I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

I just got back and bought season 2 of DBZ so yes DBZ is on sale. I would have bought season 3 but I didn't want to look like a huge dork stop judging me.

Yeah thats how it was at mine actually, and I went almost 2 hours after the store opened. It has an oddly large selection too but its really just lots of copies of the same stuff. Its about 4 full racks of shelves. Now that circuit city is gone and the bestbuy won't be carrying much anymore I guess I'll have to order online and hope my apartment manager doesn't just sit on my packages like usual.

I think I'm going to go back after work sometime and get some other stuff, I was hoping to get some Gundam or Tenchi but they didnt have it. :(

Yeah that is what I am hoping for at the store I will be going to, as I won't be able to get to it til the end of the week. Some of the downsizing is happening because no one is actually buying much anime at all at such stores.

Evangelion Platinum (Entire series in tin case): $49.99, this one rang up full price but they adjusted it for me.

Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 (entire series): $17.99

Basilisk (series): $17.99

Elfen Lied (series): $15.99

and then...

note: Blu-Ray disc do not count for the 50%, but fortunately, Akira doesn't obviously look like a Blu-Ray disc so they adjusted the price for me. After that I went to get some more anime on Blu-Ray (Freedom) but that time they saw the Blu Ray and had to ask someone about it...and they said they couldnt take 50% off of that.

Can someone nab me a Deathnote season 1 set and I'm also looking for Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya volumes 3 and 4 (prefer reg edition).

Mine had nothing all that great. I did grab Tsubasa season 1 for $25 and eyed a few other things but the employees were snippy and not helpful at all with my questions.
 
Well, I guess I was wrong, as all the anime at my store was 50% off.

I picked up the latest "Double Feature" Dragon Ball Z movie set, and the first set of Ouran High School Host Club for a friend.

There was stuff I wanted, but couldn't validate buying given my current financial situation/or lack of knowledge of the series- Baki the Grappler and Black Cat, for example.

Is the sale just going to be 50% off until Best Buy decides to move all the inventory to other stores, or is it possible that we'll see any further discounting?

ok interesting trip this morning...

I get there when the store opened... (thought they opened at 10 so I got there at 11 just by chance)... I go to the section and there are already 4 other people scoping out the selection. The kid most eager had driven from 40 minutes away and then proceeded to spend $600!! all the employees were like whispering to each other about it, it was kind of funny... that is a shit load of anime.

Anyways, I picked up the Witchblade series... and I looked around for anything I had heard of through this site or others that are supposed to be good. I'm not HUGE into anime, but loved Cowboy Bebop and just started Death Note (they didn't have the box set at my store)...

So, I picked up Fruits Basket and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series'... does anyone have any comments on those?... also, is there anything else that's really great that I could possibly go back and get? Samauri 7 looked interesting...

and that's awesome about Akira... I would have tried that as well, but they didn't even have a copy.

I picked up a couple of the same as BlackWolf:

Yu Yu Hakusho Seasons 1-3 - $13 each
Mobile Suit Gundam Wings Volume 1 - $20
Samurai 7 Complete Series - $19

Was really looking to get the Cowboy Bebop collection but they didn't have any at my store and I spent almost an hour making sure I didn't miss anything I wanted. They had signs up and they also rang up 50% at the register so no issues there.

As an added bonus(although no relevance to this thread), I was able to find a SFIV RYU gamepad for the 360 so thank you SPEEDY for getting me off my a$$ to check the store.
 
Well, there were a lot of excellent things. My car's alternator blew in the parking lot however, so I decided not to partake. Though I still almost bought Chevalier D'Eon ($25). My friend ended up with Bebop Remix, Howl's, and Black Lagoon season 1 ($18).
 
I picked up a few things from the Muncie, Indiana Best Buy:
Naruto Volume 9 and 10, and the Special Editions of Volume 11 and 12.

They still had a pretty good selection of stuff there before I left.

Picked up $300 worth, doesn't look like $600 worth of stuff, doesn't even look like $300. Oh well though, now no one can't say I don't have a decent collection. Might have to check back in later see if they get anything else back in, or might try my luck at some of stuff that's not in that section, just to see if I can smooth talk it out of them. Not likely, but worth a shot.
 
Northridge, CA one had no signs, but I asked and confirmed that the entire section was 50% off.

I picked up Fate/Stay Night for $24.99, and then got Nadesico movie ($7.49), Mushi-shi collection ($24.99), and Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki ($14.99) for my friend.

Unrelated, but they also had a PC version of Fallout 3 with the lunchbox for 50% off, so $35.
 
Interesting to see that a lot of their stuff seems to have been sent back. Was there right at open this morning. No Gundam or Eureka Seven at all. Bunch of other titles seemed to be absent from the shelves that I had previously always seen there.

Did pick up the first half of Ouran High School Host Club at least. Sad that they didn't have the second half there...
 
