If someone was to buy a PS2 now..what would YOU say were the 10 must have games on the PS2?

I know threads like this are pretty annoying..but I have not seen one (at least recently). But there's a few things to consider when replying.

Don't just name 1 or 2 games and say "That's all you need". There's hundreds of games for this system and there has to be at least 10 of them that all PS2 owners need to experience.

Ok, this is for me :) After.. 6 years? I'm considering a PS2..since..well, I dunno. I never had a PSone, and a PS3 is just.. meh.

I'm not a huge fan of sports titles, so keep them omitted. Also, keep games that can be found on Xbox & Gamecube out too. I want Top 10 PS2 exclusive.

Thanks in advance to all of those who cooperate :)

I'd have to say (from personal experience and word of mouth):

Any of the Nippon Icchi games (Disgaea is a must)
Bully
Final Fantasy XII
Devil May Cry (all 3)
Ratchet and Clank
Jak and Dexter
Sly
God of War

Okami
Valkyrie Profile 2
Final Fantasy XII
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (and Anniversary Edition, but that's on Xbox as well)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
God Hand
Shadow of the Colossus
Ico
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
Tekken 5
Okami
Okami
Okami

If I would only keep ten out of my collection this is what I would keep
EDIT!
Oh My Goodness...
I forgot what is possibly my FAVORITE PS2 game.....
OKAMI!!!!
It is a masterpiece of gaming and one that you cant, just cannot miss.

God of War - amazing game, the king of beat em ups
Devil May Cry - the former king of beat em ups, has a different style and sense of cool than GOW
Final Fantasy XII - made me fall in love with role playing again, mature story, great battle system
Frequency - better than Amplitude, a superb music game that was very different for the time
Disgaea - picking only one strategy title, this one is the best of the bunch, even if it was the first
Ratchet and Clank 2 - the best of the trilogy, perfect balance of battle and adventure/platforming
Sly Cooper 1 - short but sweet cel shaded platformer with a dash of stealth
Jak 3 - darker, epic, great game all arouond
Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance - the water physics were out of this world at the time. Great game co op or going alone if you like Diablo type games (which I do)
Bombastic - the evolution of Devil Dice, great, frenetic puzzle game
Soul Caliber 3 - the sequel to the best fighting game ever. Not as pretty as SC2 on the XBox but it was exclusive to the PS2 this time around.

BG:DA was on other consoles later, but started out as PS exclusive. So therefore I named 11.

Runnerups:
Devil May Cry 3
Ico
Ratchet and Clank 1
Amplitude
Guitaroo Man
Primal
Drakan Ancients Gates
Mad Maestro
Atelier Iris
Culdcept

question : is Shadow of the Colossus that good? I keep looking it over although I did enjoy Ico. Mixed word has shied me away from it.

Here's my biased opinion:
Guitar Hero
Guitar Hero 2
Dark Cloud
Metal Gear Solid 3
God of War
DBZ Budokai 3
GTA Vice City
Monster Rancher 3
Champions of Norrath
Socom

These are the games I spent a lot of time with.

1. Okami
2. Rogue Galaxy
3. Final Fantasy XII
4. Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition
5. Kingdom Hearts
6. Kingdom Hearts II
7. Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 (if you like DBZ)
7. Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution (if you don't like DBZ)
8. Metal Gear Solid 3
9. Shadow of the Colossus
10. Dragon Quest VIII

edit: chose dragon quest viii instead of yakuza, i can't believe i completely forgot about that game until i read rodeo's post

Here's 10 that I enjoyed immensely from beginning to end, well actually 9, I never finished Alien Hominid cause it got insanely difficult and I had to give up on it.

God of War
Devil May Cry
Black
Alien Hominid
Ico
Indigo Prophecy
Psychonauts
Jak 3
I-Ninja
Kigdom Hearts

There's way more than ten that are must haves, but here's my best shot at it in no particular order:
Metal Gear Solid 3
GTA: San Andreas
Guitar Hero II
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Suikoden III
Amplitude
Devil May Cry
Tony Hawk's Underground
Timesplitters Future Perfect

I tried not to put in too many of one series, or else MGS2, TS2, Guitar Hero,Frequency, or other GTA's could easily fit in there too. If you're into sports games the two must owns are MVP Baseball 2005 and ESPN NFL 2K5.

