How long before YLOD?

Hi All,

I read somewhere in Europe there was an outcry that most PS3 died a few months outside their 1-year warranty. This was a while back before the introduction of the slims.

Just wondering how everyone's experience has been and whether extended warranty is worth it or not. Please post whether yours was pre-slim or not.

Also, post your story if you had a general non-YLOD failure of your PS3. Thx.

Had my PS3 for exactly 3 years now (this month) but it has been hanging up lately o_O. but w/e, not bothering me at all compared to the problems I've gone against the Xbox 360 ones =_:speaktothehand:;

id say take a look at the repair videos and judge for yourself if you can do it or not. to me its not and with all the recent posts about ps3s dying i think alot of people who have consoles of the phat variety should take preventitive steps to keep their systems healthy.

in light of everything it makes me wonder if this gen of consoles was really made to last or if they were built with long gaming sessions in mind. they also need to allow ps3 owners the ability to swap out harddrives without them getting formatted especially since some saves cant be trasnferred to a harddrive.

voted between 2-3 but I read it as how many years have you had your ps3 and not gotten the yellow light. Mine hasn't gotten it yet.

My PS3 will be 3 years old in a couple more months. I had it fail within a month of owning it but not a problem since. My brother's PS3 is two years old now and it has never needed repairs. All the YLOD talk has me a bit worry though since I own a 60gb unit with a ton of Singstar songs on different profiles and those will be a pain to recover if it does get the yellow light.

no ylod but i killed 2 lasers on my MGSBC80gig on the 3rd now and my slims laser is about to go as well
these things are truly not built for marathon gaming

I have the same concern. I'm hearing more and more PS3 failure stories. I'm just trying to get an idea of the reality of these machines and whether getting extra warranty is worth the hassle.

As for marathon gaming, how many hours are we talking about here? And is it everyday usage?

It would be nice to know what the baseline usage limits are with these consoles.. sorta like LCD / plasma tv's expected lifetime hours. I guess if they last 3 years, that's pretty decent. Anything less should be improved upon.

Thx.

Yup...Consoles are typically built for the exact opposite. For a longer life span for a console it's best to use them in short sessions of on and off gaming with time for them to cool. Seriously no PC runs as hot as a PS3 does during it's duration of operation and in such a tiny enclosure. It's amazing these PS3s and 360s don't overheat often. Even the most rigorous of gaming sessions on a gaming PC won't do dick to the life of that computer since they have a ton of cooling features.

In any case from my experience with PCs and laptops is that its just best to leave them on once running for as long as possible. Every laptop or PC I've had that I'd turn off and on with each use has been toasted within a year maybe a year and half of use. Consoles should be turned off after being used (not run all day and night) and they should be given some cooling time.

I've used all my consoles this way since I was little and they all still work (seriously decades back).

In any case (knock on wood) I've had my PS3 since early 07 with little to no problems. I personally think those that are getting a lot of problems with their PS3s run them 24/7 or play for hours at a time without leaving the house/doing something else. If you play your PS3 2-5 hours a time with a cool down then it should last a good deal.

I've never had a problem with a sony made playstation. My launch model PS2 still works pretty good (it runs PS2 games fine, but screws up with DVDs). Not bad for a system I've abused on since 2000 or so.

Also if your hearing about PS3s breaking down after 3-4 years then thats within the normal parameters of electronic defects. Seriously very few electronics are built to last beyond the 5 year mark. Things break, dust becomes an issue, fans wear down, ect.

My fan was starting to get loud, so I pre-emptively added some high end thermal paste to GPU and CPU. When I did that I noticed the beginning of heat scoring around edges of old paste. Since doing it, fan runs whisper quiet, just like when I bought it.

got it first year it was released. All of my games other than FF13 have polygon disfugurement meaning it looks like Snot is coming out of their faces.

Good to hear. And thanks all for all the feed back. So far, the poll seems to indicate a very tiny failure rate. I still have my PS2 (the bulky one) and it's still kicking. I'm hoping the same for the PS3. At least give me 3-4 years of gaming for that price.

I've had my PS3 since December 2006 and it's still going, but it also doesn't get nearly as much use as my other systems either. Don't know how much that plays into it.

I said 3 years because mine just the the YLoD last week.
Now im bored out my mine.
Ive played all my DS games and my iPod is a lil boring these days.
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Bzzzzz. WRONG!! I had my last SDtv since the early 90's and it just croaked about 2-3 years ago. I had it for SEVENTEEN YEARS before it started messing up on me.

To me, people who just shrug their shoulders and say 'that's the expected lifespan of one of these' without holding these megaconglomerates to task for making shoddy electronics that fail within 5 years need to have their heads checked. Either that or they like wasting money replacing the same things over and over and over. I don't.:bomb:

I had the same original Playstation for 7-8 years and it worked like the day I bought it when I finally sold it off. The PS2....eh....not so much. The PS3 is wayyyy too complicated of a piece of tech and as one knows when there's alot of moving parts, one or more is bound to break down eventually.

i feel your pain man when mine died i went back to using my old ps2 alot of those games were very hard to play because of shitty camera controls.

I've had mine for 2 years, have had ZERO problems with it thus far. It's a 40GB phatty. I've also never had any problems with any Sony system except for the usual blue disc/CD-ROM issue with my launch PS2. But even then turning it upside down makes the games work after a try or two.
