I have never bought any Surround Sound Speakers and I want something that I can use at the same time for both PS3 and xbox 360. Any suggestions? Also, what cables or additional equipment do I need to buy?

Thanks for the help!! :applause:

i have this setup. these are the things you will need

component switch box from radioshack - $15
2 male RCA to 1 mono jack Y splitter - $7

both sold at radioshack.

then take your pick from any set of computer speakers, i recomment the klipsch 5.1 system. its expensive but worth it if your serious about it.

whats your budget?

If you're serious about it you wouldn't be running surround speakers through analog connections.

OP needs a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver.
My budget is $500. I was thinking about getting this:

Good choice. I'd reccomend Yamaha or Onkyo HTIB. Although HTIB is definetally not the way to go...

But if you get one of the ones I mentioned you can upgrade the speakers and subwoofer, because the Recievers that come with Yamaha and Onkyo are really great.

I'm planning on selling my HORRIBLE HTIB (Sony one, UGH) and purchasing a Onkyo 7.1 (I might prefer 5.1) and then down the line switching out the fronts and backs with Infinity's dual speakers. And eventually powering up my subwoofer to something more beefy.

Hope that helps.

I purchased the 5.1 Onkyo Home Theater System (HT-S590S) at CC with the $40 off $199 coupon a couple months back. It's not the BEST HTIB but for the price you can't expect too much out of it. The only problem I have with it is that the subwoofer is kind of weak. Even at the highest levels, the bass isn't quite good enough. I'm no audiophile, but that was the only glaring weakness I saw in this system. The setup was quick and easy to follow with a provided quick set up poster. So if you're on a tight budget, I'd suggest these, and upgrade later once you know what to expect.

You'll also need to get a couple optical audio cables for the 360 and PS3. I was able to purchase a couple Madcatz branded ones at EB/GS for $10 each. Although I wouldn't recommend Madcatz to anyone, it's better than paying those ridiculous prices at major retailers like CC or BB.

I was wondering about that.

Is there a big difference when you switch to Optical Audio Cables? And the 360 doesnt have an Optical Audio port does it?

ALSO, does the Onkyo have two ports for OA? Or do you use a splitter?

Thanks. I switch between my consoles and TV ALOT so I constantly switch. I have the worlds shittiest switcher and they all use the red/white plugs. Its cheap plastic and just switches between my 4 devices (soon 5).

I would recommend the Onkyo HTiB if your budget is around $500. I personally pieced my Home Theatre together. I always like buying a separate receiver....especially with the PS3, you would probably want HDMI switching. You will want 2-3 optical inputs also. What other things will you be hooking up to this? Standalone DVD player? Cable Box? Anything else?

HDMI switching capabilities on a receiver at this time will instantly up the receiver price into the 1000+.

I'd recommend buying a separate stand alone HDMI switcher at this time vs. a receiver w/ HDMI switching.

DTS/DD 5.1 is absolutely key for good sound. a 6.1 or 7.1 receiver isn't totally necessary at this time, as very view things actually utilize it. I think I have a handful of dvd's w/ 6.1 in my collection. Gladiator that came out a while back being one of them that strangely actually had 6.1.

can anyone point me to best place to get a optical audio switcher or w.e its called.

unfortunately bought a htib ( i thought it was the best value) .. while it sounds quite good its limited to only 1 optical audio input...

it would be nice to have my 360, ps3 (eventually), and pc connected via optical

The Onkyo HTIB I described earlier is my first surround sound system ever, and I currently use it for my PS2 (PS3 later), 360 and Wii. The ease of use between switching through consoles is a breeze and it does everything I need it to do.

The 360's optical audio port is located on the component cable plug (the part you plug into the back of the 360), and the PS2's optical audio port is in the back somewhere. The Onkyo does have two ports for optical audio (you won't be needing a splitter), and since the Wii doesn't support optical audio, all you really need is two. In addition, for good measure, the Onkyo system has 3 component video inputs which you could potentially use for the Wii, PS3, and 360.

Optical audio cables aren't a necessity, but it makes connecting everything a hell of a lot easier since you'll only have one cord running from each console (with the exception of the Wii) connecting to the Onkyo receiver.

Oh and if anyone is considering on picking up the Onkyo S590, there's also a $5 pricegrabber rebate.;)
Ooo, thanks for the link.

I wish they had a HD picture of the back...

And what is with the $5 mail in rebate?
Go here for a picture of the back of the Onkyo 590s. Just click on more images, under the picture to your left, and click on the fourth image. It should be good enough to see what you're looking for. As for the $5 rebate, Shipwreck explains it thoroughly here.

Hey thanks alot. You're very helpful.

Ooo, it has a 3 Component Switcher? How does that work? I never understood a switcher on a Audio Reciever. I'm guessing its like a normal switcher. Is it any better?

I've seen that image before its a little blurry. I'll go check it out at CC or BB tomorrow. Most likely pick it up.

I desperately need a component switcher ect.

How is the Subwoofer? (I'm guessing you have this setup) Does it allow for upgrade? AND most importantly can you adjust the bass?
Not true. Here is a sony receiver for under $400 that does it, and sony also sells a HTiB for $500 that does it as well.

Granted you can get a better receiver, but those are great for the price.
I actually have that model. Got it on Black Friday and got a 150 gift card with it from BB. While its not that sweet ass 1000 dollar Yamaha or Onkyo, its still a great receiver. It replaced a 98 model Sony STR-DE925. I'm glad I was able to get it (very early xmas gift), as my old receiver, the left rear speaker hadn't worked in a couple of years.
How much added Sound quality do digital cables bring?
To be able to get surround out of the Xbox, 360, PS2, PS3, the only way is getting some fiber optic cables. Cheapest place is monoprice. Or as another CAG said, you can get 6 ft cords for 10 bucks at EB/GS

I got an optical cable at Best Buy for 34 bucks haha.

Im gonna buy one off monoprice then return the cable I got at Best Buy.

How come those Fiber Optic Cables look completey different then the ones I use? And why is there 2 ends?
Ugh I cant find Digital Optical Cable's...

I want to return my 30 buck one and buy two really cheap ones. But every place has these weird Fiber Optic Cables with 4 inputs... Where can I find one like this?
