Card game video games, dating sims, porn games, train simulators, pet raising, party games, complete original IP games, etc...

There's a ton of games that are far too obscure for most people to even get around to ranging from so many different genres and usually rooting from Japan (though, the USA has most of the obscure stuff on PC). Here we can talk about whatever stuff that's usually not popular or just doesn't fit in any genre really... Bring up any subject as I know I'm not the only person around who enjoys the very overly unique games.

to get the ball rolling:

I've lately been obsessed with wanting to find every Trading Card Game video game... so far I can't find anything out of what is already known, but am very curious as to what others may recommend.

also, anyone know when or if Aquazone is ever comming to US Xbox 360s? or is it non-region coded (see below if you have no idea what this game is)?

Does anyone else think that trading card videogames are the lamest fucking things out there? This is not a flame on you Rolento...I just think they're so fucking stupid.

I don't really get what they are?

I am stoked as all hell about the new SNK/Capcom Card Fighter's Clash coming out in January for the DS! If it's half as good as the Neo Geo Pocket game, it's well worth your cash.

I can definitly see how they can suck: if the actual card game sucks, then the game will suck. For bastards who like collecting stuff, or planning out stratagies, trading card video games make sense. but yeah, it's not for everyone.

anyone here play any hentai games (take me seriously here... thoguh I doubt anyone will). If anyone wants to play such a game with decent (I emphasize decent) pick up the games made by Illusion. Then again, none of it really makes sense.

tsukihime is a must play with the recent english patch. I hope someday they will have a patch for fate/stay night but the the script is as thick as a phonebook.

I think schmups like Castle Shikigami/Touhou where your hit point is signifcantly smaller than your sprite and you get bonuses for scratching the sprite:

I believe people are wanting to subgenre those into being either Manic Shooters or Curtain Fire/Bullet Hell shooters. Kinda splitting hairs though :p

NO WAY! I didnt know that was coming out for the DS. That game was AWESOME for the NGP. If you do like card collecting games or even if want dont, give this one a shot. I had this for the NGPC and LOVED it. Makes me want to dig it out again.

Yeah, some of those hentai plots are a bit insanely deep. They pretty much don't even need to be hentai at times.

If you like those, I highly recommend Every Extend Extra. It has a pinhole hitbox, and feels like a shmup while almost playing like a puzzle game.

Ahhh so you mean the Manga not the PS2 game? Frankly I'm just wondering if the new PS2 game coming will be fighting. If it is I will be quite excited as I can't wait to Noble Phantasm the shit out of all you motherfuckers.
Rolento I have Densha De Go! Shinkasen and I wish I had the controller for it. A word of warning, it's got Pop-Up like a motherfucker. It's just AWFUL for it.
In terms of trading card games, Quest Of D has a compelling one. It's a dungeon crawler, level up h&s but it's not in the U.S. I've got the Hard Inferno card and was told it's a rare one in the game and is a Level 3 Magic card which was and may still be the most powerful magic in the game.

I'm seriously considering possibly picking up Culdcept saga since it's an RPG with heavy emphasis on board game and card game play... though I may just pick up the PS2 version in order to educate myself.

I am referring to the original PC game. The PS2 Fate Stay Night is a port of the PC version with full voice acting (and none of the hentai stuff of course) The script of the game is about 3X longer than tsukihime and will probably take forever to translate.

Culdcept rules. If you haven't tried that game, I would give it a go before bashing these game types.

oh god you kick ass for posting that! Man do I miss that game. Did i ever get a sequal (even if not in america)? I do say that the soundtrack stands on its own for probably being the only very Japanese game with ska music.

The best trading card game (though I don't think it was ever a real trading card game but it plays like one) is Culdcept for the PS2. It's actually my favorite PS2 game overall. It's like Magic: The Gathering combined with Monopoly and it's incredibly fun.

Wow I didn't know it was based on a Hentai, I just watched the Fansub rips from Geneon. So is the PC version a fighting game or what and is it from Team Watanabe? Think Melty Blood and Cave Story.
edit: Rolento don't bother with the PS2 version. If the 360 version is almost exactly the same then you get the online play that SHOULD'VE been included in the US version from NEC.

they seem quite different, but possibly may have alot of the same cards (though the 360 one will have more).

here's really the only videos that go over the gameplay that I could find:

I have to buy the 360 version regardless just for the online. One of the best things is I'll see so many Japanese online since they LOVE this game.

that is true :) though, I've heard some of the Japanes playing Culdcept can be a bit obsessive.

Seconded - I don't even like these types of games usually and I was addicted to Culdcept for a few months.
I wonder what it's like to own a 360 in Japan. I bet you get called a rebel.
actually, DoAX2 and Blue Dragon are big pullers on the markt ATM, and Lost Odessy seems it will pull alot of people interested in Blue Dragon.

can someone explain Princess Maker 2 for me? is it a sim game?

also note: SNK is putting together some semi-hentai/perv games for the DS witch makes sense due to the touch screen.

Awesome, I keep hearing about how Blue Dragon will do well in Japan but I have no idea what it is.

baiscally, an RPG... but enough about that...

On a note of displeasure I find it bad that DoAX2 got bad rep. It really is a great game that at least Famitsu knew a bit better than the US press could. Most of the US scores are uncalled for and very un-valid.