These threads can be annoying, but this is actually a good topic, just because of how varied the PS2 library is. My God, I've had one for six years and my collection has spilled off the shelves and into stacks on the floor. It's the first console I owned tht I was old enough to work and buy games for the entire time.
Well, here's my list of top 10 PS2 exclusives (with some commentary):

1.) Devil May Cry 1 & 3 - The first one is sort of forgotten, but was really revolutionary at the time, at least for me. It was the first time I really saw games start to show the production values of movies. It had incredible atmosphere, sense of cool (as someone said), and a decent fighting system. The third one has the best cutscenes ever, IMO, and the customization available with the fighting...whew, I felt like the shit playing that game. DMC 2, on the other hand, was good but rushed and generic and blah...
2.) Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 - A lot of people were surprised these games came out so good, but if you followed it from early development to final release, it looked fantastic the whole time. Played good, even if the story sort of collapses in on itself, as FF games tend to do.
3.) Bully - Best game I played in '06. The whole "sandbox" thing never intrigued me, but this took it to a different level. Great graphics, music, and a darkly funny, surprisingly mature story. Great original music score. Just criminally underrated.
4.) Katamari Damacy - Can't say enough about this one. Perfect marriage of simple gameplay made more complex by great execution. Best soundtrack ever. One of the best opening videos ever. Anything that has the King of All Cosmos vomiting rainbows (and cows) is killer.
5.) Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - Got this (apparently rare) game w/guidebook for $25. Best value ever. A little too weird for its own good sometimes, but the press turn battle system...so simple and so complex. Fusing demons could have been a game by itself. One of my top 3 RPGs ever (Final Fantasy VIII and Chrono Trigger are the others).
6.) Okami - People "in the know" about offbeat titles love this one, almost to the point where its overrated. But damn is it good. The PS2 Zelda as people like to say, and, at times, surpasses even that revered series.
7.) Sega Genesis Collection - Best retro comp ever. So many gems: Comix Zone, Ristar, Gain Ground. All packaged and presented perfectly.
8.) Shadow Hearts, SH: Covenant, SH: From the New World: These titles get plenty of respect from RPG fans, and rightfully so. Spent a good afternoon tracking down all three in one day. Found the first one at a flea market for $15. Second at a different booth for $10. Got the third from EB after the price drop to $19.99. All three for the price of 1 game and I would have paid $50 for each one. This from a hardcore CAG. High praise.
9.) La Pucelle Tactics - IMO, the worst game on this list. BUT its long, its deep, and the best part is its atmosphere. Besides Katamari and Okami, its the most artistic here and on the PS2 in general. Pretty humorous, too.
10.) Amplitude - A lot of people say Frequency is superior, but the song selection here is just awesome. Incredible track from Bowie still lodged in my head and its been a couple years since I picked this up. Nothing in gamedom matches the feeling of getting really locked into a song.

Honorable mention: Final Fantasy XII. Final Fantasy X2 (I am the only person who liked this, I think. Too much estrogen, but still great). Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2. Suikoden III. Dark Cloud. Xenosaga. Twisted Metal Black (what the fuck happened to this series???). Virtua Fighter 4. SMT: Devil Summoner (not nearly as good as the other Shin Megami Tensei games - doesn't mean its not good). ICO. Makai Kingdom. Disgaea.
I could go on all night (and I already have).

