how long does the pS2 memory card saves last.

i ask this cause i was able to trade for ARC the lad for ps1 and a few other RPGS for the ps1 at gamecrazy. I have 7 ps1 memory cards. i put in the first 5 and everyone of them said NO DATA FOUND. I pop in my 6 and it works and i have a 7th non sony card brand new i just open (I got it like 5 years ago but never open

Im wondering if the PS1 cards can go bad in less then 5 years how long will the ps2 memory cards start Saying NO DATA FOUND

what is werid is i had to FORMAT one of the sony ps1 memory cards before it would work and same with the non sony brand. this sort of pisses me off cause i know i had tons of RPG SAVES ON those PS1 memory cards that are now saying
NO DATA FOUND..

any help or are the cards just junk
 
Are they 3rd party cards? I've never had any of my first party cards lose data, and I have saved games from 7-8 years ago on one of them.
 
all 6 are Sony brand memory cards the 7th i opened last night is 3rd party.

5 of the 6 sony cards all are saying NO DATA FOUND like the card is dead

the other sony card worked and the non sony card worked after i had to format it since it was never used before. same one of the SONY cards had FF 7 save that was at the end of the game another had FF 8 and 9 Saves of almost complete games
 
I would guess poor storage of one method or another. I also have memory cards from the early days of the PS1 that are fine and dandy to this day.
 
i called a local video game store and they said this is somewhat common. a basic memory card will hold its saves for 5-7 years before dying dont know if true or not
 
As I said, I have saved games from 7-8 years ago. They are on the first memory card I ever bought, which was back when the PSX was first released.
 
I still use my memory card for the PSX days as well. That's what you get for buying the memory card with Lara Croft on it.

okay this is even MORE WERID. i hooked up my old ps1 system and the cards work. So it might be a problem with ps2 systems reading ps1 memory cards


EDIT:::: might found the problem . I was looking at the card again and i see that the one that is working in the ps2 is a sony card since they all looked the same i could of swear they was all sony cards but there is only one PS Logo on one of the cards so that is probally the reason. Then again i got a 3rd party i just open and it works WERID

EDIT 2: Called eb and they said ALL NON SONY memory cards will not work in a ps2. only offical PS1 cards will work in the PS2 system so that is why... Now to go buy some cards or find room to have my ps1 hooked up (eb sells used PS1 Offical cards for 2.99 so might go that route)
 
Yeah, always check for the Playstation logo on a memory card, 3rd party cards ar the bane of game saves throughout the universe. Memory cards use flash memory and thus should technically hold their saves FOREVER unless they are badly sotred or come in contact with a high level of static which can harm most electroning storage mediums.

While 3rd party cards are often made from substandard materials and/or not made to the neccesary specs to be completly compatable with the technology and can loose data just by looking at them funny.

Well, to be perfectly pedantic, technically, they won't hold their saves forvever. Even though Flash memory is "static," there are still leakage currents, thermal diffusion, etc. So in reality, it wouldn't be surprising to find a memory card failing after 10-15 years, just due to simple physics.

But you are right about the 3rd party cards. I've had one fail after a day. Stay far the hell away from 3rd part cards.

That's a dirty, dirty lie. I have 4 3rd-party PS1 cards, and they ALL work just fine on a PS2.
 
I have the PStwo and it will only read first-party PSone cards. On the other hand, my brother's PS2 has no problem reading third-party PSone cards.
 
i have a slim ps2 and a 3rd party ps1 card that reads just fine. however, I also picked up an 8mb memory expansion thing made by pelican or intec that wouldn't work. it was only $3 though, no big loss.
 
Memory cards are a weird, fickle thing, with many lil' things that can happen to them to make them not work- or do nothing. I've had 1 3rd party card that was crap, it erased/replaced/corrupted files within a week (this is why I only loaded 'test' files into it from other cards.) I also had one that worked beatuifully.

I also have a first party card that I found covered in sticky, gunky stuff and a heavy coating of dust under the counter at a lil' game store I used to go to. I cleaned it up and have it back to the owner. Well, he took his toddler to work with him, so it was only a couple weeks later that I found it covered in stinky, gunky stuff and a heavy coating of dust under the counter. This time he told me to just keep it, he figured after all that it wouldn't work.... but it does. Quite well. I've had it for a couple years now. On the flipside, my BF's PS2 card from launch up and died no for no good reason a few months ago, and he takes care of his stuff to the point that his PS2, from launch till last summer, gathered less dust in the fan/filter than mine had in 6 months. You just can't tell...
