I feel horrible right now :(
Thanks for the advice? No offense, but I have a legitimate question/concern here.
Atleast something is legit, can you imagine if someone walked in there and bought that to donate to make a wish foundation?
They may make you come back, I've never heard of anyone admitting to trading in a broken console before.

As I said, don't worry about it. They aren't going to do anything besides put it up for sale and eventually get it back as defective. GS can afford to lose the money.
I suppose. Well I'm going to go and try to sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning. If I still feel as bad as I do, I may call them and let them know. Thanks again for the better feedback of the majority of posters here. Have a great night.

I traded in a broken GameCube on Black Friday, it worked when it wanted to and I wanted to cash in on it while I could. Got my measly $15 credit and went in the next week to buy a game, while I'm checking out I hear another customer complain they bought a broken GameCube. Needless to say I bounced.
this is the best post i've seen in a long time, i love it, i've been needing something like this.
you're taking way too much pleasure in this person's misery..

The night of the trade, you may feel a slight sting. That's conscience fucking with you. fuck conscience. Conscience only hurts, it never helps.

Meh... you'll be okay.
1) 'fess up and see if you can get your system back
2) live with it and do some charity work...maybe washing the feet of the homeless?
Just forget about it OP, nothing bad will happen so it's not worth getting excited over it. I'm sure lots of people trade in broken systems.
I haven't traded truly BROKEN systems perse, as much as dying systems maybe.  And both were done @ Gamestop stores. Both were PS2 systems.

The first one, I opened and cleaned the laser, which was getting really weak and close to dying. I traded it in without a warranty seal on the back of the system, which I thought was a disqualifier for trading it in. I got like $100 for it since they had a promo where you traded 2-3 games with it and got up to $100 total.

The second one I traded was scratching discs, so I wanted to get rid of it post haste before any of my other PS2 games got scratched up by it. I could clearly hear it scratching their discs they were using to test it, but I kept my mouth shut and let them test it. I got about $80-$95 for it and never looked back on this transaction either.

Thing is, I think I paid maybe $50-60 total for the systems and controllers that I traded in, so I still came out ahead.

Would I do it again? You better believe it if I know the thing is on its way out and I'm gonna get some DECENT credit for it at least. Otherwise, I'll just use it for a doorstop.
I've never heard of anyone admitting to trading in a broken console before.
Uh, right, so anyway, Gamestop will not check the system again before they resell it, unless the employee is feeling virtuous later that night when they're not so busy. They're supposed to check it when you trade it in, but, as far as I know, the rules end there.

It's possible some kid's going to get it Christmas morning and it will brick. It's then possible that they won't be able to return it until it's too late, or that Santa will have lost the receipt. But it's also possible that a 57-year-old pedophile with gross semen-covered hands will buy it to lure in the unsuspecting youth. It could really go either way, so why bother thinking about it.

You've got two choices, regardless of whoever gets it:
A) You call in and tell them what you did and accept your consequences, which will not include jail time, are you fucking kidding me, or
B) You did a dick thing, you accept that you did a dick thing, and you decide to continue being a dick, which, obviously, means that you'd need to stop being a pussy. You can't be both! Unless you are anime.

Either way, you'll end up coming out of this a more mature person who has learned something from all this.

And dicks may fuck pussies, but dicks also fuck assholes, who shit on everything. If a dick doesn't fuck an asshole, you may wind up with shit all over your pussy and your dick.

Hahaha, not on my internets.

I say just let it slide. You did something stupid and you understand it. Just know if my 360 RROD's and I go back to GS (I have a warranty through them for awhile.) and I get yours.........well then God help us all.......:)

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. *coughIusedtoworkatGameStopcough*

GameStop just put the system on hold for 30 days and then resell it as an used system. If someone bought the defective system, they can take it back for a different one. The defective one will go back to warehouse and it'll get fixed (somehow). The company wouldn't punish at the employee. Also, they wouldn't track you down for that.

These things happen. People return defective system on a regular basis. So Don't worry about it.

do u feel horrible cause u got ripped off?
you traded in $240 worth of games, a $300 system and $50 store credit for a $350 system.
you just lost $240 dollars when u couldve just waited 3 weeks and used that $240 dollars to something else like NEW GAMES.

