-cal bread that's 40 calories a slice whereas regular white bread can be upwards of 100. It's fairly dry so I toast it, but, I mean, it's still bread.

A thousand times yes. I feel if more people knew that nobody would fail at diets. I always hear people say "yeah, but I like junk food." Everyone does, just eat less of it. You don't have to eliminate it at all if you don't want, but, eventually, I think you automatically condition yourself to make better choices over time. It gets to the point where you go "well, I can have this handful of chips or this giant pile of fruits and vegetables and be stuffed." The best weight-loss tip in history: Get a food scale. I went from a 44 pants to a 32 that way. I even went from a 12 to a 10 shoe, imagine that.

One of my favorite things is throwing some fruit into the blender with some diet lemon/lime soda and ice and then freezing it. It feels like a dessert but it's just healthy fruit. As a bonus, Kool-Aid has no calories and if you pour a packet of it in, it's like concentrated flavoring, and the watermelon is amazing. You can eat an entire pitcher of the stuff for less calories than one can of soda. I highly recommend strawberries, bananas, and if you've got room for another 180-190 calories, a serving of peanut butter.

Outside of that, I bike a lot in the summer. We have a bike trail that's about 98% countryside and woods and farms with gnarly cows, put me out there with some Queens of the Stone Age or Volbeat on the iPod and I'm a happy camper. I have a weight bench for when I don't bike, I have no idea how much is on it but it's been doing me well for a long time. Then I'll do 100-or-so crunches and maybe some curls or squats, if even that much. You don't need to do a lot of muscle. I had a treadmill but I burned it out and I really miss it, I need to get another one before the winter.

Another thing I need to do this winter is not gain 50 pounds eating pie. :(

Actually it's good to eat plenty of good fats too if one desires to drop their body fat %, especially if you only have that last few to lose. But yes I choose to eat healthier due to the simple fact that it's healthier and I want to get into a habit of eating healthy right now so I continue to do so as I grow older.

But I guess there's a million combination to getting and staying in shape and that's the way I like it :).

i lift weights and ride my bike. i run occasionally, but i hate running (boring), so i don't do it too much. i eat healthy and i'm a vegetarian. don't smoke. don't drink too often. i play games on a balance ball. don't know if that helps, but it definitely keeps my ass from hurting. :p

I'm 24. I've watched myself slowly (but surely) put on pounds for the last couple years. I actually still look pretty good (especially arms and upper chest); but a gut is slowly starting to cover my once six-pack abs.

I do need to get back to working out, but, I have a hard time getting myself to do it. I work my eight hours a day, come home to be with my girlfriend, eat/watch some TV/do some activity with her, and then we go to bed. It's really hard to break the cycle once it happens.

One day I'm gonna wake up looking like a lot of middle-aged guys do (though I'm nowhere near middle age yet) if I don't shape up. I need my damn motivation back.

DUDE, this is me to a tee, (except i dont have a g/f!) I'm 24 too, and while I am not overweight, i have put on a few pounds after college. Still about 6 foot 1, 190 lbs. not very much muscles but looking at me you would think im somewhat fit!

Im about to start grad school and need to get fit.. gotta get motivated, you're so right that you get in that cycle, and for me, unless I was obese, or even unsightly (per my own standards) would do something about it

BUT, when youre a pretty good lookin' cat with a little pudge its hard to get goin! haha. its good to hear from someone else who doesnt do a whole lot. Besides I eat out like twice a day, not good either (hate grocery stores and cooking!) but most of the time its like subway, or something like that. some BBQ.

nonetheless good thread, im glad to hear from you guys, big and small, short and tall!

I work my 8 hours and go straight to the gym. If I go home and relax then I am done for the day. Just how my body works maybe it could work for you too.

Yeah, I think that'd be my only chance. And, in the past, that *is* when I got my workouts in. Maybe I'll reactivate my gym membership...

Aside from my regular job, I teach Group X classes like Turbo Kick Boxing, Everlast Shadow Box, Hip Hop, and Salsa at 24 Hour Fitness. It's very motivational, especially since 99% of the class members are female! I usually show up an hour before class for weights so that I can get a good balance of weight training and cardio. Last but not least, this part-time job/hobby helps pay for CAG deals!
