How well does PS3 software emulation actually work? + save game issues?

CAGiversary!
I'm debating whether to buy now, or wait and hope for a $500 unit with a bundled game within a few months.

Backwards compatibility is VERY important to me, but I'm wondering if I actually need to worry? AFAIK, the software compatibility is supposed to be better than the 360's. But is there some actual comparison anywhere, or list of compatible games? Maybe I can just buy later and get something that works fine? (I *HAVE* to retain access to Final Fantasy 6-10, the Resident Evil games, Shadow of Destiny, etc.).

Also, have the save game issues with PS2/PS1 games been worked out? I know early on some people were getting save files corrupted, but I'd think that would be just a software issue that could be fixed by now.

Any thoughts? Gots to say, Drake's Fortune or whatever it's called looks cool, and I'd rather buy the PS3 version of games like Oblivion because of the MUCH quieter system and improved visuals.

If BC is make or break for you, which is sounds like it sort of is, it seems like you should buy now-- I would think the odds of getting a unit for $500 with bundled game is nearly impossible. (the thought is the 80GB bundle will be $599, and when it drops to $499 the game will go away too)

While everything I have read is the situation is much better than on the 360 it's still not 100% and it really depends on what you want to play... keep in mind any list of compatible games is the PAL versions and US compatibility is probably going to be slightly different. (probably not hugely different but I wouldn't assume the PAL list will be 100% the same as the US list)

Thanks. I've wondered too if I should end up babying this unit, since a future unit won't have hardware compatibility. Like not drag this one around with me, that sort of thing. Oh well. Still can't quite decide. If it included a game, or was $100 cheaper. Throw in Resistance Amazon!

I think there is still 1.8 or so million 60GBs out there with the EE chip. You have a few months atleast to decide.

Mine too - it "whistles" at me the whole time I play! I haven't had it for long, so I may try moving it around within my setup a bit to see if I can cut down on the noise.

One thing that I hope software emulation will allow future PS3's do is let us play import PS2 and PS1 games. One reason why the current PS3 can't play import PS2 games is because the EE chip is in their and still does the region checking. So imagine if Sony just maintains one firmware update for the PS3 that is used for all PS3's in the world. Then US PS3 owners should be able to play our Japan PS2 and PS1 imports. If software emulation gives us the ability to play these imports then I am going to wait.

Might want to check that. My PS3 is whisper quiet. It's hard to tell if it's even on.

Does it do it even when at the dash or playing DVDs or Playstation 1/2 games?

Yeah, that's how the one I used was. It's just SLIGHTLY louder than my SLIM PS2, and makes just a tiny, tiny fraction of the noise my PC makes, which is about 1/4 as loud as my 360 (which is a joke it's so loud).

If your PS3 is loud, I'd guess either it's defective, or it's set up somewhere it shouldn't be. It should have space on all sides, and shouldn't be sealed in an entertainment center (no systems should). If it's sealed up too tight it could be loud because the fans are having to ramp up to compensate. Ironically I've heard display PS3's that are much louder than the display 360's, which isn't an accurate representation of how they really are. THe PS3 is 1/10th the loudness of the 360 I'd guesstimate. (Cheapy made a recording one time of all three systems, and you couldn't hear the PS3 or Wii, and then the 360 sounded like a blender starting...)

Sony could restrict that still. I don't think doing it entirely software versus partially hardware would change that any. I mean if they let you do it on the software ones, they should open it up for the hardware ones too.
