I'm looking for a decent desktop PC

I'm looking for a new desktop computer and monitor for probably up to $1000 (I'm more concerned with value than price, though). It would be a family PC and used for some gaming too. Does anyone have any suggestions for this or know of good places to check?

True.

Especially if your willing to spend $1000.

Newegg.com is your friend or Tigerdirect.com

Thanks for the advice.

I'm pretty good with computers, but haven't done anything close to building one. Is it something that someone without too much experience can successfully do with some care and research? It seems like it would be fun to learn, but I want to be sure I don't screw it up and waste a bunch of money.

I did it on my own about a year ago with very little knowledge about it. The main part is just buying all the parts that will be compatible with each other. Besides that most of it is self explanatory with putting it together. I was gonna build another gaming rig about a month ago and with all components including a nice 20" monitor was just over $700 Plus tack on another $100 or so for a copy of Windows Vista unless you have the means to download a copy.

$1000 should get you a pretty nice computer. It's not too bad to learn, just stick to good brands and Newegg because of their return policy. A lot of it is just putting stuff in the right place and not being careless. Just follow the instructions and you should be good to go...if all else fails, RMA it back to Newegg. Yeah you gotta pay return shipping in most cases, but it's a small price to pay for everything you learn.

Here's my recommendations for parts off the top of my head:
CPU: Core 2 Duo 6750 (250? iono)
Mobo: Asus or Nvidia (depending if you overclock or what not) (70 - 200+)
HDD: 320GB 7200rpm drive (100)
GPU: XFX/BFG/EVGA 8800GT (250)
Assorted Burners, media readers, etc (50)
Case: Antec Nine Hundred or the sleeker Antec P180 or P182 (super silent) - 100ish, maybe less maybe more, depending on the deals
Sound card: probably unnecessary

A lot of those numbers are probably off but you get the idea. that's about $700 or 800 for a real solid computer that'll last a while. It would cost in the 1k area prebuilt, I'd figure.

Here is a great forum for first time PC builders. Techpowerup.com

Register there, link all your parts, and people will help you build your rig.

There's actually a really good $400/35% deal on Dell PCs that cost more than $1000, and people have actually been specing them out on other deal sites (not sure if I can provide links) so that they're costing about as much as building it yourself (including a monitor)
