Yeah I should call them up again.
Found an article on this release (they are calling it a maintenance release) and it said they are improving the calculation used to determine the free space. Which falls in line with what the first CS rep I talked to said (guy was not very good). I'm not terribly psyched about how mucht that is really going to help. Sounds like they might also be rolling back in the option to record a show only at a specific time. (Talk about DVR features 101, these guys are nimrods...)
They've taken some time to update the Tivo UI, where it now shows you how much space a show is taking up, in GB as well as in percentage. It's steps in the right direction, though I just wish they had a bar gauge or something to show you total space used and total space remaining, in hours. I've suggested it to them numerous times when they've been soliciting for things to add to the service updates.
Someone offered me a cheap HD Tivo w/HDMI for $75.
Then I saw the monthly plan for 1 year. $16.95?
I seriously thought it was much cheaper.
You don't need to use it with the subscription, if you just want to use it like a VCR.
The older subscribers, like me, have $12.95 for the first device, and $6.95 for each device after that, without making any yearly commitment. You can get the box from Tivo itself and roll the fee for the hardware into the monthly commitment. $75 for a HD Tivo is a great price on one right now, assuming it works.
Yeah I didn't think Tivo service was all that cheap.
It's good Tivo is out there though or cable providers (1) probably wouldn't be offerering a DVR option at all and/or (2) if they did it would be way more expensive and even crappier.
It's not cheap, though it's light years beyond what the cable companies offer. I'd rather go roll my own DVR solution or MCE solution than resort to a cable company solution. I'd rather not have to have the company that provides me service own the box as well. Never know what they could do to you.
There's no way I can go back to gaming on less than 50" for next gen games.
I played Animal Crossing a few days ago on a 13" CRT just fine.
Looked great.
I think my next TV for my game consoles will end up being a 52" or 56" LCD. That's about the right viewing distance for my basement, and around the point where 1080p makes sense.