I was so interested in this, I took a little tally of what everyone had said. Surprisingly, the Devil May Cry series is actually winning thus far
Here's how I scored it:
Devil May Cry (1& 3)
Okami
Final Fantasy XII
Metal Gear Solid 3 ( I didn't put this on my list because it appeared on XBox)
The Jak series
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
Bully
Ratchet and Clank
Disgaea
Nocturne

It would be interesting to see if this holds up as more people chime in. I would never have thought Devil May Cry would be considered the best PS2 exclusive ever. The hardcore sort of gamers love it, but I tried to get tons of people to play it and it never held their interest. It used to piss me off. I was at my neighbor's house once and he actually turned off DMC3 to play Madden. I moved the next weekend (OK, I was moving anyway. But that's reason enough - fucking casual gamers. Scum)
Anyway, just thought the results were interesting. pretty uniform amongst CAGs, but i bet if you asked the majority of PS2 owners, it would be like:
- Madden
- NBA Live
- GTA: San Andreas Vice Liberty City Stories or something like that
- Resident Evil 4 (which does kick ass, but it best on GameCube).
- Silent Hill (also not bad, and has a bigger following with casual fans than you would think)
- Probably Ratchet and Clank and Jak
Metal Gear Solid 3 ( I didn't put this on my list because it appeared on XBox)
No it didn't. MGS2 is on Xbox, but MGS3 most definitely is NOT.

Amplitude
Frequency
Guitar Hero
Guitar Hero 2
Katamari Damacy
Okami
Taiko Drum Master
Twisted Metal: Black
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution

Hmm ... that's only 9 but everything else I have is either non-exclusive, just average, or I haven't played it.

In Order:
Jak II
Jak 3
Crash Bandicoot: Warped (PS1 game, but you said you never had one)
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (see above)
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet and Clank
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Bully
Getaway, The: Black Monday
Final Fantasy X

Playstation 2 is easily the best system for 3D platformers.

You only get 10 games??? Ok, here is my list

1) FF XII - Great game in the series, and it's a new game
2) FF X - One of my favorite games ever made, and great for the series. I think it's very playable
3) Ico - Possibly video games best attempt at art so far.
4) Jak 1
5) Jak 2
6) Jak 3 (love the series, and one doesn't really stand out from the rest).
7) Amplitude - great game, nothing else like it
8) Metal Gear Solid 3
9) Shadow of the Colassus (I own it but I haven't played through it yet, but it looks great).
10) GT4 (again, haven't played it through myself (only for about an hour), but I loved 3, and 4 looks to be better in most ways).

I tried to avoid cross platform games, but that's the great part of this system, there are tons of games worth playing on it.

It's hard only picking ten but here are some ones that are pretty original.
In no order:
Culdcept
Suikoden 5
Katamari Damacy
Shadow of Colossus
Okami
Tekken 5
King of Fighters 2006
Disgaea
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Radiata Stories

1.) Final Fantasy X
2.) Okami
3.) God of War
4.) Dragon Quest VIII
5.) Ratchet and Clank
6.) MGS3
7.) Shadow of the Collossus
8.) Resident Evil 4
9.) VF4 Evolution
10.) Growlanser Generations

It's funny to see so many people pushing 'niche title'-heavy lists on a person who clearly isn't all about the hardcore side of what the PS2 had to offer, seeing as how he doesn't have one yet (not that there's anything particularly wrong with that).

dragonreborn23 has the most well-balanced list (chronologically and stylistically) so far, but I might suggest swapping out one or two or those for a Gran Turismo IV or a Guitar Hero (II). Or hell, just make it easier on yourself and go for a baker's dozen! Ten games from that library? Impossible!

I think part of it, is that if you are looking for the "PS2 exclusive experience" most of the titles that are outstanding and come to mind are niche titles in nature. The mass marketed "for everyone" titles hopped over to other systems or came to the PS2 from elsewhere (like Resident Evil 4 which is on several lists here). I tried to diversify my list by putting an exclusive fighter, puzzler and music game on it. And also by limiting series by picking which I percieved to be the best of the bunch (and the one that I would keep if I was whittling a collection down to the very basics).

Metal Gear Solid 3 is probably a good choice as well.
Grand Turismo IV if car driving simulation is your thing. Its extremely boring compared to some of the arcadey racers.

Bully, the two Katamari games, Twisted Metal Black, all are super choices too.
I havent played my PS2 much recently but this thread has made me want to dig it back out.

Same here, I've got most of the games listed that I want, but this thread helped me remember others that I plan to get on a good price drop and when I have money (Final Fantasy XII, Kingdom Hearts 2, Devil Summoner, and Bully for starters).

Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
God of War
God of War 2
Resident Evil 4
Shadow of the Colossus
Devil May Cry 3
Final Fantasy XII

Wow, this is tough. Here are mine in order:

1. Final Fantasy X
2. Final Fantasy XII
3. Okami
4. God of War
5. Resident Evil 4
6. Guitar Hero
7. Guitar Hero 2
8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
9. Devil May Cry 3
10. Street Fighter Alpha Anthology

Honorable Mentions:

Disgaea series
Tekken series
Soul Calibur series (I cannot believe this didn't make my top 10, now that I look at it)
Many, many others!

Maybe you should make it top 15 or 20, some of these games are getting the shaft!

Bully is on my list too for future "to get" games if it has a price drop. There are still some games coming out that might make the top ten too. God of War 2 is getting insane reviews, some going so far as to say its the best game on the PS2...period. So that's something to think about. And Odin Sphere looks VERY interesting.

When I bought Okami and Guitar Hero II (and Final Fantasy XII) I thought i was purchasing the last games for that system generation, but it looks like I was wrong. :)

God of War
God of War 2 (most likely)
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
Final Fantasy X
Bully
Okami
Resident Evil 4
Guitar Hero
Guitar Hero 2

In no order ^^^

guess I'll add Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. you'll never need another samurai game again.

Wow, this got more responses then I imagined. I like the fact that most people say "Only 10?", which is a good thing.

I'm probably not buying a PS2 anytime SOON..since I have a backlog of DS-Wii-360 games to get by. Also, I just have a feeling sometime this year there will be some sort of PS2 price cut..? (I hope!)..and that's because I probably won't be buying a PS3 anytime soon.

Thanks so far :)

Really if anything else, you should come away with one thing:

Okami.

I'm not going to add my list because almost all of them would be mentioned,
but if you like RPGs...

I thought Dark Cloud 2 was phenomenal.

For platformers...

Klonoa 2.

Virtua Fighter 4: Evo
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Guilty Gear series
Tekken 5
Shadow of the Colossus
Final Fantasy X
God of War
Kingdom Hearts
Gran Turismo series
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

I'm gonna say:

Guitar Hero
Tekken 5
Ico
Amplitude
Frequency
Katamari Damacy
Virtua Figher 4: Evolution
Shadow of the Colossus
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (it's on other systems, but the PS2 expeience is definitive)

My top ten list (not in order), includes ONLY PS2 exclusive titles, and no RPGs.

Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Okami
Devil May Cry 3
Katamari Damacy
Maximo vs the Army of Zin
Sly Cooper
God of War
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
War of the Monsters

10 must owns...

Gran Turismo 4
Shadow of the Colossus
God of War / God of War II
Katamari
Guitar Hero
ZOE 2
Kingdom Hearts I/II
Ace Combat 4
Resident Evil 4
Gitaroo Man

The PS2 has a ton of great games. My personal library stands at 104 games, and there'll still be more to add!

In making a list of must-have games, I'll make it a point to avoid choosing more than one game from a series. (But I will choose both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus!)

01. Okami
02. ICO
03. Final Fantasy XII
04. Shadow of the Colossus
05. God of War
06. Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
07. Sly 2: Band of Thieves
08. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
09. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
10. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (or the enhanced Subsistence version)

Sorry, I just have to add this one:

11. Katamari Damacy

If you want me to write a paragraph on each game and why I chose it, I could totally do that.

Geez, only ten? That's gonna be really difficult.

If I was stuck on a desert island (...which would conviently have electricity and a TV lounging around somewhere), I would choose these games, in no particular order:

Guitar Hero (I or II): AWESOME game. I love music games, and this guitar-sim is one of the best out there. The gameplay is simplistically realistic, and the song selection is surprisingly good.

Shadow Hearts II/Covenant: The first one is a better game in partically all aspects, but the second in the series has one of the BEST Turned-based RPG battle systems.

