i know this is probably a lost cause but if anyone knows of any place that has it cheaper than an arm a leg and a soul lemme know. also is it better to get the upgrade edition or the full on? and i noticed they have versions with service packs included if you dont buy a version with the service pack on it already is this service pack downloadable from the microsoft website?

All service packs are downloadable

If you can upgrade, get the Upgrade version as it's cheaper

The best way to get it for cheap (legally) is to find a friend in a college. They usually have it for ~$10-15.

Dude, Windows Vista is coming out in a few months. If you actually want to pay for a Windows os, you might as well wait for their newest one.

But yeah, you can get those student discounts at college libraries, I think its like $75 though at my college.

Yeah, except Vista keeps getting delayed. And, why buy a brand new OS, and have to deal with non-compatible drivers/software for the next year or so? Just go with XP. And if you get XP Pro, I believe MS support will last until 2009 or so.
it's $5 per CD at UT and XP Pro is $30 at UT Dallas
Yeah, if your in college, its real cheap.

I'm sticking with XP most definitely for a year or two.

BTW, anyone know if you can sell these college OS discs? When I bought mine, I got both XP and XP 64bit edition- I have no use for the XP 64bit edition so why keep it?

Like previously stated, if you know someone attending a college, get it through them. Or, if you have hookups like I do (;)), you could try to get a copy through a Microsoft employee (they have access to this special Microsoft store, where all software is at slashed prices... even video games ;))

BTW, if you do find a good deal, feel free to let me know. I actually need an OS soon. I've been thinking of going with Windows Media Center, but am undecided. I know someone at a University, but best they can get is XP Pro UPGRADE for $79 ;(

So you got a XP 64 bit disc and Cd key that you haven't used?

do they sell them for cheap at all colleges? and if so can you order it online because i had no ideal until some of your posts they sold it at colleges. I do have one near me i could check but its been years since i was in college and everyone i know would have since graduated or moved on. is there a way to get your hands on one of these from UT and if so does it come with a cd key? all the online stores charge way too much for it so if anybody has a way to get some of those college copies to sell through here id be interested in buying one but if you can get them online that would be even better.

i finally located the UT store online and they have the xp pro and home editions at pretty decent prices compared to what you will see in other onlien stores like comp usa and the like but you need to have proof of being a teacher or student to get it at their lower price.

theyre selling the upgrade edition of xp pro at the university of tennessee and all of its other colleges for $80.11 cents including tax shipping and handling. buck i believe and theyre allowing students and faculty and staff the ability to purchase one copy of it for themselves. so if you knwo someone who works there or goes to school there you could get in on the deal.
