How loud is the Playstation 3?

Wolfpup

CAGiversary!
This is my contingency post. I'm going to be getting my fourth 360 soonish, but if it drives me nuts because of how loud it is I may be forced to make the PS3 my main system (even if Sony's ticked me off by dropping backwards compatibility!)

Just wondering-how loud are these things when used to run Playstation 3 games? I had one home back in January, but it was defective so I returned it and didn't have a chance to run a PS3 game. It was almost as quiet as my slim PS2 when running DVDs and PS2 games though-but then the 360 is (relatively) quieter when running X-Box 1 and DVD discs.

How does it compare to other systems, like a Wii or PS2 or 360 when operating at full blast? I've actually heard demo units in stores that are as loud as a 360-just roaring-but I suspect it's just because they're enclosed in a tiny area and the fans have to ramp all the way up.

The Wii is the quietest of my systems. My Halo 360 is noticeably quieter than my original 360. So far I think my PS3 fans are the loudest but that's just relative to the other two. Ultimately, I only notice the sound of the fans on any of those systems in the beginning, and tune it out once I'm actively playing.
My PS3 is nearly dead silent. The only time I can even tell it's on is when it's folding.
I second that - very quiet - good system for AUDIO/VIDEO-(phile) - that's one thing that always bothered me if playing let's say a DVD on the X360 - too much system noise in the quieter scenes.... Pleastantly surprised w/the PS3 on noise-factor.

Really? #-o My xbox360 sounds like a turbo jet compared to the PS3 LOL!

I was dusting off the consoles one morning and accidentally turned on the PS3. I didn't notice until I saw the green "on" light later after work. It was on for 11 hours before I turned it off! I did not hear it at all while I was watching TV.

Edit: I turned on my ps2 (about a foot away from my PS3) and it is louder than the PS3.

I have a launch 60gb ps3.

Silent as can be.. great cuz its right by my tv.. and im nearly two feet away and can barely hear it..

Awesome! So it sounds like it is quiet when it's running PS3 games too, right?

The response on 360 forums is usually "Just turn up your volume" :D

I agree with Mana Knight-the 360's jet engine is reason enough to get multiplatform games on the PS3 instead. Heck, even for games that aren't ported well. (I'd almost rather play the PS2 version of a game...)

I'd be willing to pay at least $50-200 more for a 360 that wasn't so freaking loud.

Also keep in mind while 360 may have the "Better" looking version of a game sometimes, the difference is so small you'd have to compare the games side-by-side to see the difference.

I have a 60GB that used to be almost silent but I've noticed it's getting louder lately and I'm not sure why. Anyone had this happen to them, or guesses as to what could be going on? My Wii would sometimes get pretty loud, but I think it was because it was off balance as it would go back to normal after I repositioned it. I haven't moved the PS3 at all, though.

my 60GB is nearly silent as well, compared to my 360 its no contest, I dont even notice my PS3 until I see the green light.

It bothers you that much? My 360 is fairly loud but it has never really bothered me. I don't play my games super loud but they still drown out the noise of the 360.

if its quiet enough u can normally hear the laser going back n forth and sometimes the fans but nothing noticeable

Hmm, mine is definitely not as silent as everyone else seems to be stating here. I'd say it's less noisy when the 360 is spinning a disc, but more noisy than when my 360 is just running something off the HD. Also, does anyone else get a strange "clicking" when playing games? It's hard to describe... it's not exactly like what happens when an HD is failing, and, other than one instance when R&C had the audio get way out of synch, my games have been playing just fine. Anyone else have this? I think I may call Sony about it after I get to play Uncharted... although if they have to replace it I better get a 60GB back...

Same here

i think i have that "problem" if u wanna call it that too. like it sounds like a piece of plastic is being tossed like some dice for a few secs then stops.. then comes back every while.

The PS3 is the system that makes the least amount of noise. The Xbox 360 makes loud disc spinning/air blowign sounds. The Wii makes weird grinding sounds. The PS3 makes very light disc spinning nosie, and occasional fan noise.

Err, maybe something like that... like a piece of plastic is snapping back or something. =)

Is that "normal"? Have you had any problems with your games?

I remember the good old days when game systems weren't snazzy enough to need fans.

But yeah, PS3 is quiet. I sometimes forget to leave the glass door to my entertainment center open, though, and it heats up to the point where another noisier fan kicks in. That's all I've noticed.

Agreed, the only noise I heard from my PS3 was the light disc spin, and the beeps when I was turning it on or off. It's a very quiet system.

My PS3 is quiet....but sometimes it seems to ramp up and make a bit more noise....maybe a heat issue, but I know it is ventilated pretty well.

I hated playing CD disc based games on my PS2 because they made too much noise. It bothers me when people make noise outside my apartment. When I play a video game, I just want quiet all around me. I tend to keep my music on TV speakers low and I just want to hear the game music (hearing a little fan doesn't bother me). But when I can clearly hear it over the game music, it becomes a big distraction for me and I lose my concentration. That's why I have problems buying a game on a louder console.

