Hi guys, last night i spilt a drink on my un-warrantied laptop (fail!) and now need a replacement. Laptops today are expensive, so i am looking for a cheap ass but decent pc. I need advice on what i should get, FWI it is not intended for gaming use. I would build my own but lack the time. Thanks.

Laptops are not expensive, depending on what type of gaming you plan to do on it.

What is your budget and what do you plan to play?

Well, im trying to see what i can get for around or less than $300. Either another laptop or a desktop pc, for family use, not aiming for gaming. Bang for buck and would prefer a laptop out of the two.. I use to pc game but that was a lifetime ago.

You can surely game on any Laptop made after 1992 with little to no problem. The type of games you can play would be the limit.

For example I have Asus Netbook 900HD that I got for $50.00 back in 2009. It has over 9,000+ games on it from Platformers, Fighting to Shooters. Only 27 of those games are 3D and those games are using engines made prior to 2005.

Here is one for $229.99 - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1165010&CatId=4936

Here is one for $279.99 - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2166151&CatId=4962

Here is one for $299.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215168

Also - I do a lot of volunteer work for non-profits that have small budgets for tech. Every week I pick up 5 to 10 PCs and Laptops for free from http://www.craigslist.org and http://www.freecycle.org/.

This is what I picked up last week:

1 x Toshiba Satellite A45-S120 Laptop - Used - FreeCycle.org
1 x HP Pavillion Dv6700 Laptop - Used - FreeCycle.org
4 x Free Used Computers - HP Pavillion a710n - FreeCycle.org
4 x Free Monitors - 2 Used, 2 Unopened - HP mx705 - FreeCycle.org
1 x Free Used Printer - Canon MP495 - Craigslist

With the first 2 laptops the only problem they had was lots of spyware installed. They also needed a good dusting. The desktops had bad HDs but everything else was good.

If the old laptop is really toast, have you tried opening it up and cleaning it? You might be surprised at what you can do to recover a laptop damaged like this, obviously depending on the severity and location of the spill.

Keep your eyes on Woot, they often have good, cheap PC/Laptop deals. Today's is a pretty good one, has a high resolution and a discrete graphics card, blu ray player:

Only downside is it's a whopping 6 pounds and 17 inches.

if you have a lil bit of computer hardware experience you can buy a barebones pc kit from tigerdirect.com. go under computer parts and select barebones kits. thats where i got mine then by a graphics card later when you get the money.
I am now only looking for a laptop. So that narrows it done huh. What should it have to handle todays non-gaming use.
Non gaming - Non graphical use?

Just about any rig made after 1997 can do what you need honestly.

You can get a brand new 2008 model laptop for under $200 brand new from Best Buy in NYC. Not sure about your location.
Well i wouldnt say non graphical, just not todays demanding games. But i suppose your right.
What I meant was that you do not plan to work with graphics like photoshop or 3D rendering.