I jus got back from mine. I was the only 1, but then again maybe cuz its still early. Mine had no SFII or Wolf's Rain nor Samurai 7 :whistle2:(.Anyway I got:

Picked up season 2 and 4 of Dragonball Z. They never really had much of a selection to begin with and most of the good stuff was gone already. They had a copy of Howls Moving Castle, but I already own it. This was the Nashville West location btw.
 
Picked up Witchblade for $28.99. I was thinking about getting Devil May Cry Volume 2+3, but decided against it. I was also looking for Princess Mononoke, but they didn't have it (so I'll get it on Amazon for a few $$ more than the 50% at BB).

I like very very little anime so there was nothing else that was of interest. I would've picked up Escaflowne, but they did not have it.
 
I was the only one who seemed to care about the anime sale here in New Hartford NY. I got there at 20 minutes before opening and killed time at Petsmart until opening time. I rushed in and was the only one at the anime section for 15 min which is when I left. I wanted stuff like Death Note, Pokemon, Air Gear and Ah My Goddess, but I stuck to the ones I knew I would watch, Negima Complete, Negima?! set one, School Rumble 2-2 and Girl that Leaped Though Time (normal). I done my research last night on their online inventory finder and it was not worth going an hour out to the two other Best Buys in Syracuse, as they had nearly the same titles and would not have been worth the gas to get what I did want that was not found locally (Case Closed, Suzuka, Welcome to NHK, Burst Angel). I hope to pick those up when I'm in the area next Sunday for a CD/Record Show. I really wanted cheap Ranma sets, but those was not to be found anywhere in Central NY outside of one set that was about 2 hours away.

On a side note, I went to FYE and they have a new sale on animation, buy one get one free on select box sets (anime and USA cartoons), but stuff like Bleach and Death Note would still be more than than the BB sale, but ones like Simpsons, KotH, Robot Chicken and ATHF could be worth it.

I'm just wondering if BB eliminating anime would effect the amount of anime DVDs being made and thus returned back to the companies and thus eliminate the returns what are normally sold cheaply though secondary sellers. What I'm worried about is if this would effect the Rightstuf cheap-o sales as most of the sale discs I bought though them had BB stickers on them. I've not paid full price on anime in years because of these returns sales and it's a shame if anime will become a specialty product that never goes down, much like Doctor Who DVDs...it could be the death of new anime for me as I won't pay high near MSRP for my anime. I fear high prices will be the norm when there is no overproduction to keep prices low.
 
Just came back from my local Best Buy. Managed to buy Yu Yu Hakusho Seasons 1-3 for only $12.49 each. In total it was around $40, so I managed to save $35.

The only things that i missed were YYH Season 4 and Afro Samurai Resurrection for Blu-Ray. Trinity Blood Box Set was $35, Bleach Season 2 was $35, Black Blood Brothers Collection was $18, Vexille was $10, Negima was $25 (i think, forgot the price on that), and they also had various volumes of Claymore, Lelouch Of The Rebellion, Baki the Grappler, Full Metal Panic (also the second season was $40), MANY overpriced naruto seasons, and a lot of other junk.

Hartsdale, NY btw. The only thing i might regret is not getting Trinity Blood for $35.

You go to their website, type in "anime" and you'll see about 3500 titles. You have to look at each title you're interested in. I spent about two hours looking only to see that most of what I had wanted was not available in stores. There is no way to see a list of what the stores has.

Got Vexille on a whim, but was looking for the rest. Would have picked up some other Miyazaki films if they had had them, but no dice. Debated picking up a few other things, but I decided that $100 was enough to spend.

Also, I had to get them to adjust the price on Speed Grapher, so certainly look out for that.

When I first brought up my DVD's they didn't take the discount off. I had to walk one of the managers to the anime aisle and show them the little 50% off signs. I couldn't believe some of these prices though. I think some of them may have been marked down in the computer already, but with every dvd they did a price override and manually put in the 50% off discount for each dvd. So I don't know if I was lucky or not... Looking back in it now they probably REALLY were the prices, but either way still a great deal. I'm probably gonna go back tomorrow with the gf for more.

I would have liked to get more but my problem is I don't really know what is good or what will suit my taste.
 
The idea of cheapy prices is making this sale more tempting than it should. I keep going back and forth on whether I really need to buy anything when I've been renting from Netflix.

Do you guys go back to rewatch eps, or are you buying stuff you haven't seen? I can't imagine being thrilled with Death Note on the second and third viewings when the mystery's gone.

Still... herd mentality kicking in... errr

Is Freedom any good? Even at half off, it's not exactly an impulse buy.

I picked up Blu-Ray Afro Samurai, and the computer took off the discount automatically.

I went with what looked like I would like since I don't really know any of these outside of Bebop. I need Kirin to tell me which ones are crap so I can return them. ;)

I was sorely tempted by The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Would have gotten Haruhi, Fruits Basket, or Kodocha if I didn't already have them.

There was tons of anime, and only one other person bothered to look while I was there.

Also picked up a 1600 points card and the Watchmen pack.
