yeah my dvd player won't work anymore except only for mp3's. Everytime I put in a movie or anything no disc reading.


can anyone help me find a good or great dvd player.

Unfortunately, you are not stating how much you are willing to spend.

However, if you want a good, dependable DVD player why not try the Philips DVP-642 which is available EVERYWHERE (Wal*Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, et al) for about 50 bucks or less.

Great player.

As a side note, this player can be made Region Free via the remote. So you can get DVDs from around the world and play them on this baby.


If you want to spend more for a player, let me know but this qualifies as an excellent player at a great price.

I've only ever had two Dvd players, an Apex 600A I bought 6 years ago which worked the last time I used it and Currently I use a Sony NS575p and have had it almost 2 years with no problems. Would probably used the Apex till it died but it got left in California for a while so I had to buy another one.
 
I have the DVP-642. I use it for playing divx files (mainly anime) I notice the occasional quirk like the player turning off every once and a while usually after watching alot of files. Its a great player so far. Plays next to every format I throw at it.

Sounds like a possible firmware issue.
 
I've got a Toshiba SD-3990 for DVDs and DivX files, and it's working very well. But really, all of the next gen systems will play DVDs pretty well, and two of this generation's play them just fine.
 
Hmm ill google later and see about firmware updates speedy. I know you can just burn it to a cd and install them on player.

And yes the phillips plays vcd's.
 
I am sure glad dvd players cost alot less than they used to... my first stand alone player was a bargain at the time at $350... damn, must be 10 dvd players at least in my home at the moment, including gaming systems
 
Philips DVP-642 +1 , This will play anything you can throw at it. But that Deal at Cosco is sick I wish I had a costco near me :whistle2:( . I have a Cyberhome DVD 655 upconvert I got from Walmart for 69.99 its ok, the HDMI output to 480p is good but the upconvert not so good.
 
I think the DVP642 may be discontinued (at least, it's been replaced by the DVP5140 at Wal-Mart)

I picked up the 5140 a couple weeks ago, and it's been a good player so far. All I've really tried aside from store-bought DVDs is divx files on a burned DVD so far, but I had no problems.

It's the same price (unless you can find a DVP642 on clearance), as well.
 
I heard about DVP5140 but am still far happier with the DVP5960 I got at BB just over a month ago instead. HDMI output, upconvert, and USB port. ^_^

Either way avoid the DVP-642, it's really really outdated now and the newer chipsets used in Philips current line of DivX capable players are far more compatable than the one used in the old 642.

I too own a 642 and it's a decent player. However the only thing that irks me is that the player itself can get loud. Since I watch movies in my room and my aunt sleeps next door I have to keep the volume low. It's kind of like a disc/dvd running from the computer.

If you're ok with that then cool. BTW did anyone have problems running .ogg on their player?
 
.ogg is the ONLY file i have not been able to play. Then again I have 1 .ogg file total so it doesnt bother me. I got the 642 on sale last year for about $45 so no complaints. I'll have to check out the other DVP players for upgrading some time next year.

I picked up the Toshiba last week and it's great. I'm not using the upconvert as my tv doesn't do hi-def, but it's played everything I've thrown at it. Better yet is the fact that it'll read DVD-RW discs - once I'm done with a show, I wipe it off the disc and put something new on. Who needs cable?
 
might want to check out the Oppo players for high quality at a good price, with unbeatable customer service. they are all the rage at the AVS Forums, which knows a thing or two about tech.

Those of you with the Philips DVP-642, is your player still working? It's going to be $29.99 on Black Friday, but according to Amazon reviews, the player is really unreliable and dies within 6-12 months.
 
Hmm, I'm still hesitant. There are hundreds of reviews on countless sites and forums where people complain about how bad the player is. There seems to be a defective part that affects almost all owners eventually. I think I'm going to keep looking.

I want something that will last more than a year and that is $60 or less (preferably less). It also needs to play somewhat scratched BBO/Netflix rentals. I don't have an HDTV, so I don't need a lot of expensive features, and I'm only using legit DVD movies, no burned discs.

If you want something to last more then a year spend 90-100. I have a Sony NS575p it's almost 3 years old and still works fine.
 
Well I ended up buying the Philips DVP5140 on sale at Walmart for $50. Decent price and I haven't heard a ton of bad things about it, like the 642 model. Strangely, the box had no manual or warranty papers inside. Did they sell me a used player as new?

Might have been a display model.
 
I'm going to contact Philips and/or Walmart. If I was supposed to get a manual, warranty and other papers, and I didn't, then I expect some kind of open-box discount. The reason I chose this particular box is because the only other box was all banged up and this one appeared to be factory sealed.

That's Walmart for you. I usually avoid stepping into that store, but you can't resist when something is on sale.

My first DVD player was the first one on the market it was a
Phillips Magnavox DVD player with the old school shuttle/jog
knob on the remote. It was $650 and still works to this day.
It's rather heavy and outdated but plays perfectly still.
 
I have an Apex 600a I paid 189 for floating around somewhere last time I used it worked. I left it in California and ended up buying the Sony. I havn't tried using it since I got it back.
 
I bought both the Philips DVD Player (DVP642) and the Philips DVD Player with HDMI (DVP5960). I had a $15 off 100 coupon at Circuit City plus both were on sale a few months back. I brought the 642 up to my parents summer home cause they needed a dvd player. Works great and well worth the money plays everything. I have the DVP5960 in my bedroom. Two complaints are its kinda loud when playing and that the remote it comes with is horrible I think. But you cant expect much from a $60 dvd player.

Havent tried playing files on my computer so dont know how well the usb port works. But I burned a few dvds and they played perfectly. Both were well worth a price of what you will pay for some dvd sets you will buy.
