How I stole a copy of Valkyrie Profile from a poor bastard (very sad story)

I checked store availability online, and it said that there was a copy available at a GS about 10 miles away. I go there and ask if they had the game. The manager told me that another guy already called in and reserved it this morning and was coming tonight to get it. He kept telling me that he couldn't sell it to me, but I wouldn't give in. After about 10 minutes of my nonstop pleading, I guess he just kind of got fed up, he was like, "Fine, take it! But the other guy is gonna be seriously pissed off at me." I kinda feel bad, but I'll get over it since I've been dying to play this game.

BTW, some dumbass must of traded in a bunch of good PS1 RPGs because of the trade 4 get 40% deal. I also saw

Tales of Destiny: 24.99
Thousand Arms: 24.99
Suikoden I: 27.99
Threads of Fate: 9.99

This store is located in Lakewood, Ca (on Paramount) for anyone interested.


I picked up VP (39.99) and Legend of Mana (24.99), both complete and practically new for about $65 total after 10% discount. Not cheap but definitely still worth it.

I don't know how other people feel about this, but I don't really think it's fair that you annoyed the manager until he sold it. What if that guy who had it set away had to drive really far to get it?

Actually, that's pretty crappy. Had you called and reserved it yourself, great. But now you've ruined someone else's day. So to clear your conscience, you should send it to me.
 
I'm surprised he even sold it too you. Most of the GS around me don't ever sell rare games even if they have them. They always end up saying a disk is missing or what not.

Before you judge me, ask yourself what you would've done if you were in my shoes. I've been wanting this game for like a year now and I have checked GS.com for store availability on a regular basis. Finally, there is one in stock, and I go to get it, but I find out some guy reserved it and I can't buy it? What do you expect me to do? Just say oh well, maybe next time when there might never be a next time?

i agree with a first come first serve mentality.. the guy just called and "reserved it" i mean its not like he paid a pre order for it or put money down for them to reserve it. i think its fair if a customer comes up and offers to buy it it should sell.. i'd do the same thing.

What if the other guy has been waiting for 2 years? I understand why you did it, I just don't agree with it.

Granted, he could've been some douchebag who was going to buy it and sell it on ebay for profit.

All you can do now is play the shit out of it and enjoy it.
 
This story isn't really funny, it's more like you being a whiner to get your way. I would have told you no and would have told you to wait. Holds are for 24-48 hours. If you can't wait, then too bad.

Good job at ruining someone elses day.

this is definitely the manager's fault. sausageman doesn't have any responsibility to the other customer. the manager should have stuck to his guns if he was holding the game for someone else. my feeling is the manager was holding the game either for himself or for another employee which is why he was willing to cave. normally i seriously doubt any manager would do that at the risk of pissing off another customer. even if the guy didn't show up later that night, it's not like they'd have any trouble getting rid of the game.

That's what I'm saying. I was waiting for CvS 2 EO for a long time. I saw a copy at Walmart for $30 but I held off on that one. About 5 days later, what do I find? CvS 2 for $24.88. It's all about how long you can wait. I'm sure if I waited longer I could've gotten it for $20 or less.

Put yourself in the other guys shoes for a minute. He might have been looking for that game longer than you have. Now he will get to the store and the manager will probably lie to him and he will be screwed. Now how would you feel if that was you who got screwed?

I don't blame you as much as I blame the manager though. I would have told you no once and if you continued to bother me I would have had you escorted out of the store.

Just a random thought...

I've had this happen to me before; a game that I reserved being sold. Let's just say that I usually got really pissed at the underpaid workers and yelled at them (bad bad me and my temper since I'm one of those underpaid workers). I feel sorry for the manager if he gets yelled at for this...

I'd not be a total cunt about it and would wait until it came in again. What would you have done if you were in the other guy's shoes and you'd been wanting this game and you get to the store and the manager says some jerk came in and bugged him until he gave it to you?

Only had that happen once, I bought persona 1 and 2 and when I got to persona 2 a disk was missing. The guy took my number and said he'd call if he found it (said some ps1 stuff was in a box and they were rearranging it or something). Well, they never called, I went back there the day before I left to go back to canada (about a week or two later) for 3 months and asked them about it when buying a few games, guy said they hadn't found it. I leave the store and 10 minutes later my father calls me and tells me gamestop just called and they found the disc, so I rushed back over and bought it (I was at the mall down the street, and I had to go back by it anyway so I wasn't going out of the way.) The area was about an hour from my house so it's not like anyone else could have got it had I left for canada.