1. 360's can RRoD at any time, and since it is usually related to the GPU coming detached it could theoretically be triggered by movement (such as you bringing it to the store). My point is they really have no way of knowing you traded it in that way - it could have happened just then. So I really don't think you'll get in trouble.

2. Trading all that stuff for a HD upgrade (and, I guess, an HDMI system or whatever) seems very wasteful as others have pointed out. Did you at least use the 30% bonus credit coupon on those PS3 games?

3. If it doesn't work right away the person who buys it will return it. Doesn't GS have the extended return period for this time of year - so people have till early January or something? I saw that earlier in a game thread.

So I wouldn't worry about it. Personally, I'd feel sick and have trouble sleeping for giving up all that stuff just to get a new 360 when it could have been repaired for free!

Conjugal visits? Mmmm. Not that I know of. Y'know, minimum-security prison is no picnic. I have a client in there right now. He says the trick is: kick someone's ass the first day, or become someone's bitch. Then everything will be all right. W-Why do you ask, anyway?
To be honest, it made sense at the time. The games I traded in, I barely played. They are in practically new condition and I figured that since I don't enjoy them, maybe someone else can.
Did you put the games in the game cases? Or were they blank CDR's? I mean if you're going to be a scumbag, then go crazy. fuck the world.

Nah who cares. Its the employees fault for not checking it, its their job, regardless of how busy it was there.

Thats what they get for not checking it.. it will just get marked defective when it comes back.

The only way id feel bad was if it went to a kid on Christmas, and he couldnt play it cuz it RROD... then heads might be flying.

There are a lot of things I could write.

Like, how the OP isn't sorry, he just doesn't want to get caught... but I won't bother.

OP, some day someone is going to stab you in the eye with a pen. You won't understand WHY someone did it, but remeber this thread, and know deep, deep down that you deserved it.

This thread reminds me of:

Kramer: It’s a write off for them.
Jerry: How is it a write off?
Kramer: They just write it off.
Jerry: Write it off of what?
Kramer: They just write it off!
Jerry: You don't even know what a write off is, do you?
Kramer: No. Do you?
Jerry: No I don't!!

Since they're just going to exchange it for a new one with Microsoft and get a working one...and you gave them 4 PS3 games and $100? Instead of shipping it back when its covered under warranty? Hahahahahahaha.
I should be happy but I can't help but feel guilty everyone :( Well about 3 or 4 days ago my 360 got the RROD for the second time. I called MS and a coffin was sent. I did the towel trick and got my 360 working for 2 days and it seemed fine. Well tonight I just went to my local GameStop where some really great employees were working and I traded in my RROD console. I completely lied and told them everything worked great and because they were so busy they didn't even test the system out. Basically with trading in my console, 4 PS3 games, and a $50 store credit I had previously, I walked out the door with a perfectly new 360 Pro for $100.

I guess that this is my way of confession, but I was also wondering, could I get in trouble for something like this? I mean is this a form of return fraud or anything? I feel completely sick to my stomach just thinking of some excited kid opening up my console on Xmas day only to get the RROD. Can anyone console me and has anybody else done this? Sigh...
No, they won't care.

As a former Eb-games employee I can promise you that even if they can figure out which used 360 was yours, they're probably too lazy to do anything about it. Much less powerless.

In our store we had to test all systems being traded in, even if we had 25 people filling our store. Stop, drop, test.

"Take the money and run" my son...

If some kid gets your system with a RROD, who knows, maybe they'll get 1 day of joy, then at least Gamestop/EBgames is open after Xmas, so they can easily return and replace it free of charge, which is much, much quicker than the kid sending it into repair.

I did this when I traded in my Thompson drive XBOX 1, except I felt like a badass for getting 85 bucks out of a faulty system. You should feel like a badass, too.

What's the worst that can happen? Somebody buys your old system and returns it.

you're feeling bad and you should. that's called shame. it's normal, and you should accept it.

as to what you should do, i don't know, but since you don't like feeling the way you do, be sure to learn from this experience and apply that knowledge in the future. you know the "right thing to do" -- it's built-in.

good luck!

