It hit me this past weekend when I rushed out to buy Shadow of the Colossus for 14.99 at Best Buy.

I know that we've discussed this many times before, but how on earth can someone play every game they buy?

I've beaten almost 100% of the games other than PS1, PS2, GC and GBA. What is the best method for figuring out what to keep and what to sell, or what to play and what not to play?

Step 1: Look through your games and find the ones that you don't give a shit about owning, whether you've played them before or not. Sell those.

Step 2: Look through your games and figure out which ones you bought cheap that you usually wouldn't have given a second thought. If you haven't played it, sell it.

Step 3: Of the games you haven't played, start figuring out which of those in similar genres are better in your opinion. i.e. If you aren't a big fan of FPS, but you have five or six FPS games, do you really need all those? Only time this should be skipped is for genres that you just can't get enough of.

Step 3.5: Don't keep games that other people like. I had Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 for GC. Everyone loves those games. I suck at them, and hate them. I kept thinking I should keep them because a) people visiting will like them or b) I will like them if I keep playing them. Not gonna happen. I'm just a loser who doesn't like therefore doesn't own Super Monkey Ball.

Step 4: Look through your games and figure out which ones you've played but will never touch again. That's the hardest one, because we all say "Well, I know one day I'll play it again." I haven't yet gotten to this step.

Feel free to add on to this or critique. I've only gotten through about half of step 3, but it did free up space for about 20-30 games. Still should have dumped a hell of a lot more.

Definitely go through the advice on Botticus's list. Earlier in the year I forced myself to stop buying games for awhile. I focused on what I already owned for about 4-5 months. First I went through the sealed games and picked out ones I wouldn't miss, while playing through the ones I already opened. Several games I just didn't have a desire to go back to play. I also realized things like okay do I really did hot shots golf, mario golf, outlaw golf 2, and tiger woods golf. I bought them all for $5-10 and figured its worth it at the price, but I really only needed one golf game to hold me over.

One other item to consider is to you have some games worth alot you aren't keeping for the right reason. If you don't love the game don't keep it. Alot of people get caught up in the fact a game is worth alot. For instance Disgaea is a great game, but if you didn't even like FF tactics why keep it...

I think I speak for everyone on here who doesn't collect everything. Keeping up with you games goes on forever. Couple of sales hit and you can get behind real quick. One thing that helps me is keeping my collection seperate from items on my tradelist as well.

yeah they made a bunch of games gh versions but bb is selling the regular versions of many of those games at gh prices. i got sotc for 20 ( before i heard about any other discount for it) and its the regular version.

and as far as havin too many games i think you can especially if youre just buying them because theyre cheap and ot playing them. i only buy the games that i wanted to play or own but thought full price was too much to pay. and i either pick one to focus on and beat or i play them all at diff times till i beat them all. hell right now i was playin ultimate spiderman, the hulk and pop 2 thrones and dmc3 but after picking up sotc im going to just focus on it.


theres no rush to beat them but in the end i do beat most of them and especially sicne its summer and the pickings are slim its a good time to gather up a number of games you were curious about on the cheap. once the wii and ps3 come out people wil start to be more discerning about what they buy with prices for games going through the roof.
 
186? Thats a problem? My personal collection is approaching 3000. I have a problem. I am starting to dream about just selling it all and buying a new car though.
 
if you haven't picked it up in the past 4 months (more or less, depending on size of collection, type of game, etc.), its fair game
 
186 doesn't sound like too much compared to a lot of folks here, but now's as good a time as any to clear out the stuff you aren't ever going play for whatever reason. I wouldn't even bother trying to figure out what games might be worth something later on, too, as there's no way to know for sure.
 
My brothers and I have have gone through our collection and cut it down by over one hundred in the past year or so.

We kept the majority of the older games (NES, SNES, N64, PSX) because the vast majority wouldn't go for much and we keep them in containers so they are not in the way or anything. The games from this current generation were what we mainly got rid of.
 
I've got max 80 or so titles so I guess I don't really have to make those kinds of decisions. Even then, I look at my cabinet and wonder how many of those I'll ever play.
 
Well, I can't help you on which games you should sell (I'm a pack rat, so I don't sell anything, and so far, I haven't regretted that decision).

On what to play, I think people get too tied up in what to play. Just look through the collection, and what pulls you to play it. I own games to enjoy them (even though it is fun buying them). Also, gaming is enjoyable. So, I play what I want to play.

Case in point, I have bought about 20 games over the past month. So, even though I haven't finished any of them, over the weekend, my past Morrowind addiction started calling to me. So, I put my time into that game, even though I have tons of hours in that game over the years, and tons of unplayed games sitting on my shelf.

Also, I think people get the feeling you have to play the game soon. If you got it cheap enough (especially $5 and under), you can let it rot on the shelf for awhile. If you even play it, you'll likely get your money out of it.
 
Take a look at my sig. I have 600+ video games and I still keep playing them. The worst part is, whenever I buy new games, I keep playing them less and less, due to them being mixed up with other games I own. The worst part is, I probably won't be getting much better, since there's so much I want for the rest of the year, and there's no way I'm going to have time to play it all.

One thing really bad is, I only had my PSP for around four months, I went from 0 games to 27 games, during that time period. :|

I try to cut back, but it doesn't work. Well, since I don't have many friends, I can't exactly play a game at a friend's house or something, since the only way I can play games is if I own it. Maybe whenever I get a gf (Probably never will, but I hope), she might get me to cut back. Otherwise, I'll just keep spending. :(
 
Over 100+ games? Thats a lot, I have about 20 and I've beat them all 100%, I only buy a new game when I finished my previous games. And if my memory card were to corrupt I would like die.
