I fixed the RROD myself

Droenixjpn

CAGiversary!
Yeah it's quite odd how youtube videos can actually be quite helpful. I learned and managed to fix my own 360 from the evil Red Rings of Death. I was plagued by it for a few months and finally decided to do something about it.

I decided I wanted to send it out to Microsoft, I checked the warranty and it said Out of Warranty, so I decided ehh whatever. I'll just fix it myself. So I started to look for a youtube video that I remember from when it first got the Red Rings of Death. I used that to fix it, took a few days due to lack of interest and other things.

I did all the steps and eventually it got One Red ring, then I turned it off and got the 3 Red Rings.. Hmm I forgot a step, it was to overheat your 360. So I had to reopen the 360 case and unplug the fan, and let it overheat until I got the Two Red Rings. After that I had to cool it with a fan. Once it got it's cooling time, I plugged the fan back in, and turned the 360 on. It had worked!

Now it continues to work, which has only been a couple of days but it still works!

If you want the video I used then I'll post it.

You get 3 years warranty from MS for RROD and since your just opened your system you just void it.

I realize I voided the warranty, but you do realize that I think the warranty was only included for the RROD. My warranty for the console was up.

Ditto.

Um... they would've still fixed it because you had an RRoD. Just because the regular warranty is up doesn't mean anything, the RRoD warranty is completely separate.

Yes, the warranty was probably up for everything but the RROD. But since your issue was the RROD, why not send it in?

It was to late for me to realize that the RROD had a extended warranty. It was opened already when I realized it, so I had to keep going.

Anyway I'm just glad it's fixed.

Lol, which hopefully won't happen. Sadly if it does I'll just say screw the 360. Microsoft should not have rushed the 360 to try and beat Sony. I just wish the 360 would not RROD.

Especially considering they would have swapped your XBoxs mother board and chip set with a new faster/quieter one. You should have at least called them and listened to what they had to say.

Glad you got it fixed though.

Thank you musha, yeah we were thinking of calling them, but once I checked the site and saw that it was Out of Warranty, I was thinking, man that sucks... Got to fix it myself.

I have learned from this mistake of mine, and will register any new consoles I get from now on.

If the 360 does break again, I won't be losing to much. Only game I have for it right now is Halo 3. I did have other games, don't get me wrong. I had sold the other games.

If you did it right it should go on for another couple years. I know someone who has fixed a handfull of RROD 360s and all of them are still running.

Exactly. The RROD is a three year warranty. Even if you had a launch system the warranty on one of those won't be up until Monday, IIRC.

From the way you described it, it sounds like the towel trick... which is a temporary fix. I hope yours continues to work though!

You don't have to void your warranty to wrap your 360 in a towel.

He probably did the X-Clamp fix, as that requires you to overheat the 360 afterward.

wow... well, it's going to happen so. good one.

I was thinking the same thing. If he didn't do the X-clamp then he still has a trick up his sleeve if it craps out.

Yeah i'll tell you guys how it goes. Hopefully I didn't leave a bad impression for myself amongst you guys and girls.

Actually, the towel trick is a void of the warranty, since it is intentional misuse of the hardware. That isn't to say that MS will know you did it or not.

I believe to void the warranty is to open up the console or modify the console from what it was intentionally meant to do.
I believe to void the warranty is to open up the console or modify the console from what it was intentionally meant to do.
What you believe and what is are both different. Intentionally putting your 360 through rigorous and abnormal conditions voids your warranty.

Xclamps seem to work pretty well atm.

I just sent mine in to MS since its still under there 3 year umbrella for RROD. no reason for me to put a clamp on a good system. when its out of warranty then it definitely is gonna be cracked open. Best of luck w/ your system.

hope it keeps working, if not u should read more online.

The X-clamp mod works great. I have had mine almost a year and not a single problem related to heat, but the DVD drive broke. I fixed that too, but I can honestly say, that if it is Microsoft's hardware, it USUALLY is complete crap. If something else breaks, there is absolutely no way I am shelling out more money when the system shouldn't have any problems anyway. Be happy you won't need to send your system in multiple times for the RROD, and fixing stuff yourself is exciting IMO.

You do realize that it would be impossible? Seriously though I just fixed my 360 and was happy about it working... Didn't try and get people complaining about it. Sorry guys.

don't listen to these guys. You learned a valuable skill. I've been fixing 360s for several months and making quite a bit of money on the side doing it. Check your local craigslist and see if anyone in area is doing it, if not you could have a valuable skill being the only guy in town who knows how to do it.

You could have done the exact same thing by leaving the sticker intact and wrapping it with towels.

I've got a friend with 3 dead 360s and xclamps on the way for them hopefully it does the trick. He offered to put one in mine but I passed since my launch 360 was under warranty through this month and i'd decided to just buy an arcade (half price with credit) as a spare. I'll deal with things when they break out of warranty.

EDIT: Nevermind lol you never mentioned the xclamp in your early posts. Just unplugging the fan.... I read it as you opened your 360 to unplug the fan. :)

:shame:

Just read the FAQ and send it in. You do NOT have the resources to completely fix a RRoD unit. You got a temp fix that will last you awhile. Hopefully you didn't break the Microsoft stickers other wise you are SOL with MS.

If this is really a temporary fix well at least it's working. If it can work until I get my PS3 for Christmas then yay!

I do not believe you guys trying to fill my head with doubts will actually convince me that the 360 will stop working. Would this be considered ignorance? I don't think so, it's just trying to stay positive.

Thank you wolve, I was considering that option. But I really can't take all the credit for this, as my dad helped me out with this quite a bit.

I give it til the end of the month before this guy posts in the RROD thread saying his 360 finally died. Instead of a sticker, he will get a cookie.

Yes you are being a fool thinking you can perma fix a red ringed 360 by yourself. After a month, your gonna either hate your PS Triple or use it only as a blu ray player, and end up saving your money for another 360.

I don't know what your friend does, but the whole point of the X-clamp mod is to remove the X-clamps...

From what I read about it, anyway.

actually it replaces it with screws and washers...
I haven't heard of a 360 getting RROD after an x-clamp fix?
You can still get the RROD and sometimes you can get freezing. It all depends on how skilled the guy doing the fix is and of course on how well your 360 adapts to the treatment. Not all 360s can be fixed with the xclamp, but it is a low number that can't be fixed.
You do realize that it would be impossible?
Yeah, those 5 times I thought I did it, I must not have. Just use a hairdryer to remove the sticker without ruining it.

And your 360 WILL red ring again. It's just a matter of time. ALL 360s red ring, not matter what mobo, drive or mod you have, it WILL red ring.

So say, your 360 RROD's now that you put in the xclamp. Would you just re-attach the warranty sticker and send it to Microsoft? I'm sure it's obviously illegal, but I bet people do it anyway.

Haha well I have no idea what it is he just said he was doing the x-clamp fix and waiting on a package to come in the mail with the stuff to do them. I assumed he was waiting on the "x-clamp" :D

Isn't the warranty repair a temp fix? Seems that the refurbs many people get back from MS only last a while before croaking again anyway.
