How do you play the Parappa games!?

Okay, here's the thing. I found a copy of Parappa 2 for really cheap, so I picked it up and enjoyed it to death. I went and bought a copy of um jammer lammy not too long ago, and figured I would play through that before I buy the original parappa. I try and try again, but I cannot get ANYWHERE in lammy! I can't even make it through the first level. The thing that's bothing me is that I feel like I'm hitting the notes at the right time(right when the marker passes over the button to press), but I still keep losing. I didn't have this problem with parappa 2(although it seemed like alot of times I was hitting notes succesfully but hitting them slightly after the marker passes over the button), but I remember coming across the same problem with the original parappal(although I was able to get alot farther than I can here). I was wondering if anyone can offer advice on how to play this game? I thought it was a simple matter of hitting the correct button in time with the marker, but all of the guides online keep saying to "just follow the beat". Is it simply a matter of me sucking, or am I not playing the game correctly?

You just gotta believe!

You kind of have to improv. But you need to hit the notes that come on their beats.

Are you playing on a ps3/hd screen?

Some music/rhythm games don't do well on newer tech. Bust-A-Groove is one, theres some big delay between the visible button presses and when the game actually wants you to press it -_-

if you just try to follow the beats roch band/guitar hero style, you will probably fail since this game is hardcore.

timing needs to be EXTREMELY PRECISE.

what the game wants you to do is improv the beat, and when you improv in a manner that works with the beat, you get rewarded 10 fold. How to improv exactly is tricky. In fact, ive seen FAQs over on gamefaqs that really have no documented way to improv. your best bet is to watch videos. But really, you just got to feel the song, and work with it.

you got to BELIEVE!

Hmm, that could be one of the problems. Since writing the post, I've been able to get rather far into the game... the first level took MANY attempts, but the following level was completed after 2 attempts, and the next two were both completed on the first try(I stopped playing after the plane level for the time being)... I've managed to improv a few lines in the levels too. I'm succeeding, but only because I'm pushing the buttons before they hit their targets, which just doesn't feel right, so perhaps it has to due with the PS3/HD issue.

by the way, that level with the rabbit parade and giant catapillar that pukes up... cotton candy or something? that was some weird shit.

HD lag is huge and makes playing rhythm games extremely difficult. That's why every GH/RB game since GH II have A/V calibration settings. For older games the best way to play is with an old CRT.

BAH just the mention of the game makes me want to play it. I played the demo of the first one to death back in 95' when i got my Ps1. Few years later, won 2 copies of the second for the Ps2 in an Eat n Earn competition for cereal box labels :D
Oh man, I am trying to get Parappa and Um Jammer Lammy, I hope they aren't hella-hard haha.
I was able to beat Parappa on PSP on Normal, and got about half way on Hard. Needless to say, I can't pass the first level of Um Jammer. :(