Is it just me or do the girls in DOAX2 look shinier or more plastic than in the original? And I don't mean in a good way. Hopefully this is just from seeing screenshots from different sources and DOAX2 still looks at least as good as the first one.

it all depends on the lighting, but majority of the time the girls look absolutely fine. The only times they look like plastic are when it's high-noon and they are in direct sunlight. The game is probably the hardest things i've played in a long ass time, but it's damn good.

Good call on the topic rolento :)

I have to say, I'm very surprised they finished translating Tsukihime. I've considered picking it up, but you know, I'm a little scared....it being a hentai game and all. I just don't want to be reading "A CAT IS FINE TOO!" the moment someone walks in my room

AND HOLY fuckING SHIT!!! The translation for Melty Blood is FINISHED!

Man, I thought that was abandoned for sure! I wonder how long it'll take to image edit and insert the text

I guess that's for the fighting thread, but I think it fits here too-- MB has a very fleshed out story/adventure mode that is actually quite long.

yeah, in reality I think about a third of the reason why the US dosn't have as many Japanese obscure titles is due to translation, but with financial profits playing the largest role.

MB really has no excuse for not coming to america. Anime fanbases are a common thing now, and MB would stand as its own original US IP if it ever got a start officially in the US.

I'm still surprised even that the xbox mech sim game with the $200 controler (forgrot name) was released here. I'm still hoping for a smaller disconnection between local and worldwide markets, and I hope it starts in Japan.

on the note of a very american version of odd game marketing the BK games are a good start: http://www.bkgamer.com/
It kind of reminds me of all the japanese Disney Theme Park PS2 games...

...oh, and "A CAT IS FINE TOO!"

Screw the fact it's Anime and just recognize it's a good game. After all, the Japanese get a LOT of shitty Anime based games coming out there, to the point where the quality is the exception.

Well, what I meant to imply is that Anime is now considered a market of its own in the US, and MB has good right to be in the US due to the market being there.

Too bad there are too many idiot Anime fans here, not all but you know what I mean. Same idiots that tolerate no SAP on Adult Swim Anime on Cartoon Network which is why I don't watch it.

Princess Maker 2 is a life sim game with small action RPG portions mixed in

Pretty much, you go through a short cut scene about how you found your "Daughter" and give her a name, a birthday, and all that good stuff

She starts out age 10 very small

You pretty much have to raise her to 18, there's more than a hundred endings some very shocking and some very nasty and some very funny and some rather sweet

You have to manage her diet, health, exercise, education, work, free time, sleep, etc

You take vacations, make her work, go to school, she can go shopping, talk with village people, etc

There are side quests that can get you the more crazy endings, these take place in action RPG format, it's the only way to get a few rare items

There are cooking/dance/martial arts competitions yearly that get you money and good prizes

There IS a NUDE code, if you want to see the girl naked

And there's several "special" items that can affect her weight, height, build, and bust line

You can keep her short and petite, tall and broad, you CAN notice weight changes and health through the drawings

Her breasts can get VERY big or be complete invisible...that's not the main point of the game though

It's very complex, fun, and can take away all your time for a good week or two

And personally, I think the actual girl is so beautifully drawn, her expressions are very nice

All the animation/drawing is done by GAINAX, the game is produced by GAINAX as well [don't worry though, no hints of EVA in it at all]

How's the AI in it?

Also can you recommend a Life Sim. title like "N.U.D.E." except it feels like I'm actually teaching an AI how to be a human being or feels like it.

It seems like it has to get super huge before a game will be released here...or at least have a hype train following it.

naruto, DBZ, FMA, Bleach, Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh etc. I guess this avatar show is the latest.

Shingetsutan Tsukihime has a .000000000000000000000001 of even airing on a network. if it did air, it would get negative viewers somehow.

wow... princess maker sounds pretty nice! Can anyone post some info on that as well as N.U.D.E.? wasn't NUDE an xbox title at one point?

and yeah, you're probably right in saying Animes need to be uber popular before being taken seriously as a marketing plan.

Melty Blood will not be released in the US... it's a 2D fighter, it's not really that accessible, it's not part of an established franchise, there's lots of licensing issues, and it's different. Do you really think anyone here wants to play a new franchise? No. We don't.
Awesome, I keep hearing about how Blue Dragon will do well in Japan but I have no idea what it is.
An RPG that has designs from Akira Toryama (the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Quest guy... he's a dragon fetishist) that also got a 38/40 in Famitsu... so it turned out really well.

lol at the last part. yeah I guess everyone has valid points.

back to obscuritys: can anyone say they've played the GBC Pokemon Card Game? I know how the card game plays, but was wondering how the actual video game of the card game is.

as for one series I'm glad was a huge hit and was sorely needed in the US:

Don't bother. I hear "N.U.D.E." doesn't live up to the hype in terms of being a Life Sim. despite all the parties involved.
Holy fuck! Is it coming to the US?
Surprisingly, yes. Apparently, even Peter Moore understood that the 360 needed at least one RPG.

Disappointingly, Moore also said that there would be approx. 50 games coming out exclusively in Japan. Given the 360's region free-ness... or lack thereof... I might have to buy a Japanese 360 which will suck.
