I hate to ask but what's the best/user friendly WMV video converter?

I've been trying random recommended programs to convert some of my videos into WMV to stream to my 360, but all of them either make no sense or do alot of unnecessary things. If anything please post some that anyone here recommends...

Also, post free stuff please.

Here is the easiest method. You just drag and drop your video file onto a batch file and VLC will transcode the file automatically:

http://happybeggar.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=60&Itemid=2

Encode 360 offer more options but requires that you install alot of additional software (all free):

http://dcunningham.net/encode360/

You can also try installing TVersity and it will transcode on the fly and stream it directly to the 360. Its hard to setup, but once you get it setup it works pretty well:

I tried Tversity a while back and that thing was a bitch to setup... and even then it didn't do what I wanted. Huge thx :)

WinAVI Video Converter

Step 1. Click on Menu

Step 2. Highlight "Format Convert", then "Any to WMV"

Step 3. Browse for file you want to convert, select it.

Step 4. Select where you want the converted file to go.

Step 5. You're done

Pretty easy.

I use encode360 and it takes a really long time, how is TVersity? I know the downside is no fastforward/rewind. Is it worth it?

I have been trying to use tversity and have spent probably 2 hours dinking around with it. It's easy to get my 360 to see all the files, and music streams fine.

But I've yet to figure out how to get any video to not pause all the time, unless I lower the quality down to something like 400 x 300.

i know on transcode360 there is a buffer that you can set from 1 to xx seconds for the video...also are you running a wireless g network or better? or are you directly connected? also..is anything else on the network doing anything at all while you are streaming video? make sure the pc has nothing else running in the background? also make sure you have indexing turned off on your pc (it is on by default in windows XP) ... go to right click my computer, explore...then right click on your hard drive and click properties...at the bottom uncheck allow indexing...this makes the pc constantly access the HD to index file so that when you go to look for something ir finds it faster...kinda like FindFast in previous versions of windows

i use transcode360 to stream avi movies to my 360 from my pc.....it works perfectly...no guess work no nothing....install it on your pc....run it...then in the media center on the 360 select the video you want to watch hit info on the remote or Y i think on the controller, scroll down to "MORE" and then click Transcode360......WHAMO! streaming movies!!!!!

For me, yeah. You're at least able to pause, so if you have to step out/take a dump/answer the phone/whatever you're able to hold it until you're done.

Works great for me.

i use cucusoft. not free but im sure ut can be "found" somewhere.

i use it mostly for my zune, but it has enough options that i can use it for the 360 as well.

Yea I've used TVersity in the past and I agree its a monster to try and figure out and plus I didn't like my PC which I game on being a server, the program took up too much in the background. I also tried VLC but its all manuel so it works but its a pain to do for every video you want to watch. I'll try Transcode360.

For those Mac users out there, I've found VisualHub to be a godsend. It even converted the quirky 720p .mkv files I threw at it. It can handle assloads of other formats and it only cost $23.32 :applause: I just dump the .wmv it makes on a flash drive and pop it into the 360's USB port. So now I'm finally caught up on this season of Rome.
I purchase non-game software almost never, but this was worth every cent.

(and no, I am in no way affiliated with the makers of said software)

well i like MSes own converter
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/features.aspx

but the simplest way is to just use the RCA cables that come out of the back of your computer and just play it from your PC. no conversion needed.

monoprice.com has some cheap extender cables if it wont reach it normally.

if your video output doesnt have RCA output, you can get a cheap video card that will do it. almost any will. the x1300 is decent. look on newegg.com

Just want to chime in and say that I've had lots of success with WinAVi Converter, quick and painless.

While we're on the subject, anyone have any good programs which convert WMVs into AVIs/Divx/Xvid? WMV doesn't always play nice w/ some of the players I use, but the few I've found either crash or the sound is horribly off.

Well I used TVersity but I don't like having to have a server running to watch videos, I also game on this computer and I don't want any more background programs running than there already are. So I tried out CinemaForge 2.0 and I'm glad its free because if I bought it I'd be pissed. None of the videos work for my 360, it sees them but don't play. What options do you use to convert your videos with CinemaForge 2.0? I'm going to try transcode360 when I have a chance.

If your output target is Divx and you don't want to do any elaborate things like rendered transitions, the recently released Divx Author is excellent. It's a fansubber's dream. It provides all of the essential NLE functions with a nice subtitle editor and menu editor to create standalone Divx discs. Because they leave out all but the essentials it's a very small download and performs really well. (I use Pinnacle Studio 10 for more elaborate stuff. The Magix apps are horrible, especially on audio syncing.)

It isn't free but I found very worth the money, especially using the 30OFF code at the time of purchase. That gets it under $30. There is a 30 day trial version available for download. The only missing feature in that is the inability to save projects. You have to do your edits and output int he same session.
Don't forget Windows Movie Maker! It's already on your system if you're running XP or later, and it's actually pretty decent.
Ha it takes forever and I don't want to create a new project everytime I want to convert a video.
