I'm not necessarilly Hoarding, but I'm collecting video games to sell back on Ebay for a profit.

I'm building up an inventory right now and I'm wondering when would be the best time to sell for a nice profit? Would it be Days? Months? Years? After a Special Event? If someone would tell me I would gladly appreciate the advice (No Pun Intended.)

Right now in my Inventory I have collected:

[PS1]*Final Fantasy VII (GH)* - I bought this at Best buy for $8 a year ago on clearance...now that I think of it...I should've bought more than one XD
Just wait for the next ebay 10 cents listings and set the price you want for those items.
I'm fairly new to CAG...ebay $.10 listing? What is that? can it be found here?

You can't make profit in the long-run overall by holding on to games and selling them some time later. You can't figure out which games will become the next Suikoden II or Panzer Dragoon Saga. Game prices, with very few exceptions, go down with time. Even when you buy the most likely candidates for holding value, it just doesn't work out enough.

Here's the thing. If a game really skyrockets in price, a publisher can easily go do another printing. This doesn't happen with older games a couple of console generations ago, but then you can't buy and hold on to games 10 years hoping a game will go up in price.

This said, you will always make much more money than normal if you sell a game during the release of a sequel. Sell FFVII when FFXII comes out. Sell God of War when God of War 2 is being released. Other than those two though, I don't really see any game that might have an eventual price increase. I would hold on to the SNES carts, since the price probably won't drop much any more, but the current generation stuff I'd sell as quickly as I can.

Remember, as everybody here will tell you: Videogames are terrible investment vehicles. Collect them to play. Collect them because you are obsessive/compuslive. Collect them because they're cheap. But don't collect them so that you can make a profit down the line. The only time you really can make a profit is if you can buy a game that will provide you an immediate profit if turned around and sold on ebay, and the longer you hold on to the game, the less your ebay profit will be, 99% of the time. This is especially true in today's videogame marketplace. There's a tremendous downward pressure on videogame prices these days. Videogames are depreciating quicker than any time I can remember during the twenty years I've been buying videogames. The videogame market crash of the early 80s was just before my time. Maybe it was worse then.

I have a closet full of still-in-the-cellophane Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, Intellivision and Colecovision cartridges. Besides one or two, most of them are next to worthless. I own them because of their box-art, their "cool" factor, etc.

If you want to buy something that will someday go up in value and make you money, consider stocks. Part of the problem with Video Games is that emulation kills alot of the collectibility. Why spend $100 bucks on a rare catrtridge when you can download the rom and play it for nothing.
When that happens, people are buying the box art, the instruction booklet, etc.

Considering that Atari 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, and other TRULY vintage systems have cartridges that brand-new-unwrapped still only fetch a few dollars each, with only a HANDFULL actually turning big money (and "big" is a relative term), I dont know if I'd put alot of faith in modern game collecting for PROFIT.

Then I guess the only time games would go up in profit is when something drastic happens...if that...

...For example: The Media Says, "Oh no! The Classic Video Game Composer Nobuo Uematsu Has Died! His Music were featured in blah blah games etc.."

And then that would be the time to Sell those games....if that...right?

*YAWN*

When will people realize videogames are poor investments. Collections are built as a hobby, but otherwise they are worthless (unless your collect Picassos or something).

And another thing, Today's games Seem to depreciate in value alot...but there are few games (Like FFVII, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Valkyrie Profile, etc) that have gone up in value....why?
And another thing, Today's games Seem to depreciate in value alot...but there are few games (Like FFVII, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Valkyrie Profile, etc) that have gone up in value....why?
Because some older games (typically certain role playing games) are highly desired and since people can't buy them in stores anymore they pay a premium on ebay. HOWEVER the vast majority of RPGs for any system are worth much less now than they were when released, even if you got a good deal on them then.

If you're going to hoard and try to make a profit on it when you need to do is quite simple:

1. Wait for a sale or deal.
2. Visit 5 or more stores that have this deal going and pick up the games that are the newest releases/highest resell value on ebay. If this is hard to determine simply go by what people in the thread want the most from the sale.
3. If prices on ebay don't take a sudden hit immediatley dump the games, if the price drops wait a few weeks before you resell.

Simple and effective way to make a profit, plus if the item price isn't high enough you can often return the games within a month of purchase.

The only other decent hoarding method (which is quite a bit more risky) is to find a reasonably hard to find game, buy a bunch of them and resell them when the sequel comes out.

If you're only planning on selling the games and are completely done with them, the best time to sell them would be ASAP. You would make more off the interest in a 5% savings account with the money than you will by sitting on those games any longer. The only FF that might really make you money is VII, Chronicles (GH) you might only get back what you paid and the profit on Origins will be minimal.

