Happens to me alot unfortunately. Oddly enough it's usually in games I enjoy. For instance I generally suck at sports games and fighters but they're 2 of my favorite genres. And as you all probably figured out games I am really any good at are usually not multiplayer games.

Her ding ding dong? It was probably a pre-pubescent boy singing the song from eBaumsWorld... That's something you'll learn to get used to with online gaming.

I know how you feel. I just signed on Xboxlive last Friday and I sucked ass. I played a lot of shooters too in the past but I keep getting killed in Halo 2.
The thing is, I dont know the multiplayer maps in Halo very well. I suppose once I learn them, I'll get better.
I've been concentrating on Mortal Kombat right now. I'll try Halo this weekend again (I've only played 2 games).
there are always a lot of tiers like that in competitive gaming that people dont know about just playing with their friends. Even if you can beat the daylights out of everyone you know, you might not be able to do so much as scratch a tournament level player.
course those people do nothing but play the same one game. you dont want to be one of those anyway.
Go to Team Training not Skirmish like mmm stated. Halo 2 doesn't get any easier when you go up in ranks. Keep at it and you'll get better the more time you put in.
I played Halo 2 for the 5th time last night on XBL and I did a respectable game (I sucked the other 4 times I played). I even managed to pull a triple kill.
The only difference is I played Rumble Pit Practice instead of Rumble Pit. I'm not sure what the difference between the two is.
My point is, I am getting better after a few games and yes I was upset when I first went on live. But as time goes on, you will get better too.
I agree...you have to know the maps. I also suggest knowing some good weapon combos as well (personally I like a plasma and SMG combo or hiding your sword till the last second) and keep your weapons reloaded!
I got hammered too when I first started Halo 2 on live, even though I played the first with my friends a lot and played several matches on the PC version. I don't play it much anymore, when I do I usually start out bad, then, if I get the right combination of weapons, shoot up into one of the top 3 spots.
Is it just me or is Halo 2 not even Halo anymore? It reminds me of so many other fps that its almost cliche in a sense. The game actually used to be about skill in the original and now all people do is run for the sword, rocket launcher, etc. and then talk shit about how they ing rock. I'm not looking forward to Unre....I mean Halo 3 :/
I was good when I started ... got my rank up a little, and then I just couldn't win anymore. The only level I seem to do well on is Collossus. Otherwise, I'm toast.
Not that it matters though .. I haven't played Halo 2 since before Christmas. Too many good deals going on to just sit around playing one game. Besides, after actually dropping rank, I was just too discouraged to keep playing.
The thing that sucks about online gaming (or one of the things) is the people that play the game nonstop trying to master every secret there is. I don't think they play for fun, but for recognition. Like the little asian kids that spend 7 hours a day at the arcade doing ddr.
I was incredibly crappy when I first started playing Halo. I actually didn't mind getting owned so bad as long as my brother was getting 15-20 kills per game. It was at least fun to know one of us was owning. That was all from the first day I got it until Christmas break.
I dunno what it was, but something just clicked around Christmas. I just started to get better and better at it, and now I'd like to think of myself as a pretty good player.
Now a night cannot pass without me putting between one to two hours into the game. It owns my life.

In a way, I agree. I know Halo 2 needed to be different from the first in some ways, and I don't want to call Halo 2 inferior because it's just different from the first that I love so much. But the Live play I was so excited for just isn't there. No matter how much I try to force myself to enjoy it, I end up quitting after a couple games.
I guess I prefer Halo PC's style (like so many others) of just picking the game type/level from a list and jumping in rather than playing Zanzibar or Ivory Tower time after time.
Saying Halo 2 requires less skill than Halo 1 is ridiculous. The only skill needed to play Halo 1 was finding a pistol and shooting at someone's head.
You might as well tell the whole world that you are a sore loser and a mediocre player at best. I get really tired of people blaming the game, Bungie, XBL, etc. for their own faults as a player. Maybe you just aren't good.
And most of the guys who talk trash on XBL are meatheads anyways, and trust me when I say that no one will ever remember their name.
If you feel like you're getting beat a lot, go to "Team Skirmish", the one which allows guests.
Usually its just people dicking around and having fun, not taking it seriously. You can usually get 5-6 wins a row and build your confidence back up.
its not actually Team Skirmish, its either Rumble Pit Training or Team Training. Team Skirmish is a Rated game type.
I think part of peopel gettign discouraged is the rankign system. people take it as some status level and not as it was designed, to help you find games where people of the same level play together. noone wants to get slaughtered by guys that play the game 24/7.
stop thinking of the ranking as a, "yeah thats right im an 18" and play it for fun.
I fall into that im losing now my rank is gonna fall attitude sometimes and i realize, Im nbot having fun anymore.
That pretty much sums up why I don't play on XBOX Live anymore. I'm a very skilled player, and I'm tired of dealing with pricks accusing me of cheating, and then having them exploiting actual glitches to try and beat me. I did find a select few people I would have friendly games with, but they are rarely on. It seems the more mature users are in their 30's or older with children.
My advice to you is to find a core group of players that are cool and make them the center of your friends list.
Its not necessarily that you suck. it takes 2-3 weeks to get pretty good at Halo 2 online. I sucked a$$ at the start, but am now half-decent.
If you don't know the maps and where the good weapons are you are toast. You also have ZERO chance if you don't know the good dual-wield combos. Walking around with dual SMG's all the time will get your butt handed to you.
Another key tip: aim for the head, even with SMG's etc.
Just don't give up! I was so frustrated in my first week of Halo 2 online that i almost sold the game, but you'll get a ton better with practice i promise.

If you really want to feel like a insignificant online gamer play tetris worlds online.... and die in less than a minute.
Damn I've brought back bad memories now.
I'm one of those players who will make you feel insignificant playing Tetris Worlds.
I played that one time, and was beat by a girl in 45 seconds. I got rid of the game to make me feel better about myself.