Guilty Gear X2: Though there are a lot of flaws, this 2D fighting games is one of the few fighting games that has a decent plot. The sprite animation, attacks, "story-mode", voice-acting (a bit grating sometimes, but very diverse and well-done)....EVERYTHING about this game. Oh yeah; the music kicks ass too!

Shadow of the Colossus: You play as a tiny wanderer, and battle colossi in a HUGE world environment. Enough said.

Okami: I have yet to buy this game (SOOOO expensive!), but, from what I've played, this is interactive art defined. AMAZING cell-shading graphics, lush environments, colorful characters, interesting story immersed in Japanese mythology makes Okami a must-have for ANY gamer (...unless you have a phobia for wolves or something...)

Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter: This game got a TON of praise AND scorn for its innovative story-telling, graphics, and batttle system. This game was arguably the most difficult gameplay in the series, but it's one of my treasured games, despite its difficulty and unorthodox battle system.

Katamari Damacy: Story-in-two-sentences: Your father got drunk one day and literally decimated the cosmos' supply of stars. It's up to you to rebuild the heavens...by rolling shit up and hurling them into the skies. And honestly? It's AWESOMELY FUN.

Psychonauts: Buy it for the concept and humor alone, if platforming-esque games aren't your fancy. DO IT.

Final Fantasy XII: I actually wasn't a fan of the story or characters, but I have to admit it's a very good game. Err, I'll stop myself before I dig myself any deeper.

Silent Hill 2: I think it's the best out of the Silent Hill series. It separates from the "evil cult" story, and follows a simple man with a not so simple past. It's probably the ONLY horror game I ever played voluntarily (I'm quite the chickenshit

1 - metal gear solid 3
2 - gta: san andreas
3 - god of war
4 - zone of the enders 2: the 2nd runner (LOVED THIS GAME)
5 - manhunt
6 - devil may cry 3
7 - shadow of the colossus
8 - kingdom hearts
9 - guitar hero 1 and 2
10 - okami

in no particular order.

I haven't had a PS2 in a year in a half, but with that being said I still have got to throw a few of my favs in here.

1. God of War - Awesome, fun, great, and did I say awesome game. Loved it. In fact I am going to be buying another PS2 in the next couple of weeks so I can play this one before I get the second one.
2. Metal Gear Solid games - Thought all of them were fun.
3. World of Outlaws: Sprint Cars 2002 - One of a kind game and a cheap buy.
4. Grand Theft Auto(s) - If you don't know why you are an idiot

I just bought a PS2 a few weeks ago. The games I have purchased so far:
God of War
Rez
Frequency
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Katamari Damacy / We

In no order:

Metal Gear Solid 3
GTA: San Andreas
God of War
Katamari Damacy
Final Fantasy XII
Guitar Hero II
Shadow of the Colossus
Hot Shots Golf 3
any of the Ratchet & Clank titles (Going Commando is the best, in my opinion)
any of the Onimusha titles

Choosing just ten is really tough. Okami would be a close 11, and I haven't played DMC3 yet. If I had to choose ten and only ten, this is the list that could keep me playing for years.

Amplitude
FFXII
Devil May Cry 3: SE
Sly 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 3
Katamari Damacy
God of War
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Guitar Hero

I created this exact thread about 2 years ago when I was given my first PS2. I asked for exclusives only and I asked to keep it RPG free.

That being said I've complied this list.

1) God of War - dear GOD this was a great game. You play it. Now.

2) Dragon Warrior VIII - feels like an old school RPG with jazzed up graphics. This is a old school "level up" game, but I liked that.

3) Ratchet and Clank - Platforming goodness

4) Jak and Daxter - see above

5) Sly Cooper - see above

Top five is all I can really give based on how long I've had the system. Have fun!
If someone was to buy a PS2 now..what would YOU say were the 10 must have games on the PS2?

Thanks in advance to all of those who cooperate :)
In an effort to keep my opinions my own and not be swayed by outside influence, I stopped reading this thread after the initial post. That being said, lilboo, if you later said, "Stop posting games, I decided I don't want a PS2!". Well, sorry.

In no particular order Halo05's top 10 PS2 exclusive games...

