10-15 hours on weekends. Per day.
Though it depends on if I have anything to do, of course. Last weekend I had a ton of errands to take care of, so I only managed a few hours total.
This weekend, I have nothing to do! My girlfriend and I hang out at her parents lots of weekends: my girlfriend watches tv/movies, bakes, paints, and does her other hobbies, and I sit on my ass and game. So relaxing for both of us after a long week of work.
On week nights, I don't generally have a ton of time to game. Maybe an hour or two a night.
Get an LCD game screen. I noticed that my girlfriend would complain/demand attention when I didn't sit with her to watch her TV shows and would be in the computer room. With my LCD game screen I can sit with her and play a game while she watches her tv shows.
The key is to know when to put down the controller. If your friends and family are telling you that you're gaming too much, maybe it's time to take a look at what they see. I gamed a ton when I was young, right up into college. At that point, you'll have to change your priorities to get the things you want. It's easy to game 5+ hours a day when all you have to worry about is keeping up your grades, but try doing it with a full time job, a girlfriend, friends, and family.
On the other hand, gaming is a hobby, no different than any hobby your friends and family have. Maybe they don't understand that; It's slowly being more accepted as a valid and adult thing to do, but there is still a lot of negative stereotype surrounding it.