I wouldn't count on God of War being worth a whole lot later on, which is to say not any more than a non-GH version of something like Twisted Metal Black, less than $10 pretty soon. It was a popular game not made by some niche developer like Atlus that people seem to go nuts over, so there are always going to be plenty of copies available.

Very Enlightening, folks. Thank you guys for your opinions. Keep it coming!

Any chance the Classic NES series might be worth more in the future?

I was wondering the same when seeing Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda both going for more than the current $10 new price for that series. Seeing how there are tons of versions of these games as well as Pacman and Donkey Kong no one will really pay a high price for these games.
I think maybe hardcore collector's will see them as worth more. I doubt too many people will be really willing to buy these games for about $20 or whatever the original price at most with the Wii letting you download them legally soon.

First of all you have to ask yourself how much are you looking to make? $5? $10? double what you pay for? You could be easily spending too much time and money for little profit. Dont be suprise if in a few months the value ended not changing or even drop for most of those games. You are going to have a tough time gussing the next $100+ game, and you also have to deal with reprints which is getting more common.

It seems like you are hoping to make some decent profit when in fact i think you would be lucky to break even for most of the stuff. Games like God of War Kingdom Hearts 2 are only going to drop in value. I mean people have been reselling Time Crisis 3 since the gamestop sale, and outpost.com still have them in stock.

A game like Classic NES Series: Super Mario Bros, which is worth decent money right now, might get a reprint making it worthless.

the way you are buying things are kinda random, and a little too risky. If I were you I would look into getting collector's edition of Final Fantasy XIII, something that could be a better investment. at the same time i wouldnt blindly buying any limited edtion. Something like death jr limited edition might be rare, but it is not worth much.

edit:
Just to give a few example of games that i got burned:

Amazing island - when it was $20 at B&M i found that i could sell it for $40 online. Did it a few times but quickly the price drop to less than $20 shipped. Still got 2 extra copies that would be a lost if i sell them.
Held on to sealed gitaroo man and rez too long.

others here have been burned by skies of acadia, resident evil 2+3 when they got reprinted.

You will find that video game addicts can be the most ruthless eBay scalpers, right up there will the tech guys, hot wheels guys, tool scalpers, etc.

They only thing more ruthless are the soccer moms. They will run you over in their mini van just to beat you to a garage sale or clearance or holiday sale.

there are so many better products to invest in that turn better profit (stocks are a good example) - and in terms of making a quick buck - things like selling printers, laptops, blah blah after buying them on the cheap at office max, frys sales with mail in rebates is a much better way to go.
Huh?
QFT.

I don't see any way in the world you are going to end up making money off of the stuff you bought. If you are looking to sell on eBay I would have to think video games are on the bottom of the profitability list.

Well I am planingWell I am planing to open a store but I am lacking the funds, netspace, and tools....so here is my judgement.

$10 now like never

Street Fighter Anthology is crap compared to the arcades and will be worth money if the PS2 model is still around later.
$25 now like never

These are arcade perfect you idiot.

one way to make a profit, (i did it to break on the money even and get a few free games) is to take advantage of the b1g1 or b2g1 free deals. TRU recently had a b2g1 DS deal involving some fairly new releases. just buy a shitload...say 12 and list them on ebay. you can count on $25 for each set of 3...so profit = ~$100.00. of course some will disagree with my math, but that is what i was able to bring...it was actually more on average due to the $5 off DS game coupon. in the end, i had several games on my want list with almost $0 out of pocket...only expense was gas and personal time.

in the end, vg as an investment of business is nothing you can eat on...you can however fund a moderate gaming habit such as i have done. i recycle games and rarely come out of pocket on anything...hell hunting deals is almost as fun as playing the games.

Yeah, I don't see the point....you MIGHT make a few dollars, but nothing great. I still have my HALO LE XBOX (The green one)....I may hold that for a while since it was a limited run, but I don't want to sell it yet...so that is why I'm holding it. It's used anyways.
I'm not necessarilly Hoarding, but I'm collecting video games to sell back on Ebay for a profit.
you dont collect to sell
You can't make profit in the long-run overall by holding on to games and selling them some time later. You can't figure out which games will become the next Suikoden II or Panzer Dragoon Saga. Game prices, with very few exceptions, go down with time. Even when you buy the most likely candidates for holding value, it just doesn't work out enough.
This sums it up pretty much perfectly. I think anyone holding on to current gen stuff is crazy. Stuff from older gens is less likely to go down over the course of several months, but current gen games are going to drop much faster.