10. Metal Gear Solid 3 - No whiny Raiden, a minimum of corny characters, incredible graphics and boss fights.

9. God of War - Kratos is possibly the baddest ass to ever grace a videogame. To top it off, the gameplay got me so amped I wanted to jump kick my sister. God of War II could probably also be included but I'm cheap so I'm waiting for it to drop to 29.99 tops.

8. Street Fighter Alpha Anthology - My favorite fighting games ever, arcade perfect, playable with the wonderful variety of kick-ass fighting game joysticks and controllers on the PS2. I recommend the PS2 Saturn pad.

7. Shadow of the Colossus - Very moving game about a boy, his dead girlfriend, his horse and 16 of the biggest boss fights in the history of videogames. I just wish they had waited and released this on the PS3 so the framerate wouldn't get raped constantly.

6. Gran Turismo 4 - It's no Forza 2 but at this point, nothing is. Plus if you ever wanted to whip around in an old Nissan Skyline from like 1984, here's your chance.

5. Disgaea - Very addictive strategy RPG. Like Final Fantasy Tactics but with more entertaining characters, a proper english translation and some of the funniest conversations in a videogame ever.

4. Sega Genesis Collection - It's been ported to the PSP but not the Xbox or GC. In today's world of the PSN, XBLA and the VC, discs like this are a dying breed which is total bullshit. Over 20 old Sega Genesis games, most of them classics. Bring on Phantasy Star 4.

3. Metal Slug Anthology - Metal Slug 1 - 6 on one disc for 40 bucks. Contra is a weak little baby compared to these games (well, not really but the worst Metal Slug is nearly as good as the best Contra).

2. Shin Megami Tensai Nocturne - I don't know if I spelled it right but I know it's an awesome, brutally difficult RPG. For a time I scoffed at people who called RPGs hard, after a few weeks with this, I learned what they meant. Not for the easily frustrated.

1. Tekken 5 - Cheap and loaded with extras. This one gets the nod for the casual fighting game fan over Virtua Fighter 4 Evo simply because in addition to the entertaining T5, the disc includes (allegedly though I'm no pro) arcade perfect versions of the first three Tekken games. Tekken 2 dominated one of my summers and I got pretty good at it, it feels very slow now but once upon a time, I was a force to be reckoned with.

That's about it. There are some imports I would've thrown up there instead but I figured you're not that interested in the PS2 yet.

Second the Maximo series - I preferred the original. It's the perfect blend of action and platforming/ similar to Ratchet but with a sword instead and tougher. Although Ratchet was great technically, I found the characters and universe to be boring - the attempts at humor didn't quite do it for me.

It's really hard to just name 10 because you can look at any genre and there will be at least one top quality PS2 game for it and you can't compare apples to oranges. The only exception would be the FPS genre - PS2 didn't have many exclusives.

turn based rpg - FFX
action rpg - Rogue Galaxy, Kingdom Hearts
rhythm - frequency
sports - hot shots
adventure - ico, mark of kri, okami
shooter/platform - ratchet and clank 2
action/platform - maximo
platform - jak and daxter, sly
fighter/beat'em up - urban reign, soul calibur 3 (prefer SC series over Tekken, VF)
Action games - Onimusha series, DMC, God of War
shooters - contra:ss or Metal Slug (2d), Rez, Gradius v

OK, since I've had literally dozens of titles on the PS2 since I got my first in 2001, I'll list some games that I've played(some may be multi platform, but are good enough to even justify the rebuy, even if you already have them on other systems). I'll also list some PS1 titles, since you can play PS1 games on the PS2(with a few exceptions). Anyway, here's MY LIST:

