This morning, I went to Target to pick up a PSP game. When I took it to the cashier, she asked," Do you want a gift receipt with this?" I said sure and then she asked for my ID. I gave it to her thinking she was just verifying my age or something but she swipes it through like a credit card.

Why does Target need my ID if I want a gift receipt. In the past, whenever I bought a game, they automatically include a gift receipt. So why now all of a sudden? Is it because of the holiday season? I don't want to be blacklisted for some odd reasonl like if all my gifts gets returned.

How exactly do you swipe an ID? Maybe it varies in different states, but my Connecticut Drivers License doesn't have any barcode or swipe on it at all.

edit. nevermind, probably not a good idea. If you guys really wanna know how the scam works, ask a mod if its ok, and I'll tell how.

They did the same thing with my ID when buying a M rated game at Target once. I didn't reaize the cashier was going to do that and it was done so quickly, I didn't have a chance to say anything before I realized it. Thankfully, most cashiers just ask for my birthday or just type in some random date.

I did buy a M-rated game......so maybe that's why she swipped my ID. They usually just ask for your birthdate; they probably just realized that a minor could just lie about that.

Correct, it does vary by state as fortunetly ours doesn't have that either. Hopefully it'll stick that way.

OP, did you happen to write a check for your purchase?

Nope, no check---paid by cash. I think it was just because the game was rated M. I bought Zelda:TP on Tuesday with a giftcard and I didn't need to show any ID. It just puzzles me why they can't just look at your birthdate on the driver license like most stores do with alcohol/smokes. I wonder what they do with the info?

Eh, some liquor stores/bars around here do that. I think it's just a way to spot fake IDs, but I've heard it will tell if you've received a "replacement" (i.e. there could be more than one of that ID floating around). None of my bartender friends use the system, so I really have no idea.
