How soon until PS3 over the counter? aka should I wait?

What I mean is, do you think that after the X-mas craze, how soon do you think they'll be on shelves. Or more specifically, does anyone think that'll I'll be able to find one at a TRU before mid January.

The reason I ask, is that I've won a "25% off your entire purchase at Toys R Us" from that crazy AMEX seasonal promo, and these are usually good for about a month, that'd be around mid January. Now barring any exclusions(which there weren't last year) I'd love to use it to put a dent in that PS3 purchase. I haven't gotten the coupon yet, but I should be getting it this week.

To further complicate things, I was lucky enough to get one (60GB) from my EB recently, and I have until mid-January to return the thing, as I have not opened it yet, and have been weighing my options on to keep it or not.

So what do ya'll think? Has anyone been able to walk in and get a PS3 over the counter, without waiting in some crazy line? Anyone in South Florida?

it's quite possible.i heard several retailers are getting several ps3 return from customers who try to ebay them and was shock how low it went for.
Maybe after we see another 15-20 of these threads.
You think? Man, I better start making more then.

Yeah I get it, there's a lot of similar topics around, alls I'm asking, is if you where in my position, with a coupon that's good for a month, worth 25% off the price of the thing. Do you think there's a a chance to find one before mid-Jan. Do you keep the one in hand and forgo the chance to save some money, or take the risk and return it and hope to find one before the coupon expires?

I doubt it, the 360 wasn't easy to find last January and the Wii seems to be putting out more units than the PS3 and I think it might be hard to find one of those in January.

I think they said NO more will be shipping for Xmas...so, it will still be tough to find (unless you look on Ebay ;) )

I would just check every Sunday morning...they seem to wait until then....not sure about TRU though.

Here's how it's been since the PS2: the 'hot' launch console of a given holiday is very difficult to find as a random 'walk-in' purchase until mid-March. The PS2 was like that, as was the 360. I would imagine the original Xbox also followed a similar path. The only thing that could accelerate this for the PS3 is its prohibitive cost for many, as well as most would-be eBayers probably not even bothering after Christmas (one could still make a mediocre profit on a 360 well into February).

On a side note, I think the Wii could be a tough find a lot longer than people think, or on the other hand, its white-hot trendiness with the general public could cool off lightning-quick after the holidays, and as a result, it could be an easy acquisition by late January. Personally, I see the PS3 slowly moving along in 2007, setting itself up for a big holiday season, and the Wii falling out of favor of the easily distracted (i.e. most of the U.S. population).

Its already getting a LOT easier. I read every day on numerous forums stories of PS3s sitting on shelves for over 48 hours. I would be sceptic but I go to work this morning and we have 8 60gigs instock since Saturday night, we have sold two.

Many do not want to spend $600 playing 360 ports.

I walked into Gamestop at bought a 20GB. A few weeks later, 20 gig in hand, I walked into another Gamestop and returned it for a 60 gig. I asked what they had, and they said they had plenty in stock. And this is Miami, not some small town. In Chicago two weeks ago, I walked into Target to find 3 20 gigs sitting in the display case. Yesterday at Toys "R" Us there in Miami they had two 20s and a 60 sitting there on a table in the middle of the video game section. The PS3 is off to a terrible start, and you'll be able to walk in and buy one by early January.

Too bad. It is a great system, and really does impress me (though the games are not that exciting so far), but it doesn't compare to the "fun" of a Wii, which is why you won't be able to find a Wii for a while.

Yeah, I'm kind of wondering too, because I'm waiting to get a PS3, when I can find one over the counter. After what happened to me today, I hope I can find a 20GB one sooner than later (like around Jan.).
Many do not want to spend $600 playing 360 ports.
Resistance, Genji 2, and Untold Legends DK are NOT 360 ports, which are 3 out of the 4 games I want most. I rather buy 360 ports on PS3 since a PS3 is less likely to break down, and I rather play games on a quieter console (Noisy console = distracting). PS3 isn't just $600, it's $500 (which is why I'm buying the $500 model). I'm so tired of people saying the PS3 is $600 (The 20GB model is actually good, unlike the 360 retard pack).

lol the retard pack.

