I'd like some advice from someone who owns/has owned Xbox One and PS4

I haven't bought either of the new consoles yet, and I'd like to come up with a list of pros and cons before purchasing one.  I haven't gotten much to work with so far, so I'd like some help from people who own or have owned both.  Here is what I know so far:

Xbox One Pros:

  • Ability to multitask
  • Voice controls using Kinect

PS4 Pros:

  • Multiplat games look better compared to Xbox One
  • "Free" games with PS+ (I never used PS+ before, but now that it's required for online gaming, this seems like an added benefit)

For your points, Ive yet to multitask with the Xbox one, so not that big of a deal. The voice controls get old after about ten minutes.

If I play a game on PS4 and then go play the same game on my XBO I dont think "oh the PS4 looks so much better" Only place I have ever noticed a difference is in the comparison videos where they show them side by side, and even then one will just look darker than the other.

Free XBO games with Gold so that is a push too.

If it was me and I had to choose I would just continue with whatever console looks like they have the exclusives you will want to play. So Halo or Uncharted.

I own both the Xbox One and PS4 and I have yet to come to a conclusion of which is better then the other. I got hooked on achievements when Xbox 360 started it so that's why I had 360 > ps3 but with how actually PS4 > Xbox One in graphics is kinda why I've been going back to sony. They both have there ups and downs but I feel like it really comes down to Exclusives as per what Musha said. Most of the great titles are for both systems anyways so you are getting them either way you go, pretty much whatever floats your boat Ginger!

Some games, like Tomb Raider, certainly do run better on the PS4... this can't be argued.

But like everyone else has said I would consider only these things:

1) Which exclusives do you like better [Gears, Halo, Forza etc. vs Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, etc.]

2) What do your friends have? If you're an online player you might want to take that into account

3) Right now Sony has a much larger install base. No one knows for sure if that will be closed by the recent push by MS or if it will grow but if it continues to grow that might give Sony a power play into securing more exclusives or at least exclusive content.

But really I think #1 is the most important factor right now. I have owned every console the past few generations and I think the graphics comparison this generation holds about as much weight as the "online community" argument held last generation. Neither bullet point mattered/s to me because the difference isn't night and dahy.

PS4 exclusives appeal to me more, but it really irks me that the PS4 can't multitask and the Xbox One can.  Not being able to multitask on the PS3 drove me nuts and I had hoped it would change with the PS4.

what is it you want to do that involves multitasking?

I'm not sure how much multitasking you're doing but if you just want to go from a game to the internet you can do that on the PS4 and it not interupt your game.  You can even switch between the internet and the game by double tapping the PS Button and just go to the home screen by tapping the PS Button.  Also you can go to your PS4 settings and then back to your game which I don't remember being able to do on the PS3.

Not abundant multi tasking, but for example, on PS3, I can't even do something as simple as turn off notifications (when a friend signs on or when I receive a new message) without exiting the game I am playing.  That seems ridiculous to me.

I borrowed a friend xb1 while he was out of town to try it for a couple weeks and play some of his games.

Multi tasking? I dont know. I play game systems to play games and thats it. On my ps4 I know ive hit the ps button to get the dashboard up to look at trophies or something like that and it pops right up with no hesitation while in a game.

We both own a couple multi plat games so I compared them and the ps4 did look slightly better and ran smoother slightly.

Really though for me I like my ps4 better because it has a deeper bench of exclusive games and it has a lot more I like on it. Microsoft tends to mostly be shooters, driving and a collection of shit family/kids games. I just like Sony's exclusives better and the fact a lot of cross platform games look better on it thats why I went with it. The exclusives are coming out slowly since a lot of devs still cater to last gen due to a huge base but uncharted 4 and bloodhound will be a big shot in the arm for ps4 only exclusives.

Ps4 has more users as well and it shows online from what I can tell. Really all I played online is diablo 3 but day or night I can easily find groups of people which is good considering vanilla d3 has been on consoles for awhile and been on the pc even longer, then you factor in the huge variety of acts, difficulties, and so on for me to easily find others shows it has a lot of people online. Meanwhile playing it on his xb1 in the evening and late night id have to try a couple times to find one person to group with.