Multi Platform:
1. Red Dead Revolver-This game was originally going to be released by Capcom, but Rockstar bought the rights from them and released it. One of the best Western themed games I've played.
2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City- If you were growing up in the 80's and want alot of references to movies and tv shows from back then, plus a cast of 80's mega stars that made this game truly shine(Burt Reynolds, Gary Busey, Lee Majors, even Philip Michael Thomas from Miami Vice AND a lead character voiced by RAY LIOTTA of Goodfellas), then THIS is THE game to get.
3. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas- Just the sheer size of this game, the fact that you have THREE cities to goof around in, plus a flashback mission to Liberty City(I believe)makes this one of the most expansive 'sandbox' games out there.
4. Just Cause- This is another sandbox game, but with some real style thrown in. While you could parachute out of an airplane in San Andreas, this game allows you to use a grappling hook to turn that parachute into a parasail and cruise along behind a vehicle. You can do some pretty insane stunts in this game, like jumping from car to car WHILE they're moving. This is GTA on another level. This game touts a map that is I believe many times the size of the map from San Andreas. However, much of it is dense and impassable rain forest. Still, this game has a certain flair to it that the GTAs lack in some respect.

Exclusive PS2 Games(list continued):
5. War Of The Monsters- If you ever played any of the NEO GEO monster wrestling/fighting games back in the arcades in the late 80's, this is very much like those, except you can demolish buildings and use pieces of the fallen buildings to impale and otherwise pummel your opponents. Hard to find new anymore, but worth the money if you can find a copy used.

6. Way Of The Samurai- This game just wowed me when I first played it. You could pick up up to 2-3 weapons at a time from fallen opponents and you also had to make sure you kept your blades sharpened and kept up or they would break. I'm shocked no one mentioned this game yet on this list, since it was one of the better samurai games on PS2.

7. Zone Of The Enders- Mech game in space, that would be putting it in the most simplistic terms ever. But, there is more to this game than your average mecha game. It's a space shooter, in 3-D, with many other elements thrown in that just fit oh so well in this game.

PS1 games(list continued):

You will need to find a PS1 memory card for these games, since you can't save PS1 game saves to the PS2 memory card.

8. Syphon Filter- This game was touted at one time as the action version of Metal Gear Solid, but it's much more than that. You could use smoke grenades, gas grenades or just go through the game with both guns blazing. Definitely addictive, though the series has fallen off the track lately and become largely unplayable.

9. Treasures Of The Deep- A unique game which was largely panned by critics as horrible. You played as a treasure hunter, going into the worlds oceans to find and recover sunken treasures. The graphics may be dated nowadays, since it is 2 gens old, but this was the ONLY game of its type I can recall being on PS1. It is a true hidden gem of the PS1 era, no matter what the critics say.

10. Rising Zan- This game mixed gunplay with swordplay and set it in an old western setting. Think 'The Last Samurai' meets Outlaw Josey Wales with a twist. Another addictive but largely forgotten gem of the PS1 era.

I tried to make my list as diverse as possible, without including all of the RPGs like everyone else, though the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games for PS2(and Xbox) are among the better ones I've played.

Honorable mentions:

Multi:
Psychonauts

Exclusive:
Blood Will Tell(action RPG with a weird premise)

PS1:
Blasto
Intelligent Qube

God of War. Amazing.
God of War 2. Amazingness perfected.
Amplitude (or Frequency). The 2 reasons why Harmonix is where they are now.
Timesplitters 2 and/or Future Perfect. Do you love FPS? If so, apply within.
GTA III or VC, SA was too fucking big and the map system didn't help any.
Guitar Hero ONE. Two's song list is just...ugh.
Rayman 2: Revolution - Can't stress how overlooked this game is. SO good. For anyone who hasn't played the PS2 version (the definitive version) please pick it up!
THPS 4. The best TH game ever.
Champions of Norrath and CoN: Return to Arms. The best hack 'n slash games I've ever played. Grab 2 or 3 other friends, best local MP experience found on the PS2.

Honorable Mentions:
Katamari Damacy. Great game, but just too damn short.
Gitaroo Man. See above.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Fantastic hack 'n slash with great combo systems. Pretty challenging at parts too.
SSX: On Tour. Huge game. Just tons of stuff to do.
Red Faction. Geo-Mod goodness.
The first 2 Stars Jedi Starfighter games. Again, these get overlooked.

Oh, and if you like hurting yourself, Contra: Shattered Soldier is a good choice. Or Metal Slug. Either one, you'll want to hurt someone or something.
