How long is the DS Lite's life?

superspiffy

CAGiversary!
I just got a DS Lite today after hearing how good it is. But how long do you think this system's life is gonna be? I don't know when it was released, and I don't know how long other gameboys lasted until a new model was release. I hope I didn't buy it at the wrong time.

:D the DS Lite was released June 11, 2006. I don't think you have to worry about a new model coming out anytime soon.

There is the rumor about a new ds in 2007. Figuring it will be something like GBA SP, not necessary but I will need it cause its ds.

Even if they release a new model it will still be something that plays standard DS games and you will be able to play them on your lite.

I think the better question is "How long will the DS's life span be?"

I think the DS will continue to steam roll through the industry. EA is trying to get their games to match well with the system (The Sims DS), Japan knows that its the number one platform in the country (Dragon Quest 9), and more developers are going to use it to make wacky, cheap games.

I can see the DS lasting for a long time. And there aren't too many things that could be improved over the Lite.

I think the DS will stick around for a good while. I think we can count on at least another 3-4 years of quality support. You can look at the previous handheld generations for precedent. The GBA was released in 2001, and only now is on its last legs, having been eclipsed by the DS. That, and the DS is way more popular than the GBA ever was, so I think we can expect it to last a good while longer.

If that's true, it won't be for a while, because Nintendo JUST released the Lite.

I can't imagine Nintendo releasing a DS with a larger screen. It would make the unit larger, and could create problems with making games for both screen sizes.

The pattern seems to be 2 years. So if there is actually a newer version (with bigger screen) coming out, it won't be until 2008.

Of course, I used logic there, and that doesn't always apply.

Not sure what the purpose would really be, .3" isn't going to make a difference in any way.

So? It wasn't that long after the DS came out that the Lite came out, Nintendo knows they can just print money with making "new" systems.

Could another DS edition be in the works?

Jeux-France is reporting that Nintendo is already working on a third version of its dual-screen handheld. The biggest change this time around would allegedly be an increase in screen size, from 3 inches on the current regular and Lite models to between 3.5 and 3.8 inches for each screen.

The same report indicates that new colors of the Wii console will become available in Japan during spring of next year. No confirmation or corroboration so far, so this cannot be considered a firm report as of yet.

nintendojo is about as reliable as the crazy hobo on the corner who smells like pee and screams that the world will next tuesday, in fact he may run the site for all I know.

I don't see the bigger screen thing working out, making the lite didn't change anything it just rearranged some stuff and had a brighter screen. If a bigger screen is made then the new games won't work on the old DSes (unless it simply stretched for the bigger screens, but then it would look like shit).

The next DS/Game Boy will probably come out around 2010. There might be another revision, but I don't see how much they could really change.

The main things I could see being improved would be moving the screens even closer together and maybe making it lighter/thinner. Though I wouldn't call it large or heavy as it is...

Then you could make the volume two buttons rather than a slider and maybe give you some way to adjust the contrast outside of the startup screen.

The triggers could probably be a little nicer, too.

Oh, and they could make it WPA compliant for wifi. That would be really nice.

I don't know it's all pretty minor stuff.

I'm sure there'll be another minor update in the future but I don't see it being near as big as the DS to DS Lite upgrade. Maybe try and slim it up/lighten it a bit, better battery life, maybe make it a bit sturdier feeling (the lite feels fragile to me compared to the tank that was the DS), minor stuff but nothing real big.

I'd expect the overall DS life cycle to last at least through 2009 with continued support through 2010. Part of that will depend on Sony and when they come out with a sequel and if Microsoft or any other company develops a serious entry to the handheld world.