Everone regrets things. When I steal shit(from friends), it just doesn't work I need to give it back I feel like an ass. Why would I ever return a broken system? I probably wouldn't, i'm not a sketchbag who needs to get ripped off and feel like shit after returning a broken system. and why didn't you jsut wait for the coffin? My 360's been broken 2 times and i have waited. It's not that long geez

They probably didn't check it because he gave thema good deal and said "nah, it'll just waste this guys time and we might not get this good deal."

sheesh like people said, you got completely rammed on that trade in. You lose out on a couple hunderd dollars in all of the trade ins, you would have saved a bundle by just sending it in for repairs.

You should feel horrible for getting so badly hosed by trading things into gamestop for pennies on the dollar. Or nickels on the dollar or whatever, not by trading in a red ring of death system.

edit
so to sum up, you lose and they win, even though you traded in a bum system

I just wanted to update everyone about this.

I called the store this morning, talked to the guy who sold me the system, and owned up to what I did. I said I was sorry and asked if there was anything I could do to rectify the situation. I asked if I could pay a difference, or buy a one year warranty on the system for the next owner, or something, to make this right. The guy was extremely nice and said that it's all in the past now and there's nothing I can do. He said that he should've checked the system and that it will probably fall back on him. Of course this made me feel even worse. I told him to call me if there's anything I can do.

To clear things up, the 4 PS3 games that I traded in, I either already own on the 360 or do not play anymore. 2 of them I own and paid CAG prices for (sales, clearances, etc) and the other 2 I got for free from a buddy of mine who sold his PS3 a long, long time ago. I didn't play these games much at all, and neither did he. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder with something like this because I didn't get $60 of enjoyment out of each game, imo. So if you think I got ripped, then I can't change your mind.

I also don't appreciate it, even though I may deserve it, when people are calling me personal names or attacking me at a personal level. I'm not seeing the point of doing something like this. You call me a name when I haven't done anything to you? Who's the real jerk here? I'm not going to tell anyone that they can't say what they want, but I'm already down and now you're deciding to kick me? Class act people. Bravo. I already feel bad enough, but for the people who decided to use personal attacks, you too should be ashamed of yourself. I have not and will not resort to calling anyone a name for no reason. Unlike a lot of you who can hide behind a screen name on here, I actually manned up and took responsibility, no matter the consequences. At first, I didn't want to because I was afraid, but that wore off this morning. When I called I was ready to face any punishment that was handed down to me because I know that I did something horrible and ethically wrong. That's not the person I am and that's not the person my parents raised me to be like.

I do want to thank everyone else for their kind words and their advice. I truly took everything to heart and did a little soul searching myself. I still feel bad and I feel like I need to make it up to this store somehow.

for what its worth, i traded a gamecube last year for $50 to EB and it had a third party controller, i never tried using it, i got it at a garage sale as a throw in, but i cant imagine it worked too good.

I am a little surprised that you called back out of guilt and fessed up. Like i said i thought you felt horrible for getting hosed so badly on trading in the games. You could have saved a couple hundred dollars by not doing the trade in and just sending your system in for repairs. So you should feel horrible about that transaction, not for trading a busted system, but for them getting over on you.

No I never felt bad about getting "hosed" on this "deal" at all. Last night I felt guilty and afraid of some sort of punishment that was headed my way. After a restless night, I woke up feeling more guilty than anything else. I wanted to call the store at 6am because I was so guilty. The fear that I had, long passed in the night, and all I wanted to do (and still want to do) is make everything square with the awesome employee and the store itself. Now keep in mind, I'm not a big fan of EB/GameStop in the first place, so this is like me feeling sorry for fucking the devil.

But I still don't think I got ripped as hard as you all might think in this deal. By the way I DID use the 30% and 10% trade in deals that I found here. Someone asked that in a post before. Here's how I break it down: 4 PS3 games that were free, free, $19.99, and $29.99. The system I traded in was a gift and of course my $100 that I paid cash. So all in all my PERSONAL loss was $150 respectively. I'm not all that broken up about it because I've spent WAY more on really stupid things before in my life. But then again, if people still think it was a stupid deal, then I can't change their minds.
So you should feel horrible about that transaction, not for trading a busted system, but for them getting over on you.
i see no reason whatsoever why he can't feel horrible about both.
LOL, remind me not to trade with you.
haha, well I meant I only steal from my friends, I would never steal from someone else(unless they were douchebag's to me)
i see no reason whatsoever why he can't feel horrible about both.
To be honest, I really don't. I think what I did, completely nullifies the getting "hosed" part. But that's just my opinion I guess.
i see no reason whatsoever why he can't feel horrible about both.
fine. No, he shouldnt feel horrible about trading in a busted system. It took balls just to take in a busted system at all to GS, they usually check them, and if it doesnt work, they laugh at you and tell you, "no we wont take your busted up xbox".