And while its subjective I like the ps4 controller a lot more. And I feel ps+ gives me more and is easier a pill to swallow than xblg not to mention you can always find 1 year cards on sale for 40 easily. I like that I get more games also and since I own a ps3 and vita the fact I get games for all 3 systems is nice. Getting discounts on games you buy through the pen store, cloud save storage and such is nice also.

If I had to choose, I'd go with PS4 because it has a bigger install base so it'll probably see more favorable publisher support in years to come, it technically runs games better, you don't have to buy batteries for the wireless controller, and you can upgrade the hard drive more easily.

I had both and sold the X1 after about a month.  Basically what everyone's said so far is pretty much right on.

I definitely wasn't a fan of the X1's interface - I can't stand those Metro tiles on it or in Windows 8.

PS4's interface is much cleaner and simpler.

The X1 is nice if you play and have your cable/sat hooked up to the same TV.  You can navigate the guide and watch TV while you're in game.  But for me it was a waste of a feature - I play on a 24" monitor that's not used for TV viewing.

PS4 has voice controls too.  They're just pretty basic compare to the X1, but this could always be expanded and improved with updates.

PS+ free games are really nice, especially if you have a PS3 and/or Vita.  I kept my PS3  knowing that I'd have a PS+ subscription and would be getting free games every month.  The PS4 freebees haven't yet been AAA titles, but they've been very fun, quality indie releases.

PS4 also has remote play via the Vita and the soon to be released Playstation TV.  And if they ever get a reasonable pricing structure for Playstation Now, that's something to consider as well.

I'm not a social gamer anymore so I had very little interest in community or multiplayer games. For me it came down to the exclusives and the prospected support of the system. I had to go with the PS4. Also the PS+ service is awesome especially if you still have a PS3 system.

This is all coming from an almost exclusive 360 gamer from last gen. I had the achievement itch at one point and all my friends had a 360. But I guess I grew out of it.

I did have a chance to play a X1 last week for a few hours and I hate hate hate the windows interface. I hated it last gen too.

Ohh and one more thing. The PS4 controller is the bees knees. It just feels so good in your hands. X1 controller wasn't bad but I didn't get the same sense of comfort.

They're both great systems, but I'd go with the PS4 right now.  The third party games look better, and the first party games look better than X1 as well.  I think that PS4 has better exclusives as well.  You're pros and cons are even in number, but "ability to multitask" isn't going to make you happy with a gaming purchase.   Good graphics and great deals are the pros you had for the PS4 and that trumps the pros you identified on the X1.  The Kinect voice controls on X1 are AWESOME, but I wouldn't pay 100 dollars more for that. Being able to walk into a room and say Xbox on is fun....although it will NEVER work when you try to show the feature off to a friend.   You have to pay 100 dollars more to get one of the pros that you identified.  I don't like the power brick that the X1 comes with. The PS4 has a horrible power and eject buttons, I prefer the X1 console (body) better than the PS4.

Controllers:  I prefer the PS4 overall, because of the position of the sticks and D-pad (ps4 d-pad easier to use on fighting games).  I don't like the thumb sticks, they are rubbery and can get slippery at times.   I do like the headphone jack that's built into the controller, which will allow you to use any wired headset without issue. I like that better than the the X1 controller.  The x1 controller does feel sturdy, and I love it's thumbsticks. The thumbstick are a harder plastic and never feel slippery.  Also I like the rivets on the side.

Had the PS4 since launch and XB1 for about 2 months now. Currently own 5 PS4 games and 1 XB1 but that mainly because one had the PS4 longer. Mainly bought an XB1 for the exclusives like Halo Collection and Quantum Break but feel that I'll go with PS4 on most of the multiplats.

Also not a big fan of the XB1 interface but not a deal breaker.

I agree with most of the other as to why to go with a PS4.

Am I the only one who also fuck ing hates how the Achievements look on Xbox One? They looked great on the 360 but instead of the nicely organized small icons they are now large game covers that take forever to scroll through if you have a ton of games played.

First and foremost, go where the games are. If you like Playstation exclusives pick up a PS4. If you like Xbox exclusives pick up an X1. They are both great systems.

