I Got My Used Car (Update 5-28). *pics*

Smart Car base is at 12K. But of course, it's a smart car. Or if you want, Put a Hayabusa engine in it and smoke all your friends.

id go with the accord, or a toyota camry

nissan altima/maxima maybe...

i own a volvo s40 2001 and its very reliable. only some small stuff has been replaced, i got about 32mpg highway

Get something with good gas mileage... The Honda Insight is probably the best around since they don't make them anymore. Yet, I think the used price is somewhat artificially inflated. Some other cars with good mileage are the Corolla, Civic, and Yaris.

Hm, tons of Ford bashing.

I have a 1994 Ford Probe SE at 131000 miles and it's still running great. Although, it is essentially a Mazda under the hood.

seriously fuck the insight. hybrids dont need to be so hard on the eyes. I don't know if any male cag's own a prius or an insight but im sure you can't feel very manly sitting in that car. i have been in both in the auto show and it felt like the manhood was sucked out of me. save the environment in something that doesn't take your manhood imo.

VW is coming out w/ a Golf diesel hybrid. Its a golf so its not not that bad looking and @ the rated at 69.9mpg its definitely a great daily driver. Das Auto ftw.

I just read about the insight. Man that blew my mind, how can a car get 60 miles to the gallon? How come our current hybrid's today can't achieve this?

If your "manhood" is that closely tied to your car, you have bigger problems than fuel economy. Just like the assholes who drive the huge trucks becasue they fell weak in anything else.

i bought a 96 toyota camry in 2001 with 82K miles for about $9000. It was stolen in 04, beat to hell, found, repaired and i'm still driving it at 132K. I havent had a single problem with it. it gets about 30 miles on highway and 26 in town. i'd recommend it if your gonna be driving a lot for longer distances, just for the comfort, i had a smaller car mitsubishi and civic and always had a sore back after long drives, not so with the camry.

Also if you get a honda or toyota with over 60K miles on it make sure to ask if the timing belt was ever changed, it should be done around 60-70K. it costs around $250-300 hundred for the dealer to replace but if it breaks your engine will be fucked and you'll be looking at a bill 5 times bigger

Speaking as someone who drives a fairly "manly" car... ahem...

I'm starting to think maybe I should get an Insight instead. :]

Scions just look good, and Fits have almost no trunk space. But hey those are tiny little things when compared to what you get when you buy a Hyundai...

My Choice Accord/Civic 4dr then Mazada, the Toyota Corolla. Dependable, get good gas mileage and will last a long time, and the Hondas and Toyotas retain their value.

i like how it's a programmed response to tell someone "get a civic or accord"

good luck with that....in two areas that i have lived in buying one of them off the lot meant settling for something 4-6 years old...w/some miles on it!
You should pick up a new Civic Si. Slick look and 200hp. Lots of aftermarket support for Civics if you choose to mod it.
dude's looking for a used car under 10....that car might set him back 20!

sorry for the OT but...

@ PhrostByte

I will cry for you if you sell your EJ20. you will miss the sound of that boxer engine so fast. Personally im more of an evolution guy but bigups on the vehicle. Just dont sell the suby!! ><

OP - just buy a civic & post pics thx.

Didn't think it'd get this long. I'm still looking around. I see lots of overpriced junk. I'll update once I get something.

Also no saturn love?
Yes, it stands for Fix Or Repair Daily, IMO. Too many problems with them my family had.
LMAO** Love that quote! Ford stands for "Fix Or Repair Daily"

Yea dude.. well I'm not saying it's not my favorite car.. in all the owns I've owned. Actually it's probably my favorite in all the ones I've driven, and I've driven hundreds. Also aint it EJ25 engine?

The problem is gas mileage... it's getting to be a serious pain the wallet. :\

Saturns are made a lot better than they used to be. Let's put it that way..

dude for 10000 you can get a pretty good car. shoot 6000 and you could get a good car. I would say get a Honda civic. There reliable and get very good gas mileage. Parts are cheap to come by, but you probably wont have to worry about it too much these things last forever. Just make sure you dont get a riced out one. even if it looks nice on the outside it will probably fall apart as your driving away. I personally like the hatchback but i know its an acquired taste.1996-2000 was a good year for the civic and can easily be found for 5000. at least in my area.
I was making a funny, I'd be surprised to find a Sentra with 42k from 1998......the car was driven on average less than 5 miles per year? Or were you lucky to find someone who drove it until 2002 and then slipped conveniently into a coma!?

Regardless (I have a Mustang with about 21k miles from 95 so I know its possible, but didn't think a Sentra fit the description of weekend fun/impractical car).......anyhow, dollar for dollar, I could argue every point about a cars value and we wont get anywhere.

If we all lived in your world, we wouldn't need Ford or Chevy, just the Japanese right, because everything they make is perfect, yes?
Oh we definitely need Ford and Chevy: they're perfect examples of what not to do not only from a business standpoint, but also from an environmental one!

It's not that Japanese cars are perfect, they're just a hell of a lot better.
Ford sucks.

I've been in the car business for 6 years and can tell you that the absolute best cars, that hold their value the best, are the most reliable, and best overall cars are either Toyotas, Nissans, or Hondas.

There is really nothing to even argue about, the numbers (avg. mileage at death, avg. trade in value), reviews, and statistics speak for themselves.

My fiance just bought a 98 Nissan Sentra with 42k miles on it for $4,600. It's not the fanciest car in the world, but for the money, there is no better way to get from A to B. This car will last for 150k miles easy. Just watch the fluids, get your oil changed and they're fuckin beasts.
Soo...