To tell you the truth, I don't even hear it while watching a movie (during quiet scenes) or while playing games late at night (turned down the volume)...

Mines a launch system BTW...

My PS3 is pretty quiet. The only time it really kicks up is when I leave it for downloading, but that's because I have to leave it on for a long time because my school's network sucks.

I agree. We actually did a poll on another forum, and discovered that the people who didn't think the 360 was too loud also listen to heavy metal music regularly :D

I'm borderline offended by people who say "just turn up the volume!" :dunce:

The PS3's loudness depends on how hot it's running. During summer time, it was extremely loud for me. I was thinking, "What are people talking about? It's no where near quiet." But as we approach winter, it's really quiet when the room is. If it's working hard, like doing folding@home, the fan will ramp up accordingly, until reaching it's max speed, which is very loud.

My PS3 is quiet whenever. I had it running at my home, and two different apartments I lived in. It does give me a nice heater though. :D

Absolutely true. And if you choke off its ventilation by putting it into a closed cabinet, it gets very loud very fast!
Huh. Interesting. Well, at least it's drive is quieter I guess.
I still think my Dreamcast is the loudest for disc access ... sounds like a damn blender

I think my 360's were louder than my Dreamcast, but it was close. They were all too damn loud (who would think you even need to worry about that in a piece of consumer electronics?)

I just read a story on Next Gen.biz that the newest model PS3 (which unfortunately and stupidly killed backwards compatibility) DID switch to a 65nm CPU after all, and is 6db quieter even than the original PS3 (they said 30 versus 36-which is really impressive.

I don't even hear my PS3 when its folding at night, I get more annoyed by the bright ass LEDs when everything in my room is off and its dark...

To be totally honest, I don't even see how people get annoyed by the sound of systems. I have dog ears and can tell slight flucutations(sp?) in sound and don't hear jack

Have you owned a 360 or Dreamcast? I'm willing to put up with an Original Playstation 2/Gamecube/Wii level of noise. I think that's reasonable. Even a standard PC level of noise would be okay (the 360's I've had when at the dash).

But when I have to turn up the TV's volume, and it's distracting, there's a problem!

My PS3 doesn't make any sound I can hear during gameplay. The Wii is louder, infact, especially when the disc drive is loading.

same here...when the system is idle it's pretty quiet. I once had my ps3 on for a few hours (to warm up the room a little after a shower in fact lol) and I forgot that it was on right as I was about to go to sleep. I didn't notice that it was on while I was workin on my pc which is right next to it that entire time. When I'm watchin a movie or playin a game though, the fan can pump out some decibels which sometimes can be annoying, but it's bearable. I think it has more to do with the fact that the ps3 is on my desk which is almost on the same level as my ears most of the time.

I can't even tell when my PS3 is on it's so quiet

I thought the Wii was surprisingly loud too when running Wii games. Not bad or unreasonable at all, but just not impressive for a 6 year old piece of hardware that's supposedly small and quiet. (But just to be clear, it's completely reasonable and doesn't bother me. But it's louder and larger than a modern PS2, so not that impressive.) Mine's similar to an original Playstation 2 or Gamecube I think. Way, way, way quieter than the 3 360's I've had.

I actually brought home another 360 tonight, but I can't decide if I want to open it or not. It's FDOU 739 9/24/07. I'm so torn on it. On the one hand, it's got a ton of games that are must have for me personally. But on the other hand, my first three were CRAZY loud, and all died.

If I could somehow magically get Rare, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, etc. on to the PS3...

Yikes! I just found an article where they mod a 360 (with some really common sense items) to get the optical drive quieter.

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2066867,00.asp

The scary thing is, it's 60db before modification! The old PS3 is supposedly 36dB, the new one is 30... that makes the 360, what, ONE THOUSAND TWENTY FOUR times louder than the Playstation 3!?! Am I calculating that right? That can't be right...?

Supposedly 50-60dB is normal conversation, and

Actually, I do own both (been many years since I've bothered with my Dreamcast though). Quite honestly, I don't even know why I bother with these threads, because I view them as whine central for "noise". I mean really, does it bother you when there is a fan or AC going in the summer and you're watching TV or playing a game? What about in the winter and the heat comes on? More than likely not. You tune it out, right? Even if I could hear my systems with my damn near dog ears, I would end up tuning it out. Its not like its the emergency broadcast signal or pink noise

My PS3 is 99% silent. Sometimes one of my cats will walk on the Blu-ray remote which will turn it on, and I won't even notice until I see the power light.

Humansnatcher, if my furnace was as loud as my old 360's I'm pretty sure I'd run from the house before it exploded :D

I powered on the 360 last night to start Fable, and my mom comes in from another room looking around, and asks "is that that game thing? what's wrong with it?"

And that's with a "QUIET" 360, running a game that keeps the DVD drive running slow. I told her "uh...that's normal...it's actually much louder when it runs a newer game" and she didn't sound too pleased (I don't think SHE'S thrilled I keep going through these systems...I really do think this is my last one.)