I don't own a PS4 yet but I will soon. I've had an X1 since launch so I can give you some thoughts. Your two listed pros, are also two of my pros. Instant game resume is pretty freaking sweet, snapping apps is useful if you have a large enough TV and quickly switching from say Netflix or your TV channels to a game is great. As far as voice commands go, I use them a lot for tasks outside of gaming. That being said, there are a few times where I will be using voice commands and I will have to pick up the controller and select something...kind of ruins the point of voice commands. On that same note, other than voice commands, I don't really use kinect at all but I do think it's worth it for voice commands. If you are on a tight budget, I would actually suggest picking up the kinect-less version.

Something else that the Xbox is killing it at is system updates. Every month they release fixes/new features/updating the user interface. I'm not too familiar with the update process of the PS4 operating system but I do know the updates are not nearly as frequent.

Of course, this comes down to preference but I do enjoy the X1 controller much more than the PS4 controller. To be fair, I have also used the X1 controller a lot more than the PS4 controller.

You mentioned free games with PS+ and I would definitely agree with you. With Xbox Live Gold you also get free games but I personally think the PS+ games are better. Be that as it may, the Xbox Live Gold games are pretty decent...and it's still free games.

Another thing to think about is indie games. So far, and in the future, the PS4 is pretty much the go to indie console. In saying that, the X1 is going to be getting a lot of great indie games too.

You did mention the better looking games for the PS4. That is absolutely true and will always be true. Games on the PS4 will almost always look better than games on the X1. Does it matter though? Will the difference be big enough for you to notice? Some people can notice the difference and do care about the difference but the vast majority of people who own these consoles either can't tell a difference or don't care. If better visuals in games is something that you really care about than yeah the PS4 would have you covered.

Something else that rarely gets mentioned in these types of conversations is company resources. Microsoft is a crazy huge company with virtually unlimited resources. You have people like Phil Spencer hitting the ground running with GAMES GAMES GAMES and distancing the Xbox team from the debacle of the X1 reveal. I can guarantee Phil has an ENORMOUS budget to work with. You also have the CEO of Microsoft publicly stating that the Xbox division and gaming in general is very important to the core business and future of Microsoft. This means lots and lots of money and resources are going to be and are being poured into the Xbox team so that the X1 is a success. On the other hand, you have the Playstation division doing great in a company that isn't doing so great. I don't know this for sure, but my guess is that the Playstation division or whatever it's called isn't getting too much support from Sony.

In saying all of that, what console would I recommend? Once again, go where the games are. If you like Uncharted, Infamous, Little Big Planet, Bloodbourne, etc. etc. go with the PS4, you won't be disappointed at all! If you like Halo, Gears of War, Sunset Overdrive, Forza, Ryse, Quantam Break etc. etc. go with the X1, you won't be disappointed at all! If you like all games equally, I would suggest an X1.

Edit: I forgot to add, consider what your friends have. If you have friend that play games and y'all like to play with each other than definitely consider that.

As of right now the Xbox has a better software/dashboard setup but the games are better on PS4. I've had both consoles since launch. I buy all games on PS4 and just use the Xbox for exclusives. The battery is better in the Xbox controller but I barely ever play a game longer then 5 hours straight so I just put my Dualshock 4 on the charge base. Microsoft has been pushing some new features out each and every month which is Kool, they are a Software company so that's expected.

If you haven't made a decision yet, I highly recommend you check out the features coming to PS4 with the V2.0 update. The SharePlay feature could be absolutely groundbreaking. And there's also PS Now, if you didn't own a PS3 last gen, you could go back and play some of the PS3 games you missed.

I think everyone is pretty dead on so far. I was going to go Ps4 but I got a really good discount for the X1 so I am going with that first. Besides the games I want to play are pretty much all on X1 at this point. I think PS4 has a brighter future as of now though. They have a huge market lead, they will be around and the platform of choice for the foreseeable future. They will have great exclusives down the line.

I'm pretty happy with where I am because I will have the X1 now and get a PS4 in a year or so when they have better exclusives and probably a refined hardware model. Plus it will probably be cheaper at some point. PS4 has the stability. X1 has the games right now. IF you can only get one, get the PS4 unless you really like the exclusives on X1.

PS4 without a doubt. The X1 is too gimmicky, the dash layout is a mess, laggy, and the free games they give you is a joke (viva pinata) lol

I own both.

PS4 is gaming straight forward.

Xbox One is media straight forward.

I'm a gamer and don't care about other stuff too much right now. That's what I use my computer for.

PS4 is my pick for you.
