I was looking into a digital camera, then I thought why not get a video camera? I'm going on vacation this summer (twice) and I'd like to have a camera for it.

I'm pretty much clueless about them. How much does a good one cost? I don't want a high end one but I don't want the bottom of the barrel, probably on towards the lower end though just to save money. I'd obviously like it to be small. I know nothing about miniDV/Hi 8/etc but I want to put the videos/pictures on my computer.

Any recommendations or info is greatly appreciated.

Edit: I've been thinking, I think a digital camera might suit my needs better. I'm just as clueless with them so help me out please!

I've seen some pretty nice ones for under $300, some even under $200. I don't think over that price this day and age is acceptable unless it's a professional series.

If you want to put them directly on the PC, you might want to look into one that uses either SD cards or Mini-DVDs that record directly to a true digital source. I don't quite understand the MiniDV format either, since it's essentially a cassette tape. Digital Tape = Oxymoron.

You can get analog ones (Hi8/VHS-C) for mid-$100 now, but you'll be buying something else if you don't already have a DVD-recorder of some sort with A/V inputs.

MiniDV actually gives you the best quality recording. Storage media doesn't affect the compression.

What is your budget?
What is more important to you - Video Quality or Convenience?
Do you want HiDef video?

Do you want HiDef video?[/quote] I was hoping for under $150, closer to $100. I'm not interested in HD quality or anything. I'd like small, but some I've seen seem too small for the hands.

Edit: Actually, the more I think about it, I don't really need a camcorder. I'd probably take more pictures than videos, plus digital cameras are cheaper. So I'm taking recommendations for both.

I'll sell you mine for $100. Comes with 512mb xd card and case.
