Uhm... well let's see... that doesn't sound like an issue with the speakers. I want to blame it on your Xbox failing to read Gears of War properly, because a receiver shouldn't be causing noises like that in specific situations like what seems to be happening to you. If memory serves though, I had very minor crackling happen when I brought up the score menu in a multiplayer match... so maybe it's just the game.

Either way, I wouldn't worry.
 
Yeah it's just annoying. I thought at first the levels of sound being sent to the rear speakers spikes and is too high but nothing else does it. Maybe there's something going on with the wiring. Mass Effect has for sure been louder than Gears and causes no popping.

That Stereo headphone cable that comes with the VGA cable for 360 is shite too. It takes a lot of fiddling to get it plugged in just right so sound gets through in stereo. I think a real cable that turns the Red/White into a headphone jack style would be better, probably?

Hmm... if the cables don't seem to be plugging in right, then yeah, that solution seems like a good idea. Of course, if your receiver supports anything like coaxial or optical, that's the clear superior choice, but I suppose you already knew that.

Those bose look decent, but as you know with bose you pay for the name not really the quality.
I would look into one of those onkyo HTIB, but you have heard these things first hand so I dunno.
 
He had a $900 Onkyo driving those, so take that into consideration. They sounded great. He has so much money. He has a 58" Panasonic plasma that replaced his 55" Sony LCD after 1 year. And he used a ball mouse and old ass Microsoft keyboard up until earlier this year. WTF? He uses his PC all the time.

As far as my pimp setup goes, I'm rocking my 12 year old KLH blasters from Best Buy. They are pretty decent. I have some lesser quality, but same size KLHs for the surround channels that I picked up for $20. Both sets with 8" woofers, 5" tweeter. And two Sony bookshelf speakers for my center channel. Top it off with a 10", 150 watt Jensen sub, and a Sony 6.1 receiver and you have a certified, ghetto rig. Will be upgrading it when I move. I have the Logitech 5.1 X520 for my PC, and they sound good for the $45 I paid for them.

Now here's what you do: Get a good stereo pair. It's not surround, but I promise you for a fucking fact, quality over quantity is the way to go. So what's quality? These. I'm running this set in my 5.1 along with a ridonkulously good sub, and its absolutely ruined me for theaters. Now, a stereo pair of those costs $150, so even if you're broke as a joke, or lick Jesse Jackson's nuts, you can afford these. Pair these with a good receiver like the Onkyo 605 (I think that's reasonably priced) or maybe an Onkyo that's a step below, and perhaps with a sub (I'm not sure what to recommend cause I don't know the exact budget) and you'll be blown the fuck away.

With Bose, you're paying almost entirely for the name -- the speakers are themselves are trash. They're really little more than budget speakers marketed as HT enthusiast speakers to people who don't know any better (which... is essentially 99.9% of Best Buy shoppers, so a lot of people.)

Serious question for you people, because I'm fucking confused: Do all college kids have nothing but dogshit? Coz seriously, the nicest setup I've seen in any room at my school is a 32" CRT with a 360. I've never seen a PS3 on this campus, a desktop PC newer than 4 years old, speakers that don't say "Logitech", an LCD TV... really, anything nice. Everytime I visit a different school, it's like instantly stepping above the poverty line. It doesn't make sense since this is pretty much a school full of rich, overprivileged kids, so is it just my school, or is the plague found in every school out there?

Edit: Now that I think about it, there's far too many people who phail at comedy too... seriously, "your mom" jokes? On a regular basis? fucking ridiculous. There's gotta be something wrong.

That's basically the story I've heard all these years about Bose. I just wanted someone's opinion on them. I'd rather buy some other speakers like the one's you linked to. That Onkyo 605 looks nice as well. I need to hook myself up with that.

And from what I've seen, College kids do just have some shitty ass setups. I blew my motherboard up a few months ago and had to send it in. I had to use a relic Celeron 450MHz with 192 MB RAM for two weeks and it drove me insane at how slow it was. I don't know how people can use old computers. And usually, the fucks don't even have a clue about maintenance, so they never ever defrag, get tons of viruses and spyware. I have to fix a friend's bother's laptop about every 6 months because they fill it up with viruses and spyware. I put antivirus and anti spyware on it, but they shut it off.

I think that it's because their parents won't let them take such value pieces of equipment out of their homes and into a dorm. Maybe they just leave such shit at home, but I sincerely doubt it.

In dorms? nothing more than the occasional small LCD. I know one guy with Sony LCD in his apartment, but other than that, just cheaper CRTs with 360s and N64s hooked up to them with the occasional set of Logitech speakers.

I sold my Olevia to a kid, so that's out there too, probably spreading the AIDS virus.

Quite frankly, you'd be stupid to have anything remotely high-quality in college. Odds are it will be stolen or broken by the time you graduate, so why bother? The fanciest things we have in any of my dorm rooms were our computers.

I mean, I don't have some "rich boy" allowance, and outside of Ebay, I really don't have any work-related income... my parents take care of minor living expenses, but I still seem to be able to afford this nice shit that other people could never dream of and it's just... weird.

nah, nothing like that. It's just the multiplayer console of choice for most non-Halo fans. Mario Kart 64 is still hot in these parts, but a lot of people have been getting gamecubes now that they're $30.

Exactly why I went to school 45 minutes away from my house, and lived at home. I like my nice stuff and I liked having free, homecooked meals every night.