Just how noisy is the 360 anyway? I was playing the Lost Planet demo at a fry's and I could hear a very noticeable whirring, almost very slight rumbling sound through the plastic casing. I thought maybe there was a fan in there or something but I didn't think too much into it.

If you're playing a game from the DVD drive, then it's another story (especially if it's a Hitachi DVD drive). I thought the Dreamcast was loud, but the 360 is definitely louder. From what I've seen in homes with a PS3, it's one of the quietest consoles ever, which is a huge plus for me (I'm the type who gets bothered easily by any noise, such as someone outside talking loud).

Overall, I'm still very curious as to when I'll see a PS3 sitting around most anywhere, since that's when I'll get one for sure (I already decided to downsize my wishlist).

I say around March. Considering that MS was able to ship more 360s than Sony could during the 360 launch period, and you still couldn't find one easily until March 06, I'd say you're going to have a tougher time with the PS3. When I say March, I'm being optimistic. Wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't until later.

Also, I think the reason why people are seeing PS3s are for two reasons: Dumb luck. You really don't think hundreds of people in say Chicago or Miami are calling every store every day trying to score one? I think alot of these people who claim they've seen "tons" (usually 1 or 2) PS3s on the shelves just happen to walk into a store at the right time.

The other reason why is probably because yeah sure, the PS3s may be sitting on the shelf, and they're waiting to be purchased. But honestly, who is going to spend $600 unless they've been trying to spend the money. I only know of 2 people who saw a PS3 randomly on a shelf, but they only bought one to sell to make a small profit.

I live in Miami and I am SO not seeing them sitting on shelves. I must live in the rich part of Miami where people like to spend money. Bastards

And Genji and UL are critically panned for being terrible games.

My 360 runs pretty quiet and its a launch unit. Maybe you should try taking it off of the shag carpeting.

Yeah, I've gotten another coupon from them (Brookstone), and it's only good until 1/15/07. Last year those coupons were delivered quick. It seems they're slacking this year.

Yes, because we all know how Sony makes quality systems. Please see the upside down PS1's and DRE's on PS2s.
Yes, because we all know how Sony makes quality systems. Please see the upside down PS1's and DRE's on PS2s.
My Xbox broke twice. I know more people with a broken Xbox than PS2. Just look at the size of the 360 death thread (I was one of them whose 360 broke). They break down.

I own a PS1, PSOne, PS2, and PSP, and haven't had a single problem with them.

With the way the prices have dropped on ebay, you could possibly pick one up for retail around January on the bay. Tax could be conisdered the shipping ;). I just saw a 20GB for 500.00 shipped end up with no bids.

If you wanna sell a PS3 on eBay, be prepaired to LOSE money.

say have you gotten your certificates yet?
I found the wishlist faq page cached from google search and they say it's supposed to be processed within 72 business hours, and shipped UPS next day air.

I found my printout of one of the certificate orders I got (I forgot to print out the other one...), and I won the certs on the 10th, so it's been over a week now without anything.

It better not be UPS screwin up like they usually do...
I don't have a very flattering track record with UPS at all.

-edit-
actually no...I do hope that it's UPS screwin up like they usually do...I don't need AMEX to start jackin me around too :\

I can't say much about the xbox, but I have had 0 problems with my ps2 in the 5 years that I've had it

hm...well looks like I got my Best Buy wish certificate from AMEX today...though I still don't have my Toys R Us one.... even though I won them on the same day. The Toys R Us certificate was even earlier in the day than the Best Buy one.

i bought a ps3 for a friend on ebay, 20gb, for 460 shipped today. its a pretty good bargain to just buy a ps3 on ebay.

you mean, peopel actualy WANT Genji 2 and Untold Legend? Genji 2 got terrible camera nagle and Untold Legend, well let say, soem Legend is better left untold, although it made a good cape simulator.