Because you sell the cars and you make more (perceived value again) on Toyota's, Honda's, and Nissan's that means they are better?

Let me throw this at you. Its called supply and demand... the Taurus was one of the best selling cars in America year in and year out... huge supply so the value is lower, especially for a used car salesman... everyone has a Taurus for sale...

Now did they get to be the best selling car because they sucked? Or because they were reliable, and a good bang for the buck in commercially supplied ( lot of these), and family households?

Secondly... Domestic and Imports... the rumor is that imports break less and therefore cost less to mantain.... Well when a Toyota or Honda Alternator cost 200+ to replace, and a Ford unit cost $60 or so you could have the ford alternator go out 3+ times, and still barely break even with the one time it went out in an import... Lets not even get into Toyota (Lexus), Nissan's (infinity), and Honda's (acura) upscale parts costs.

Secondly price out repair hourly rates for the imports over domestic and see where you end up.. Ford and Chevy technicians charge less than the Nissan, Honda, and Toyota techs.

Again just because you sell cars and prefer not to sell Fords does not mean they are any less of a vehicle... it just means you have more sales competition with Fords, due to the supply being greater.

Incorrect...

Most Toyota's at least, have a non interference belt... if its a timing chain then yes your valves will be messed up. If they put a belt in then its a non interference type and if it breaks it will the the $20 at a parts store and some time, or the $200-$300 at the dealer, and a tow bill.

It is recommended to be replaced at 90-110k depending on the car.

Heres my work car. 2000 Toyota Solara, just put it up for sale. Loved every minute of owning it. We need four doors soon, so I am selling it now when coupes are more popular (early spring-summer):

2000 Toyota Solara SLE (Loaded, 2 door Camry basically)

I will also second who said dont get a civic (or any car) that has been modified and or "riced" out. No painted dash etc. This typically means it was driven hard, and possibly abused.

I get a kick out of everyone here pushing for at least 200hp etc. I dont recall that being a requirement at all....

there's no way your getting away with $200-300 for repair of a broken timing belt if the valves are messed up. it may be $20 at a parts store but somebody asking for used car advice on CAG is most likely not going to be doing a repair like that themselves. the 5 times estimate is exaggerated some yes, if the vales or piston get messed up when the belt breaks $200-300 aint happening.

I can't reiterate enough that if you have any Honda around 70k to have the timing belt changed. Last summer I owned a '94 Del Sol and Integra, and both had around 120k around. Driving my Integra doing about 55, and then it just stalls out. It was the timing belt, and luckily there was no damage done to the car. If there was I basically would have had to junk the car. The thing is, even if you wait til the timing belt goes, you still have to have the timing belt put on to see if there is any damage so you are paying for an operation when you might have to just junk the car.

ALSO if you are having your timing belt changed, get the water pump changed too. A water pump, just like a timing belt is cheap, but its the maintenance that is expensive in changing it. When people change your timing belt, they do the necessary maintenance where they can just get to the waterpump easily so its just rational preventative maintenance to have that done as well.
I’d like to spend under 10k. I want a reliable car with good gas mileage.
I don't know about where you live but here in Vegas there are brand new Hyundai Accents and Elantras advertised for Under $10k (the accents are usually around $6k) all the time...you can't go wrong with that....new car, fantastic warranty and great gas mileage

I am saying just the timing belt. At a shop is 200-300... If its a non interference belt like come on Toyota's and a lot of Domestics then even if it broke it would be non interference and therefore only be the cost of shop labor and the belt.

If you have a timing chain, or buy a Honda that has a belt that causes interference (damage). Then no of course its going to be 5x the 200-300 price.

If its an interference belt or most likely chain, then you don't wait to see if there is damage, typically there is just damage.

Yeah I heard that. Looks like a 04-05 wrx to me. The STi has a bigger hood scoop intake but i could be wrong. Impreza 2.5RS uses the EJ25, the STi engine is the turbo charged version of that(also called EJ25). WRX gets the 2.0L EJ20.

Any update AvidWriter? Leaning towards one car then another? updates :D

Well no not really. I'm still up in the air just waiting to see a good deal. I saw a cheap Hyundai Accent 02. About 5.5k. Civics seem to be all over the place as far as prices. I'm also leaning heavy toward Saturn right now but it seems harder to find them used.

I guess I shouldn't post my Del Sol with a L-ZELDA license plate then :)

Seriously OP I've heard nothing but great things about the Echo's. I know Toyota builds Lexus, but I heard the Lexus division built the Echo engine? At least thats what the used car dealer told me, so thats why I'm asking you....

And I've heard Echo's are hard to find now. I heard from one owner that Toyota even contacted him to buy his Echo back from him. But then again he is prone to exaggerate too. I should find more trustworthy company...

Just don't let this happen.

Intersection in front of my apartment building a few weeks ago. No actual accident - the girl turned the corner way too fast trying to beat the arrow and tipped her Echo over.

covering up your license plate is overrated.

No idea who built the engine. I know its rare as they stopped making them in 05 and most owers are holding onto them.

Cool. Just so you know, CAG loads the image automatically... clicking the spoiler doesn't "use bandwidth" as anyone simply entering the thread will use it.

No idea. We came upon it well after it happened, and got the story from one of the tow truck drivers after we came out to check it out.

Whats the expected gas mileage without me going to look? I am at work and edmunds is blocked here.

We just bought our Mazda 3 hatch on saturday. Glad to hear you got a toyota.
