How does Torrent work?

XboxMaster

CAGiversary!
Hey, I'm looking to download some Naruto episodes and probably some other anime stuff and supposedly Torrent is the place to go for that. How exactly does Torrent work?

Download the Torrent program. You won't have to install it. Then, click on a Torrent link and watch your download begin. It's really simple.

It uploads so other as you download so it often can hog a bunch of your bandwidth so make sure to kill it when you've got the items.

Oh and Naruto rocks!!!

Ill give you a general overview.

A torrent is a type of file that hooks you into a network with a Bittorrent client. Once you download and open the Torrent (Its usually automatic), you start connecting to people that have the file and those that are still downloading it.

From there, its all sharing. (For example) The client downloads part 4/100 of the file. Then it starts to share Part 4 when its finished to someone else, while downloading Part 73 from a user with 60% complete, along with Part 98 from a user that has the whole file.

Its like one giant mesh. But how fast downloads go depends solely on your upload speed. More upload = More Download. Rather good idea, if I must say so myself.

Anyways, thats how it works. Finding the torrents is up to you though.

That too. Find a client that lets you limit your upload speed. Otherwise you wont be able to do much of anything internet-wise besides use AIM because it'll be using all of your bandwidth.

Use BitTornado it works well for me... can lower the upload rate so you can download faster
Go to Suprnova.org for torrents, they rock! no upload requirement either.
Just how dangerous is this? To your computer and from a legal standpoint?
No exploits that I know of yet and it's perfectly legal on your own computer. What you download is where legality comes in.

1024 MB, I thought.
the prfix maga means a million and giga means a billion there are 1000mb in a gig, but when you buy like a 20 gig hard drive its actualy 20X1024 correct me if im wronh

Let's all do it, so nobody can download anything!

Torrents have been under fire lately for people downloading movies and whatnot, but I seriously, seriously doubt that anyone will prosecute anyone downloading Naruto episodes. I've used torrents for months and months to download old TV shows.. full seasons of Pete and Pete, Boy Meets World.. Wonder Years.. and yesterday and today, X-Men The Animated Series Season 1 and 2, season 3 will be done in a few hours! Yay! I loved this cartoon.. can't wait until if/when it comes out on DVD!

Any links for the X-Men show?

Exchange of such things are frowned upon on this board. Google can probably help you out, though.

1000 mb = 1 gb

25 minute episodes tend to be about 175 mb each
1024
Yeah, I rounded 8) Sorry!

That is how it SHOULD be, but that isn't the way it is. Hard drive manufacturers see 1 giga byte = 1,000,000,000 bytes instead of the 1 gigabyte = 1,073,741,824 bytes so in reality a 20gig hard drive is more like 18 or so actual gigabytes.

It really depends on how many seeds/users there are. If there are a ton of seeds it should pick up right quick and go quick all the way to the end, if there are only a few, it could take hours for even the smallest things. It also supposedly matters how much you upload but that never seems to apply when i am downloading.

Haha, forget Bit Torrent. Just hop onto irc.rizon.net and join #anbudom. Download speeds are always fast (usually a little slower if an ep was just released because then the bots really get hit hard) and you don't have to upload anything to anyone.

Animesuki.com should be your first stop after downloading your torrent client.
Mirkx.com should be your next stop.
Your third stop should be boxtorrent.com (or is it boxtorrents.com? It's one of those for sure)
Your last place to check is suprnova.org (but this one has stuff other than naruto - which incidentally is up to episode 103 as of this writing

www.baka-updates.com ? much better than suprnova....

Meh, baka-updates is the same as mirkx.com for me... except w/o the extraneous pictures - i just go to those sites for torrents anyway

Nope, still eluding the major subbers: AonE, ANBU, AH and S-O... dunno if any of the speed subbers might have gotten it... maybe the hawks group?

Can I voice Sakura? Wait... I'm not a girl, but I can get my voice up really high!
I'd be scared since the ppl in this forum are all insane!
I've no idea what you are talking about

CAG dubbing Naruto is what I'd be scared of... no doubt the translation would be more than hilarious since everyone would ad lib the lines instead of saying what is supposed to be said

Ah! I see. I guess I'll search for it on my own.

Use Azureus, its definitely a solid, friendly client. Also, since I'm assuming you are downloading the Japanese series, my friend claims there are no legal problems involved until it comes over here officially. BT ROCKS!
Does the downloading process usually go slow at first? I'm trying to download something, and it's going quite slow.
Yeah, it usually starts slow, cuz you need to connect ot peers and seeds, but also, don't forget to forward your ports on any firewall you have going.

The copyright still belongs to someone. Just because it's not marketted over here yet doesn't make it fine to download. That's not to say I won't watch new series via download, but it's not legal, really.

My friend claims there are no legal problems involved with mugging people in total darkness.

I don't see anything wrong with downloading things not yet available in the US market, it being my assumption that anyone here would (and will) buy the content in question if (or when) it gets a stateside release.

Argh, should a download go this slow? I have a movie that's been going at like 3 KiB/s for like 10 hours, and it's only at 67 percent. Arrrgh.

What kind of connection are you on? Are there a ton of leechers and few seeders?

I'm on a bb connection. I don't know, how can I tell if people are leeching?
