How Long Till I have a DRE Meltdown?

ok so my brother came for a visit and I was showing him off my new ps2 (SC3 :p)

Then I load up Ace Combat 5..the system boots, shows the PS2 type screen, then you can hear the disc rev up and down and black screen.

War of the Worlds (2005) dvd starts skipping like crazy til is finally locks up. It starts after ray gets out of the basement to find the airplane destoryed the houses near his ex-wifes house

All other discs play fine including games..

so how long til my DRE on all discs? a week a month? This really sucks as I got this on black friday. :(
 
It's really YMMV.

I've had my PS2 for a little over ... 3.5 years and haven't had a problem with it yet. I have the older version of the PS2, however, and am not sure if they are more prone to DREs than the classic model.

Did you buy AC5 used or new? Is the game scratched up at all?

Ace Combat 5 is brand new from TRU non GH (10 bucks :) ) ...no scratches nor smudges.. I can see the PS logo stamps clearly on the data side of the disc. last time i played the game was 2 days ago.
 
I think it's all a matter of luck. My ps2 has been running for over a year due to an mmo, It's on when I sleep, when I go out, when I'm doing something else. The only time it has shut off in over a year is when I have to restart it from a blackscreen (normal in the mmo I play) but then it is back on within 2 minutes.
 
What model PS2 is it, old style or the slim model? I would look into returning the system if you only bought it a few weeks ago.
 
Are you hearing the ugly sounding "click click click" inside the system? if not you might be okay for now. If you have a very old system are you using the DVD remote with te most recent viewer on you rmemory card? I recall there being something about improving movie playback, but I forget what it was exactly.

AC5 is a DVD game, you would probably see the problem occur first in a CD based game first before that. As for the movie, it could be the disk, try it in another DVD player but sometimes the PS2 is just crappy like that. I've had a few movies that played just fine up untill a certain point and lock up but not very many this could be one of those random ones.


or maybe get a compressed air can and try blowing the inside of the system, it could be a spec of dust.
 
its the PS2 Slim model SCPH-70012

the game has been returned, now my local best buy says its instock but the idiots can't find it :( So now I have to buy it from somewhere else.

All other games seem to be working perfectly at this time. Even my 1999 copy of CV:SOTN which I am playing at this time works perfectly.

Ok now whats this thing Im reading about the power supply heating up and catching on fire and need a replacement cable?
 
ok now this is really weird.. bought ace combat 5 AGAIN on sunday..worked perfectly :)...Now fired it up again...guess what? WONT BOOT. This is the only game thats causing me problems..whats going on here? the first copy was non greatest hits, now this copy which is gh is having the problems that the first one had..works fine the first few time, but after awhile it wont boot anymore..both games were brand new sealed and bought from tru and best buy...whats up with this!?!?!?!?

what should I do? Return/exchange my ps2? im still within 30 days but worried about loosing my double reward zone points as I got it on black friday. :(