Oh and Regal, I have a copy of God of War and Zelda:LttP I'd be happy to sell you at 20% discounts!

I really can't see any of those games going any higher in value. As others have already said, invest your money elsewhere. Buy video games to play video games, not to make a buck.
Well I am planingWell I am planing to open a store but I am lacking the funds, netspace, and tools....so here is my judgement.
Your custom user title is very ironic.

I still have a copy of God of War and Zelda LttP I'm willing to sell you Regal. Of course GoW's value has increased considerably since going GH so I'd have to charge you $80 for it now.

Heres the thing, business is all about supply and demand. Demand is a very funny thing, people might demand to have a ps3 at launch and therefore will pay extereme prices that are way above cost. After sony comes out with more systems to meet actual demand, no one is going to buy a PS3 for more than what it sells for in retail stores.

When it comes to games though, its alot harder to know when these things will happen. It used to be the trend that RPGs were very likely to become rare and should be grabbed up as soon as possible. This is of course happend with snes rpgs like chrono trigger and the final fantasys, and then again on PSone with games like suikoden and valkyrie profile.

The thing is companies arent dumb anymore. Gaming has become more main stream and so has playing rpgs. So these companies realize this and rerelease these rpgs to get paid again. Many do it as ports, it started with old rpgs coming to psone, final fantasy origins, anthology and chronicles are key examples. Now its a mixture of ports to handheld as weve seen with final fantasy on GBA, Valkyrie Profile on psp and a bunch of other games that havent hit the US market(Suikoden 1and2 in japan, Tales of Eternia Breath of Fire 3 in japan and europe).

On top of that you have companies like GQD which are starting to do reprints on games, which is making them money before people realize they are reprints and then they stop buying them as much.

So when you add in all the factors of ports, reprints by GQD, reprints by companies themselves, compilation rereleases(Castlevania double pack) and now things like Virtual Console for Wii. Its hard to see many games reaching the rare status that so many games have in the past.

Long story short: If you are going to sell for a profit you are going to have to sell it as soon as you get the deal, and even then you wont make that great a profit after you factor in ebay fees, paypal fees, gas you used to get the deal, gas to go to the PO. So dont think of CAG as a get rich quick spot, think of it as a better way to afford your gaming addiction :)

Looks to me the bumper wants to attack RegalSin?

Anyways, looking at your first post dated many months back, it clearly shows that games are poor investments. Your Phoenix Wright games have been re-printed and no longer hard to find, you were wrong on God of War, etc. (*Edit - this isn't an attack on you), it just makes me realize that it truly is hard to determine which games will be the next $600 seller (World of Warcraft CE) and that its not worth the effort to figure it out.

BTW, do you still have that sealed FFVII GH and what would it take for you to unload it?

*Edit - I don't think any of the posters after the "bump" realize how old this topic is.

Well, there's no need to attack one another here on CAG...unless you're a hoarder/Spammer.

And sorry, my FFVII is mines to keep. I also had the PC version, but I threw it away when it didn't work with my windows XP....then they made a patch for it. God i was stupid.

And not all of my predictions go to waste. From what Ive seen....most of my classic NES Series go for good money complete/sealed...hopefully it'll go up more after the VC release...only time will tell.

And I've seen pokemon bundle sets go for $60 BIN prices. so it's not that bad.

anywho, Mods please lock this thread, no need for more discussion on this topic.
[PS1]*Final Fantasy Chronicles (GH) same as below
$15 now should gain value like in a 60 years
Oh brave prophet, what will happen to Iraq in 50 years?

Pokemon games will ALWAYS hold their value, last christmas i watched sealed copies of pokemon silver and gold go for over 60$ each on ebay, why because no one bothered to keep them sealed and no one even has boxes for them anymore.

Pokemon box for gamecube is worth over 200$ and originally cost 20$

However the problem is that pokemon fire red and leaf green have already gotten greatest hits so those games will never be worth a lot. They may do greatest hits of the other pokemon games for gba though, you would be surprised for what some gameboy games sell for on ebay.

Its not hard to predict which games will sell well, also if no one is holding onto current gen stuff than what makes you think that demand for sealed current gen stuff will be less, if no one is going to hold onto it. Someone has to hold onto it...

I'm holding onto my Pokemon box. It's too valuable for me to sell and it looks nice on the shelf :D

Ha! Very true. I didn't even look at the dates on the earlier posts - I stumbled upon this thread while searching for something. Anyway, sorry about bumping old threads and generally causing trouble.