They're going below retail now? LOL

how do people find such low prices for it? lol
I tried looking but I keep saying them go for over $500

Anyway anybody know what the biggest TRU store around the bay area is? I'm wondering maybe the more popular stores get more units shipped to them than the smaller stores.

There's this guy that works at the local TRU and everytime I call or go in to ask about it he doesn't sound very happy about getting asked at all lol

I never noticed noise from consoles, newer gen consoles I have always had controller extension cords or wirless controllers and the system hooked up to my ampflier with cerwin vega speakers so I hear nothing but the game. Kinda shame to buy an expensive console and be listening to it through tv speakers and sitting right on of the console. Just an observation, no takeing sides in the Micrsoft/Sony console fanboy wars. I only own PS2 and Gamecube, and have owned a Xbox 1, and only own PS2 because of HDadvance and god of war, because on PS2 the only exclusive games worth owning was God of War.

Yup, Ebay is definately the way to go. The evening is the best time because there is an auction ending every few seconds, so youre bound to snag one that no one else bids on. They were going for $600-$640 shipped yesterday (60GB). I picked up a 20GB with Resistance and extra controller for $550 shipped overnight. I would have paid $652 for the same bundle at a store in my area (7% tax).

damn that's a sweet price
I just saw a 20gb go for slightly over $700 :\
try a dreamcast.
I disagree. My 360 is definitely louder, for sure. I thought my Dreamcast was loud (or even playing a scratched up, CD based game on the PS2), but I couldn't hear it clearly from a distance. What makes the 360 loud is when I'm playing a 360 game. Playing an Xbox game or a game off the HDD, it's not bad (especially since I have a Samsung drive now. The Hitachi drives are really loud).
you mean, peopel actualy WANT Genji 2 and Untold Legend? Genji 2 got terrible camera nagle and Untold Legend, well let say, soem Legend is better left untold, although it made a good cape simulator.
To be honest, I really, really liked the first Genji (mostly because of the gameplay). The biggest problem I've heard with the sequel (that may bother me a little) is the camera, but I've dealt with so many bad cameras before and they never bothered me. Gameplay being exactly like the first, nothing new, and a little repetitive, is okay with me. ;)

As for Untold Legends DK, I definitely don't know what to expect, but I will admit I liked Brotherhood Blade for PSP (Never played the sequel on PSP or Dark Kingdom). I'll admit the game was far from perfect, but I had fun with it personally. I tend to like hack/slash dungeon crawlers (kind of get addicted to them personally). ;)

My gaming taste are questionable to most (such as me liking FFVII: DoC, but not liking any GTA).

Well, I'm seeing a PS3 pop up most everyday now (online and offline), but they sellout by the end of the day usually. It will probably be early next year, when they'll sit on shelves. However, I could see a slight slowdown in PS3 shipments (around Feb./Mar.) to support the European launch.

Surprised seeing all these posts, I work at a Target in Illinois, and we haven't had PS3's in stock for more than 10 minutes. The most we've gotten at a time after launch was 6, but even the Wii sat here for 40 minutes after the second shipment, which was 18.

Yeah, I actually got the certificates on the 19th, If I'm not mistaken, they are good until the end of Jan.
I'm gonna take back the one I have from EB tomorrow, maybe make some gamers Xmas a good one.

No games besides Resistance = not worth it to me, I've got plenty of backlog until MSG4 comes out. If I see one at TRU, I'll get it with my AMEX coupon. If not, I'll use it on games for the 360 and Wii.

hmm i thought toys r us stores were supposed to get a good shipment of ps3's comin in before christmas, but I just went in to check and ask an employee but they said they didn't have any, and haven't gotten any recently. Maybe I need to go to a more well known store *shrug*