Let's see, if you hadn't sat there whining like a 2 year old who didn't get his lollipop then manager (who still is a jerk for letting you have it) wouldn't have given it to you and the other guy wouldn't have had to waste the gas money and the drive to get it (I drove an hour to get a suikoden 2 once, so in that case I woulda been out 15 bucks and at least 2 hours of driving cause some dumbass didn't understand what reserved meant). See, I know I'm considered a very strange person sometimes, but when I think somethings wrong I don't do it. I can see if the guy said "someone reserved it, but they haven't showed up for for 3 hours so you can have it", but I wouldn't sit there arguing about how I am entitled to a game when I've already been told another customer called to reserve it and they are holding it for him/her. I can see if the manager offered it to you, but to whine "I want my wowipop! I want my wowipop!" is pathetic. You showed total disregard for the other person who had it reserved.

That's not the way it happened buddy. I basically reasoned with him, telling him that there was no guarantee that this guy will actually come. That was the case since he called in the morning and still wasn't there at 6:30 PM. I was already there with cash in hand. And plus, I'm pretty much a regular customer there, so he didn't want to piss me off either. He made a tough decision, not neccessarily a wrong one (at least from a business stand point).

The world ain't fair people. Yes if that guy came later and found out his game was gone, he would be pissed just like I would be. Unfair shit happens to all of us. In my opinion, if I would have given up and just left, I would have totally regreted it.

And its not like I feel sorry this guy. He might not even have come; his motives might have been to just make a profit on ebay; or hell, he might not even have existed. I just couldn't let this opportunity pass. I bought this game fair and square, and I have the receipt to prove it.

I don't think it's the "paying $50 more" part, but more of the "I bothered the manager long enough to take the hold off of a game" part. There's nothing cool about that, even if it was for a game you waited *gasp* a whole year for! Lord knows that people rarely wait years and years for a game!

That is thing that orignally caught my attention. But all of my friends who like rpgs tell me this is one of the best role playing experiences of all time. That's the main reason I've been dying to get it.
 
Hopefully that is the case. If you just throw it in a cabinet and let it rot, you truly are a whiny jerk. If you play the game and give someone a good deal when you decide to rid yourself of it, then you've just taken advantage of a lucky situation.

Pfft. It's a gamestop and an ass-rare game. It was probably on employee hold, perhaps for the manager himself. Few managers are going to risk pissing off a customer they have a verbal agreement with. If he did, well, it's his store, and he's the one violating Gamestop rules if they do exist. Of course, if they do they're not going to be phrased as "24-48 hours", which is just another way of saying, "We don't know what our policy is." For the record, if I call a store to hold a game, and no money has traded hands, I usually get an hour to make it. Which is fair; they don't owe me the favor.

On the other hand there are no rules for a customer other than thou shalt not steal, the pants requirement, and refraining from less common, yet equally reprehensible felonies and misdemeanors. He obeyed those. And he plugged a gamestop where the customers get a chance at rare games, like they make it to the shelf and everything. If I believed faith in humanity were possible, it would be restored. Enjoy the game.

The bottom line is, I lucked out and got a rare game and some other guy was unlucky and missed out. That's it! I didn't lie, cheat, or steal to get it.

All the little kiddies saying I somehow cheated the other guy haven't seen anything it. Wait until you get out to the real world you little brats.

Usually, it's the little kids who steal and do other underhanded things, the adult thing would be to say "hey, someone else has it reserved, guess I'm out of luck" just like you do when finding a parking spot "hey, someone else signalled for that spot first, guess I'll keep looking". Besides, adults tend not to have hissy fits on message boards and whine about how everyone is a little kid cause they don't take whatever they can get.

Alright I admit it, I'm a bad person. I steal and always do "underhanded" things. In fact, tomorrow I'm going to call every Gamestop within a 20 mile radius to see if there are any rare games that are reserved. If so, I'm gonna get there and buy them first.

duh, i would have done the same thing. if the manager was really holding it for someone other than an employee then he wouldnt have given it to someone else because thats bad business. i mean i wouldnt have broke down in fake tears trying to get it but jeez guys you are overreacting slightly. if anyone is to blame its the manager who sold the game to him. its called taking advantage of an opportunity. its not like he hoarded 5 copies from the same store and then stood outside trying to sell them for 2x as much.

And if the reserve isnt in writing then it aint reserved.
