I need some surround sound help!

I received the Sony HT-DDWG700 surround sound system as a gift for Christmas. I have my PS3 hooked up to it via the optical audio jack, and selected the bitstream options on the PS3, but when I play a game on it, it only outputs 2 ch. PCM audio. Can anyone suggest a way of getting to play the 5.1 surround sound that I want it to?

Try unselecting the 2 ch. options and just leaving it at the 5.1 options at the top. I don't remember if some are automatically selected for you or not. I'm interested in this as well because I got a Sony receiver over the weekend and I'm noticing it will flash "3/2.1" on the screen when I start games up. I could have sworn it was working Saturday night for me when I kicked up the MGS4 demo and listened for gunshots/explosions all around me.

That's the problem. When selecting the optical output for audio, it automatically selects two 2 ch. PCM options that cannot be unselected, and for some reason the receiver is prioritizing that.