So yeah he was shady for not being up front about it, they messed up too and are probably more to blame than the OP. WHen he called and the sales rep said he could get in trouble for taking the busted system, that is bunk, because he could have said it worked OK when he took it in, just pass the buck like most everyone in retail(hell i admit to doing that occasionally).
$100, plus 4 $60 games and $50 in store credit because you didn't have the patience to live without a 360 for 3 weeks?

so u got ripped off now your offering to pay gamestop for u getting ripped off.

u couldve just send ur 360 into MS and saved what $50 store credit, the 4 ps3 games u got credit for, the other $ you used towards your 360, the $ your putting towards a new warranty.

all that coulda got u more games for the 360.

Lol reminds me of the time my brother traded in brute force and they never checked the case. When we got home and saw Brute Force in the console it was funny. Lazy employees.

LOL

They can't do anything. GS was the one who accepted the trade. They should have tested it out, but they didn't, so it's their loss.

Seriously, stop being such a fucking pussy. Sure you're an ass for doing that, especially during this season, but get over it already.

If anything, you should be whining and crying about how ripped off you got. $100 + $50 credit + 4 PS3 games (@ $60 ea.) + a 360 core for a pro 360? Interesting trade. Why didn't you simply wait for your "coffin" to come, like a good little boy?

Ok everyone, I get it. You think I got ripped off. This is a moot and invalid argument to me and has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Let me make this perfectly clear so we can all stop reading these posts about me getting ripped off:

It's been made apparent by me that many of you are concerned with only the fact that I was "ripped" off by GS and not concerned what so ever about my turning in a broken console. This also makes it quite apparent that we all have a very different view of money and the value of merchandise. Paying $150 (which is what I really paid for, for the brand new 360 Pro if you read the previous posts) is not a big deal me. It's certainly no drop in the bucket, but it's also not breaking my bank by any means. I WAS going to purchase an Elite for $200 but decided against it. Could I afford the $200? Absolutely! But because I didn't feel like dropping another hundred on a system that has the same rate of failure, people have now taken it upon themselves to ostrosize me.

Let's do the ECONOMICAL math equation to my situation. The PS3 games in question were FREE, FREE, $19.99, and $29.99. The two I paid for were brand new and the free games were used from a friend. SO for 4 PS3 games, I actually paid (out of my pocket, in total) $50.00. I hope I haven't lost any of you now. The Core system I recieved as a gift. I didn't pay for it. Not one penny. If you got lost again, re-read what I just posted. Everyone keeps saying that for the 4 games it was a total of $240.00. I never paid $240.00. Again, I paid $50.00. Also what GS store, or any store for that matter, is going to give me FULL credit for any game?? As soon as you take the plastic wrapping off the case, the game has now depriciated by 50% or greater. Please understand this before posting your fuzzy math equations. I also used the 30% trade in credit coupon, along with my 10% trade in on my Edge Card.

For those still playing the home game and following along, I have only paid $50.00 out of my pocket for 4 PS3 games AND a Core Xbox 360 system. My grand total for the Xbox 360 Pro system brand new was $349.99 plus 8.1% tax. After the trade in of the system, and the trade ins of the games, my total with tax was $153 and some change. I had a $52 credit on my Edge Card (which was another gift, hence I didn't buy it with my own money) and when that was applied, the total I had to pay for an Xbox 360 Pro system was $101 and some change out the door. If you would like to add the "$50.00" I paid for 2 of the PS3 games then my total for a $350 Pro system was $150. However, if you want the "real economical" total, it was actually $50.00 in all. Why? Because I "saved" $100 by NOT buying the Elite system.

Now can we stop posting the posts about me being ripped off? Bottom line is, I don't care! I could care less if YOU think they ripped me off. That's not what the topic is about, nor what the "argument" is about. I have already resolved my situation and unless you have something intelligent, helpful, or insightful to add, then I don't want your two cents.

Thank you.

It's just funny that you actually felt bad for what you did despite that GameStop completely ripped you off.
haha, well I meant I only steal from my friends, I would never steal from someone else(unless they were douchebag's to me)
