Ideal job for an upcoming college student?

CAGiversary!
Well simply put, i'm near graduating high school and will soon be attending college within the next year. I've worked 2 stressful, yet decent years in retail at Target, and quite frankly i'm tired of it. I can sometimes stand working with the pain in the ass customers, but in 2 years i've only gone up 1 dollar from when i started on wage. I was thinking of being a waiter at a couple restaurants that are now hiring i n my area. But from a number people, I've been hearings about the pains of working as a waiter, so right now I'm kinda in between on what do for my next job. I would appreciate any feedback or advice on what choice i should take.

Work at student dining center, women's resource center, student services, volunteer for art modeling if you have a half decent body.

Women's resource center would be best IMO.

Truthfully, no matter what it may be, there's always going to be that one guy who says "oh yeah, that totally sucks ass"; meaning you can listen to other's opinions all you want, but you still won't have any idea of what YOU might think about it until you actually give it a try. Everything's worth trying, if only once.

My point: Give waiting a shot, what have you got to lose? Time and effort? Psh, like you were gonna do something useful with that anyway...

Try getting a job as an RA or NA. I know @ my college you get free ulimited meals at any campus dinning hall and a 75% discount in housing. That is a lot of fucking money you can use for something else.
I suggest working somewhere you can get free food at. It's saved my life, and my wallet through college.
I'll second that. If not food, a place that get's you decent discount on consumables... you'll be glad you're not starving because of that.

I actually just got a job working at a Lan center part-time. I start on Monday, should be fun!

I didnt know Cali. min.-wage was $8.00. Back when I lived in Jersey it was $5.25

Oh and if you live in my area, stop by in the MoVal Howies in the MoVal Mall (Near the food court) :D

I second the RA gig, free housing and free 7 day buffet meal plan at some universities though it does come with pay its small and mainly all about saving money not making it.

You could try working at the computer lab at your college. My roommate does it, you get to sit on the internet while your working there and once in awhile you just need to add more paper to the printer.

Don't most colleges require you to be a sophomore or higher?

I do nothing but surf the net, do homework, or occasionally check the printers for paper and thats all.

I agree with all the posters who recommended working on campus. It's easy to get a job, very flexible, etc.

I'd recommend working at the bookstore (ours gives discounts on already cheap computer stuff - but not textbooks, unfortunately) or at a campus restaurant. It wasn't policy, but we got away with a lot of free food, which is crucial for college students.

Food and naps.

Security jobs at malls or other places are usually not too bad. My friend got a job in college as a security guard for a mall. Stores in the mall gave him free stuff all the time (like food). He also had a ton of free time and played video games on his PSP/DS and he studied.

dudes don't usually make $$$ off this...
Surprised no one has said porn yet...
I second the tutoring co-op job and the computer lab job. Those computer lab people are pretty lazy.

I don't know about you guys, but at my college, most of the jobs you're speaking of on campus are work-study jobs (I think that's the term?). That means that these jobs automatically go to people who applied for FAFSA and qualify. The rest of us who don't qualify for financial aid never have a chance at these jobs :(

The Capn is a wise man. Working on-campus is pretty much some of the easiest work you'll ever do. :)

I vote go for the waiter job. Yes it is stressful, but when you're making $100+ from a 5 hour shift (for the most part untaxed, and that isn't counting your paycheck) you learn to deal with the minor annoyances.
